Hammerschmidt's Happenings
May 11th- 15th
Dear WHS Staff,
Please know how very appreciated you all are. Many, many moments over the past several weeks were an obvious reminder of how truly incredible you all are. Thank you for all that you have done to support our students and families.
School personnel have never been stretched in such a profound way. Through it all, you have demonstrated creativity, adaptability, perseverance, imagination, and tremendous work ethic.
I couldn't be prouder of the Hammerschmidt Staff! Thank You!
As a small token of my appreciation, I will be sponsoring treats and refreshments when we gather for our "Reverse" Parade. More details will be shared in the weeks to come.

Tips for Other Teachers During Remote Learning
Keep the learning engaging and fun. ALL families are struggling in one way or another. If the students and families enjoy the learning, they are more encouraged to keep going!
Mute All
Always check your background before getting on a google meets call with your class!
Take a deep breath and give yourself some grace!
Keep
YOUR
Perspective
REAL even when others don’t!
Don’t try to do everything you do in your regular school day. Pick one or 2 things outside of reading and math that your kids love and do that.
Ways to Disinfect Hands WITHOUT Hand Sanitizer
Pee on your hands….after all it helps when you get stung by a jellyfish AND baseball players do it :)
Social Distancing "Haiku"
Even when apart,
Show kindness to everyone
We are united.
Staying home gets old
Going for walks is now fun
Six feet from our friends
Stay six feet apart
Always wear a mask shopping
Miss hugging you all!
Stay six feet from me
Sending all hugs through the air
Distance shows you care
Just six feet away
Will keep the virus at bay.
Please just cancel May.
Through the screen I watch
Students show me their nostrils
I laugh til I cry
Teaching and Learning
Distance doesn’t matter when
There’s Kindness and LOVE!
We are very scared
We miss our friends very much
We love everyone
Can't go to the store
Teenagers eat way too much
Mac and cheese again
Advice for Administration for the Upcoming Year:
Mute All
Please build in to teachers’ schedules time for potty breaks - we have all gotten used to going when we need to go! Our bladder’s will not be as well trained :)
Provide see-through cubicles for every student and staff member
WHS needs a wine/beer cart to come down the hallway at 4pm every day!
Keep
Calm
&
Communicate
On
Keep believing in us!
Individual Team Score Sheets:
Great job everyone! On to week 2. This is still anyone's game. All teams can make up ground or plummet downward! Good luck!
Kim Lynch- Kdg. Teacher
If you were to write a book about yourself, what would you name it?
I married a Chip Gaines- How to survive home renovations!
Favorite Memory of a recent school experience:
I don’t have just one favorite memory. I enjoy our staff parties, family nights, talent show, and basically any time our WHS community comes together!
Fondest Memory of your own elementary experience:
My mom worked as the secretary at my elementary school, so I would wait an hour longer after school until she got off work. During that time, my 4th grade teacher would let me hang out in her classroom. I would borrow her teacher manuals and teach a lesson to my imaginary students and write on her chalkboard. It was usually a lesson that my teacher taught us that day. I specifically remember teaching a social studies lesson about sharecroppers during the Civil War. To this day, the Civil War is one of my favorite times.
Words That Describe Me:
thoughtful, patient, caring
Bucket List:
I would love to go to Washington D.C. because I love history!
What is your hidden talent?
I can french braid hair and do other styles from the late 90s-early 2000s. I used to do hair for all of my friends.
What advice would you give to someone just starting off their career in education?
Things will not always go as planned and that is ok. As teachers we can often be our hardest critic. Also, remember that you are making an impact in the lives of your students more than you may realize.
What is the last joke that you recall:
Why did the student eat his homework? Because the teacher said it was a piece of cake!
Best Concert Experience:
Bruce Springsteen at Wrigley Field- he played for 3 ½ hours straight, way past the music curfew time!
Staff Shout Outs!
Kelly Summers and Neil Gunsteen
They both gave me some great ideas for a student who was really missing Science. Kelly even offered to have him join her google hangout even though he isn't in her class :) You two are the best!!
