"We exist so children can excel."

What We're Learning in 6th Grade Language Arts

Response to Intervention

Here at Mount Carmel Schools we are committed to tailoring your child's instruction to best meet his or her needs. As a result, we have made a concerted effort to group your child in such a way that we can differentiate our instruction to allow our students be successful in their learning. When you hear your child talk about RtI, or Response to Intervention, that's what (s)he's talking about. At this point, many teachers are focusing on strategies for being successful during the upcoming ISTEP test.

Simple 6 Writing

As we continue to hone our craft, we will be moving on to an argumentative style of writing. We will be working toward addressing the following standards:

"Write arguments in a variety of forms that –

● Introduce claim(s), using strategies such as textual analysis, comparison/contrast and cause/effect.

● Use an organizational structure to group related ideas that support the argument.

● Support claim(s) with clear reasons and relevant evidence, using credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.

● Establish and maintain a consistent style and tone appropriate to purpose and audience.

● Use appropriate transitions that enhance the progression of the text and clarify the relationships among claim(s) and reasons.

● Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from the argument presented."
