DRL Practice Day - Friday, November 20
Dear Spartanburg Two Elementary Families,
Aligned to the AccelerateED Task Force: Guidance and Recommendations for the 2020–21 School Year from the South Carolina Department of Education, Spartanburg School District Two has scheduled three (3) practice Distance Remote Learning (DRL) days for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. These three (3) practice days are designed to prepare students to transition to a full Distance Remote Learning (DRL) Model should this change become necessary. The practice days are scheduled for:
- Friday, November 20, 2020
- Friday, January 15, 2021
- Friday, March 19, 2021
The Distance Remote Learning Model is very different from DRL implemented during the emergency school closure last spring. Much of the summer was spent with D2 educators and instructional leaders studying and preparing flexible learning plans for all grade levels. D2 teachers and instructional coaches have continued to plan for instruction using the flexible learning plans to prepare for both face-to-face and DRL models. The plans are differentiated to meet the needs of various levels for proficiency, and are designed to engage students with learning. The plans are aligned to state standards and are challenging, yet grade-level appropriate.
During these practice days, students will be expected to complete the teacher’s assignments. The assignments for the practice DRL days will not require technology; thus, devices will not be taken home during the practice days. The assignments may be related to Flexible Learning Plans or can be teacher created.
The assignments during DRL are required and will be a portion of the nine weeks grade for students. Should your child have questions about the assignments, teachers will respond to Seesaw messages and emails throughout the day. Teachers will be involved in training during the DRL practice days; therefore, some responses may be delayed. Please see the excerpt below from the Spartanburg Two District Two DRL Handbook:
Distance Remote Learning is a model of instruction to be utilized when the students are not in-person. With the possibility of starting school in this model or navigating in and out of this model due to health concerns, Distance Remote Learning (DRL) will be viewed through a different lens, as we now have more time and knowledge to refine our instruction and communication. With a better understanding of DRL in place and increased accountability, district leaders, administrators, teachers, instructional coaches, and interventionists have collaborated to provide clarity as we prepare to reach all of our students when implementing the DRL Model.
Key Factors in the Spartanburg Two DRL Model :
- Ease of use and accessibility for students, parents, and teachers
- Clear and consistent use of tools and communication for students and parents
- Accountability of student learning and participation
- A variety of opportunities for student engagement and instruction
- Differentiation for student and family needs
Thank you for your support as we work to better meet the needs of our learners. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s school.

Safety is #1 Priority at SCES - Everyone Plays a Part!
As we enter this “new normal” for the 2020-2021 school year, there are a few things that will change in regards to policies and procedures found within this handbook. All changes are to ensure the health and safety of our students and faculty as well as our families. Since the pandemic is a fluid situation, our policies and procedures are subject to change based on the latest guidance from DHEC, CDC, SCDE, as well as District Two. We have added this addendum to inform you of policy changes to our normal routines and procedures. As always, thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we strive to best serve you and your children.
If someone in your home or someone you know exhibits symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19, please contact your child’s teacher, the school nurse, or an administrator as quickly as possible. Do NOT send your child to school or visit the school office when sick.
Our front office will be closed to outside visitors. Someone will meet you at the door, if you have a need to visit the school.
No visitors will be allowed into the instructional side of the building. This means parents and guardians cannot walk students to their classrooms, visit a classroom, or eat lunch with their child. When necessary, visitors can come into the front office following our new policies and procedures, which includes answering COVID related questions, wearing a face covering, using hand sanitizer, and maintaining social distancing.
