Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

It's been a great February and I've enjoyed watching Hallinan embrace our character trait KINDNESS this month!

Librarian Nicolle Landau is very conscientious about reading books to our students that reinforce the character trait we are practicing. I'd like to highlight some of the beautiful books centered around kindness she read this month: Kindness Grows by Britta Teckentrup, Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Julie Vivas, A Little Spot by Diane Alber, Somebody Loves you Mr Hatch by Eileen Spinelli and The Kindness Quilt by Nancy Wallace. Mrs Landau encouraged students to make squares to add to the Hallinan Kindness Quilt which you can see below.

Tomorrow is our last day of Kindness Spirit Week - remind your children to wear Hallinan spirit wear! And, if you are looking for some new spirit wear, make sure to check out the spirit wear order form in the PTO section below. Orders are due March 4.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found pile is growing! Lost and Found is located in the vestibule so parents and students may both easily access it. Please encourage your child to look for missing items by the end of the day, Monday, February 28, when everything will be donated.

Paper Bridges in Mrs Burdick's 3rd Grade Class

Students learned about real-life bridge design this week. In this activity, students used their knowledge of forces to build a paper bridge strong enough to support as many large and small washers as possible, using only paper to create the bridges.

Abstract Art in Ms Lunde's Class 2nd Grade Class

Ms Lunde's class studied Alma Thomas, an important role model for women and African Americans. Ms Thomas said, "The use of color in my paintings is of paramount importance to me. Through color I have sought to concentrate on beauty and happiness, rather than on man's inhumanity to man."

LO Schools Foundation Board Member

The Lake Oswego Schools Foundation is currently looking for new board members and would love to have a representative from Hallinan. If you're interested or have questions, please reach out to Whitney Woolf at woolfw@loswego.k12.or.us.

Help Wanted

Are you looking for opportunities to be more involved in the happenings at Hallinan? Maybe you'd like to meet more fellow parents or interact more directly with the teachers and staff? You're in luck! We're currently recruiting board members for next year - no experience required! If you're interested, reach out to Erin at hallinanpresident@gmail.com.

2022-23 Registration

Registration for the 2022-23 school year (all grade levels) is open! This is for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and for returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. Registration is online through ParentVUE. Parents do not need to register students for 2022-23 who are currently attending during the 2021- 22 school year. Information about registration, including Spanish Immersion, can be found here.

Families of students who will be entering kindergarten in the fall of 2022 can find information about Kindergarten, including how to register, on the Hallinan Kinder Counts pre-recorded video on the Hallinan website.

YouthTruth Surveys

As part of LOSD’s efforts to create a culture of belonging and to achieve equitable academic outcomes, we will once again administer the Youth Truth survey to all staff, parents, and students in grades 3-12. The Family Survey link is ytsurvey.org/losdfamily22, and it will be accessible beginning Monday, February 28. The YouthTruth survey is confidential, and responses from children and parents will be held in the strictest confidence. We encourage everyone to participate. This will be an important piece of information for administrators to improve our students' experiences at school.

Elementary students in grades 3-5 will also complete the survey between February 28 and March 25. This is a vital opportunity for students to provide feedback and help guide the school’s improvement plan. The survey will take 15-30 minutes to complete and will be offered during school hours.

*Please note that parents may opt their child out of the survey if they would like. Click here for the opt-out form.

Upcoming Health Lessons

In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools.

SB 856 mandates that all Oregon Public Schools provide:

  • A minimum of 4 instructional sessions (equal to or greater than a standard class period) of sex abuse prevention instruction per year for grades kindergarten through 12
  • Sexual abuse instruction that is integrated and part of required district comprehensive sexuality education plan and is aligned with state standards
  • Instruction that is age appropriate, medically accurate, and is not shame or fear based
  • Instruction that is culturally inclusive and is responsive to diverse students including race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation
  • A parental involvement component to inform parents about child sexual abuse topics
  • A professional training component for administrators, teachers and other school personnel

Our teachers use the adopted Health Curriculum, The Great Body Shop, to teach the required Oregon Health Standards to our students. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is a comprehensive health education curriculum which is sequential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and medically accurate. The lessons align with Oregon’s Health Education Standards and are embedded with social-emotional learning. Watch your classroom teacher's newsletter for upcoming topics. If you would like to review the health curriculum, please contact the school office. More information, including an opt-out form if needed, can be found on the District website.
