No Place Like Jones
Family Updates for the Week of May 1, 2023
May 5 is Cinco De Mayo!
Principal Corner
Can you believe May is already here? We have 29 days of school left!
Did someone say Jones Jam dance-a-thon?! With our families' help, community sponsors, and donors, our FTO exceeded its fundraising goal by raising over $13,000! Thank you to everyone who donated and helped to make this event successful. Our students had a fantastic time dancing and enjoyed the Global Dance Celebration at the end of the day. The celebration included breakdancers, a hip hop historian, drum and dance from West Africa (LEAF Global Arts), and Indigenous Aztez tradition from the Latinx dance group Danza Azteca Chichimeca.
You still have until Monday at midnight to vote. Use this link: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/ibjdance.
Visit our social media to see some fun pictures.
I invite you to visit our school's website and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/irabjones/ and follow us on Twitter @Principal_IBJ and Instagram @IraB.JonesElementary. These will serve as a resource tool for all upcoming events, the student/family handbook, and important reminders, and you can catch up with all the wonderful things our students and teachers are doing.
As a school leader and a parent, I understand the necessity of healthy communication between families and the school. I welcome your questions, celebrations, or concerns at any time. You can reach me by calling the school at 828.350.6700 or emailing me at ruafika.cobb@acsgmail.net.

Notes from the Counseling Corner with Ms. Courtney, School Counselor
Personality: We Need All Types
How you describe your student matters, and how you honor that description matters even more. One component of personality can be described as extroverted, introverted, or ambiverted. In order to determine which descriptor best fits your student, think about how they like to spend their time, how they recharge, and how they like to connect with others.
An introverted person often shows you that they:
Enjoy spending time alone
Cherish quality, intimate time with a few people
Need space to themselves after being in the presence of others
Want time to think about what they experience and what their responses to those experiences will be
An extroverted person may show you that they:
Prefer spending time with others like large crowds and new situations
Need to be around others in order to feel recharged
Tend to be more talkative
An ambivert person displays personality characteristics that are a balance of introvert and extrovert features.
In the book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, Susan Cain notes that one in three people are introverted, yet society drastically undervalues their qualities and dismisses them as being shy. While there are indeed some shy introverts, there are also some calm introverts. The author suggests that we use the word shy cautiously as it does not fit all introverts and can be limiting. Students with strong introverted tendencies have many admirable qualities, such as being good listeners, self-sufficient, super focused, well-prepared, independent, calm, eloquent, creative, and self-aware.
Take time to understand how your student likes to spend their time and how they are recharged. Notice the personality traits that are valued in your family and friend circle. When this component of your student’s personality is honored, their sense of worth, esteem, and aptitude will flourish, and their specific talents, energy, and happiness will be boundless.
