Thank you for the New K Playground at Chapman Elementary
A ribbon-cutting event was held on Monday, November 14 celebrating the installation of a new playground at Chapman Elementary School. Spectators were treated to a demonstration of the equipment by a group of experts — kindergartners. The ceremony was the culmination of a two-year fundraising effort by the school and the Love Chapmantown Community Coalition to raise $41,000 to build the playground, which is designed to serve transitional kindergarten and kindergarten children. “Until now, our kindergartners were playing on aging, oversized equipment that was installed when the school opened in 1953,” said Laura Manning, a Chapman teacher involved with the project, in a press release. The campaign raised enough funds to purchase picnic tables and several tricycles, in addition to swings, slides and other equipment, according to the release.
Many thanks to all involved with funding and building the new K playground at Chapman Elementary including:

PVHS ACE-LIFE Academy News
The Pleasant Valley High School ACE-LIFE Academy (Accelerated Career/College Education/ Learning Is For Everyone) is an Academy with an academic and career focus on occupations related to education, child development and human services. We provide personalized, hands-on applied instruction and work-based learning. This small learning community is lead by dedicated teachers and committed community members. At each grade level students participate in a rigorous college prep curriculum and have exciting opportunities to engage in a variety of off-campus opportunities. Through the academy students gain life and career building skills while earning college credit. The Careers with Kids and the Human Development classes are 2 x 2 x 2 classes articulating with Butte College and extending to CSUC: 3 units per class. Students are members of FCCLA.
This is a busy time for the ACE-LIFE Academy, and we want to share what we’ve been up to.
- The seniors took the CAPS, COPS, COPES Career Assessments, tools to help them begin thinking about their future careers.
- The juniors took the Myers Brigg Personality Type Indicator, Career Cruising and California Career Zone.
- The students are working on their career/academic portfolios with assignments on resume, job application, career assessment, career research, formal thank you letters and interview skills.
- The juniors and seniors visited the Odyssey Ropes Course in Paradise on September 15th and October 5th. The students spent the day challenging themselves and supporting their classmates as they climbed high wobbly poles and walked along wires three stories above the ground. This fieldtrip highlighted the necessity for commitment and teamwork in human service occupations.
- On October 14th, students attended Butte College Career Day. Students had the opportunity to learn about careers in the fields of Education, Child Development, Emergency Services, Medical, etc.
- On Tuesday, November 8th students participated in our annual Veterans Awareness Day Program designed to honor and thank those who have served in our military. This year we filled the Center for the Arts facility, and were privileged to have retired Bidwell Jr. High teacher, Colonel Mike Higginson and PV teacher, Captain Bill Flory share their military experiences and emphasis the importance of supporting our veterans. The HERO classes led by Mrs. Morrissey tied over 200 yellow ribbons on the trees on the PV campus to signify our support for our veterans.
- Students designed posters to be used at the Marigold Red Ribbon Rally. Over 60 academy students visited Marigold during the rally to show support for the “Jr. Vikes” and to promote being positive role models and drug free.
- The juniors will attend a fieldtrip to the Police and Fire Academies on the Butte College Campus in March. The students will experience the rigor, challenges, and rewards of attending the Academies.
- All HERO (Human Service and Emergency Related Occupations) students have been TB tested, HIPAA trained and CPR and First Aid certified and AED certified. All Careers with Kids and Human Development students are CPR/First Aid certified.
- The juniors and seniors have had guest speakers visit from Smart Start Preschool, Innovative Preschool, Chico Fire Department, and Cal-Fire to talk about career opportunities in their chosen professions.
- Our junior and senior Careers with Kids students continue to work with teachers in classrooms at Marigold Elementary, Loma Vista, PVHS, Innovative Preschool, and Smart Start Preschool
- Our HERO students have completed their first rotation. Our students worked with Chico Police Department, Chico Fire Departments, Enloe Hospital, Valley Oak Veterinary, Kids IN Motion, Pleasant Valley High School, CSU, Chico, Oakmont and Smart Start Preschool. Our second rotation begins in January.
- ACE-LIFE academy and FCCLA students have organized a chapter for the student organization, Teens in the Driver Seat. This national organization teaches the dangers of distracted driving and drinking and driving.
- Up-coming field trips; Butte College, Chico State, Gateway Science Museum.
Please contact us at ldietle@chicousd.org if you have any questions about, or ideas for, our academy. We are always looking for new ways to enrich our programs.

Music is in the Air....
Music Teachers Tanner Johns and Ryan Heimlich combined their students from PVHS, BJHS, and MJHS to create a 140 person marching band at the last regular season home football game at PVHS. They rehearsed only once, and then put on a show. Next year they want to make it even bigger and better! All of the kids – high school and junior high – had a great time!

Student Chess League
A wonderful opportunity is available to the students of the CUSD. The Sacramento Valley Scholastic Chess League (SVSCL) is an organization dedicated to providing students grades K-12 with the opportunity to come together to play competitive chess. The league is sanctioned by the United States Chess Federation (USCF). The SVSCL is currently the 9th largest scholastic chess league in the nation! They host league tournaments once a month at schools throughout the northern Sacramento valley. Membership is $35 a year. If your child’s school does not host a team, students can still join the league and compete as individuals. For more information, contact Steven Oberlander at soberlan@chicousd.org or visit the league website at www.svscl.org. They would love to hear from you!
Emma Wilson Elementary School, Red Ribbon Week

Our Parents
Parent Letter to Loma Vista Teacher
My son is in Mrs. Liz Harman's afternoon class. I am writing this letter to express how impressed I am by Mrs. Liz, as well as give my sincerest gratitude for all she does as a teacher for my son.
Since the first day of school this year, Mrs. Liz has made me feel full of hope for this school year, and she has dispelled a lot of the fears I had for my son's education. As you may know, in the past, Benji has had a problem disrobing in class. This behavior has caused me a lot of anxiety and has affected his full participation in the classroom. Mrs. Liz immediately approached this problem with a positive, problem-solving attitude, and she reassured me that this behavior would eventually pass. Mrs. Liz then went so far as to purchase an entire wardrobe of overalls to help overcome this behavior, and it has worked!
I am so thankful that Mrs. Liz is my son's teacher, and I appreciate how far she is willing to go to ensure that he is in a positive frame of mind when he is in her classroom so that he is ready to learn. I offered to reimburse her the cost for the overalls, but she told me that she would do this for any child in her classroom if it will help them be ready to learn and facilitate their learning process.
Thank you for having such a kind, caring, and positive teacher at your school. My son as well as all of her classroom children, are fortunate to have her for their teacher.
Sincerely,
Parent Letter regarding Field Hockey
Wow, I knew Bill Flory was a great guy (my husband went to PV with him YEARS ago!) but tonight at the banquet I was overwhelmed by his caring attitude toward his players and parents, his emotion and sincerity, his dedication to PVHS and Viking Pride, and his overall leadership qualities. My daughter (JV player) left saying, "I can't wait for coach Flory to be my coach. (We love coach Volk too!) I don't think Bill realizes what a positive effect he had on every person, young and old, in that room tonight. Can you anonymously let him know that I really appreciate the "humanness" he showed all of us and I will carry it with me for days to come. I'm so happy to be a part of the Viking Family.
