Gravely Connection
June 2019
Seadog families,
The 2018-2019 School year was focused around “One Seadog Family.” The Seadog Family House system was implemented to promote collaboration across the school and to help students take ownership in creating and demonstrating a CULTURE of Community and Responsibility. Daily our students worked towards demonstrating MATES Traits with the goal of achieving 120,000 MATES Traits being recognized this year. Our students accomplished this by being Motivated, Appropriate, Trustworthy, Empathetic, and Safe throughout the year, and even created our schools MATES Chant. We celebrated our houses each quarter with schoolwide assemblies filled with games and competitions, and honored the Legacy of Samuel L. Gravely Jr.
Throughout the year we have deepened our implementation of Project Based Learning with multiple great learning experiences including projects such as an Amazing Race, students as Curators of a Museum, Travel Agents, Market Day, Native Americans Artifacts, Planning Field Trips, Animals and Habitats, Economics, Job Fair, Creating a Student Newspaper and more. We look forward to continuing to build upon these engaging learning opportunities.
Our continued success is the result of our amazing teachers and staff, engaged students, and supportive school community. Our PTO supported through many events such as Pi/STEAM Night, 80’s Dance and Silent Auction, delivered many events to bring our community together, and raised funds to support projects throughout the building. Our students continue to impress each day with their motivation, perseverance, and continued growth both academically and socially. We are fortunate and grateful to have a world class staff. It is through their daily efforts, sacrifice, and determination that we have created the amazing culture and climate for our school community to prosper.
What we are most proud of is the kindness, empathy, and caring of our students, teachers and community. Thank you for playing your part in making Gravely an amazing place for teaching and learning.
Samuel. L. Gravely Jr.’s vision: Success = Education + Motivation + Perseverance.
Thank you for your continued support of our Seadog Family!

Fourth grade completed their electricity unit by completing a hands on project and making their own quiz boards. To introduce the project, we asked the students how they could create an electronic game to help the 3rd graders prepare for their upcoming math SOL? We explained how the quiz board worked and the materials they would have to construct it. Through science lessons, students were able to explore using wires, batteries, and various materials. When the time came to build their quiz boards, students were given file folders, a bulb, brass pins, tin foil and electrical tape. The students had to use their knowledge about conductors and insulators in order to properly make single circuits on their quiz board. Each 4th grade class partnered up with a 3rd grade class. The 3rd graders were able to practice their math skills to help prepare them for the SOL! It was fantastic for students to be able to work together across grade levels.
Fourth grade reminders: Our 4th grade picnic is Thursday June 6 from 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM. We hope to see many of our parents there to celebrate the end of the year! Friday June 7 we have our Family and Life Education lesson. Please contact your child's teacher if you would like to preview the video or would like to opt your child out of this.

Helping Your Child Identify Interests and Explore Careers
Research shows that parents have the greatest influence on their child’s career choices. Here are some ways to help your child begin the career development process:
· Share your “career story” with your child. Explain how your interests, abilities, values, and decisions have shaped your experiences in the world of work.
· Ask your child about his/her favorite job. Help him/her connect his/her personal interests and abilities to future careers that could be a good fit.
· Give your child an opportunity to visit workers or places of employment that are of interest to him/her.
· Check out books on careers from the library. · Visit the Virginia Career VIEW website at www.vacareerview.org to take an online interest inventory and play career games with your child.

In the Classroom
Students have been working hard to create a variety of art pieces including weaving, team paintings, stitching, and collage projects. I would like to encourage you to check the Gravely art website weekly to see what each grade level is working on and to find any art announcements. I have also created an Instagram page where I will also post pictures of the art we are creating. Here is the link to the Instagram page. https://www.instagram.com/missbonner_art/
