ACCREDITED AND STEM CERTIFIED COLLEGE PREP GIFTED SCHOOL
THE WEEK AHEAD | AUGUST 24-28, 2020
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Students and Parents,
I hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy! We miss you all so much, but understand that in order to keep our school and broader community healthy, there are new steps that need to be taken.
As part of our COVID-19 precautions, we have instructed all of our faculty and admin members to schedule their meetings with our parents and any outside people through zoom. There will not be any in person meetings on campus during the first semester to minimize the risks. We will revisit this decision for the second semester.
In addition to this, we are asking that parents please either send your student to school with lunch already in their possession or please order lunch through our lunch partner, ATL. Lunch Co.(You can see more info on ATL Lunch Co. below). Please know that Uber Eats, Door Dash or any other food delivery service will not be accepted. Parents should also NOT bring items or food for their student into the building during the school day. Students should arrive at school with all items / food needed for the school day.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support on these important safety precautions.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! I hope that everyone has had a wonderful second week of school and I am looking forward to welcoming our Pre-K and Kindergarten students who will be beginning on campus learning! Hopefully we will all be reunited soon! Until then, we are all only an email away!
Have a great weekend!
Here are some helpful information and reminders:
SCHOOL REOPENING - PHASING IN PLAN
- Week 3 (Aug. 24-28) - PreK and Kindergarten on campus with the hybrid model
- Week 4 (Aug. 31-Sep.4) - PreK thru 3rd grade on Campus with the hybrid model
- Week 5 (after Labor Day) - To be determined! Our intention is to add remaining grades to the hybrid model after the Labor Holiday.
REPORTING ABSENCES
When your student will be absent from school for the entire day, or if you have questions about your student's attendance, please send an e-mail to attendance@fultonscienceacademy.org
Please always keep in mind that when emailing Attendance, include the date in which you have questions about and include your student's name. (Please make sure you use their full name, no shortened versions or nick names)
Please refer to the student handbook for the full attendance policy.
AFTER SCHOOL CARE
We would like to openly tell you that when more students stay for after school care, it will be harder for us to protect the safety of after school care students during this pandemic. Therefore, we strongly ask you to pick up your elementary school students between 3:16 and 3:40 and middle and high school students before 4:10 pm.
- For elementary students, after school care begins at 3:40 pm and continues till 5:30.
- For middle and high students, after school care begins at 4:10 pm and continues till 5:30. Elementary students with siblings in middle and/or high school will be charged after 4:10.
For those students who regularly use after school care, we recommend the monthly payment plan to save money. After school care fee is $20 per day for the monthly payment plan. If not interested in a monthly registration, you will indicate this on the form below. You will be charged $30 per day as you use after school care. After 5:30, the fee increases to $40, and $1 is added for each minute after 6:00. If a student is not taken by 7 pm, we will inform the local safety authorities for the safety of the student.
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES
Please CLICK HERE to locate medication and medical health condition forms for those students that will be face-to-face in school. These forms, along with their medication if needed, can be dropped off in the nurse's office. Please put everything in a large Ziploc bag with your child’s name on the medication and on outside of the bag.
NEW SCHOOL YEAR OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE
I would like to remind you that we have installed and tested the Zoom Room Concept with large TVs in each classroom as part of our hybrid model approach, and it is working great. The advantage of this new technological setup is that it allows smooth and effective interaction among faculty members, students who choose to come to school, and students who chose to stay at home.
Please be informed that we now require all students and faculty members to wear masks at the school.
At this time, our plan includes the following sections:
- Facility Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Enhancements
- Operational Adjustments
- Clinic Procedures for COVID 19
- Hybrid Model Instruction
- Attendance
- Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
- Clubs & Academic Teams
- Athletics
- COVID-19 Warning for Students and Parents
For further details about these sections, please visit our newly created COVID-19 Response page on our school website.

Tips for Face Masks
Start practicing with your child at home by having them wear their mask. You can slowly add time each day to help them prepare to have it on all day when he/she returns to campus.
Make sure to choose a mask that is comfortable for your child. The mask should cover the mouth and nose with no gaps on the sides and without having to constantly adjust the mask.
Practice taking it off by pulling the earpieces and not the front of the mask. You should try to minimize touching the front of the mask.
Label the mask with the student’s name (Lands’ End masks have a tab inside for name).
Discuss with your child that they should not share or trade masks with other students.
Wash your cloth masks frequently.
Attaching a lanyard to the mask is a great idea to prevent losing it during the day or having it fall off in unmentionable places.

Mustang News is accepting various applications for 2020-2021 | deadline extended to august 21
Due to school going online for the time being, MNT will extend the deadline for new member applications on a rolling basis. This will allow rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders to apply for positions of show editors and reporters. Rising 10th graders if you are interested in being an anchor complete the form for anchors. Also please submit your audition video for all positions you are interested in. This is important since we are not able to do in person studio auditions. Questions ? Please email fsanews@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Calling all 9th and 10th graders.., interested in joining the award winning Mustang News Team? Then complete the application via the link https://forms.gle/Jzgicn54HJTtdpR46 Please read carefully as you also have to submit a short video with your application.
The process takes place in various steps.
- Submit your completed application with a short video
- Your teacher recommendations will need to be verified
- Current team members will review applications
- If you made the cut you will be invited to do an interview with current team members.
- Following the interview you will be notified if you made the team.
Not sure what MNT is about ?
It’s a production run by high school students working before and after school. They generally work a day in advance to get the show ready. Being a team member means you will be held accountable, must be able to honor deadlines, great at talking/communicating with others as well as “step up” when needed.
At the moment MNT is looking for reporters and video editors. You will also get the chance to learn other roles in the production as you go along.
Rising 10th graders and current MNT members - it’s audition time for News Anchors.
If you are interested please complete the following application and send in an audition video of no more than 30 secs of you presenting a news story. https://forms.gle/xU5B7auSKAWB72E16 Normally, auditions would be held in studio, but the team would like to get ahead of schedule and have plenty of planning time.
Feel free to use content from the school newsletter for your story. You will be evaluated overall on camera presence, articulation, and clarity of your delivery. Current MNT members interested in anchoring should also send in an audition video and completed application. Please note that anchors tend to take on other roles as well on the team when needed, such as camera, editing, reporting and producing.
More Information about MNT
- It is a team of high schoolers and we will be starting off virtually,(until we get studio space) we have a zoom meeting secluded for the current team this coming Wednesday.
- We will talk about roles, production meeting times, and how to handle new team members, training and assignments
- Applications have been out in the newsletter over the summer but to date no responses yet (not sure if it is because they had to submit a video or was waiting for class schedules etc.) I may just change that to just having an interview via zoom with team members for those interested.
- Anchor spots have been opened up to 10th grade but may also open to 9th depending on what the group decides on Wednesday.
- The show is also recorded ahead, which means prep needs to be completed at least two days before (scripts).
- This is a group that meets/work independently either before (to be decided by group) school starts and after, there is no set time except for recordings but there are time deadlines for each member to turn in their "piece" of the production.
- There is a dedicated google drive that all team members have access to and that's where scripts, graphics, editing and shows are shared
- Ms. Melton does the upload and posting so there is a deadline to do that as well.
- The show is edited on Final Cut Pro, and while during cyber I do quite a bit of the writing and pre editing of stories to make our show deadlines and help them out amidst the chaos, team reporters and editors will have to "own" these tasks a bit more going forward.
- The roles on the team follows that of a news/show production such as anchor, producer, technical director etc.
Benefits to being n MNT
- Great for your resume
- Practice and finetune voice and visual presentation and delivery skills
- Be effective and learn adjustments on a highly collaborative team
- Explore a different style of writing and creating videos (add to your skill set - script writing or writing for tv/video, edit news type video, production recording, setting up a recording environment etc.)
- Adds balance to your college application/resume
- Notoriety at FSA and by others in the FSA community ..."smile you are on camera or in the credits"
Competitions and National Recognition
- MNT is a member of the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) -Broadcast section
- Eligible for the National Scholastic Press Association Honor roll (National recognition and honor cords for graduation) once you serve four consecutive semesters on the production.
- Various story and show competitions to enter as a team or individual
