A NOTE FROM DR HITCHMAN...
Welcome to the first week of May and what a difference a month makes. Last month at this time we were discussing the opportunity for students to possibly participate in 4 days of hybrid in-person learning and now we are averaging approximately 275 students in the building Tuesday-Friday. I appreciate your patience and cooperation as we expanded hybrid in-person learning and continue to meet the needs of our over 650 students who participate in distance learning. Our teachers and staff have done an amazing job including both groups of students in activities and labs. The first week in May is designated Teacher Appreciation Week and I do not have the words to fully express how much I appreciate all our teachers have accomplished during this unusual and unpredictable school year. In my opinion, May should be teacher appreciation month. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teachers and let them know how much you appreciate what they do on a daily basis to meet the needs of our students.
There are four full weeks of school during the month of May. In addition to the spring sports season, May is also the month when students take the SOL or AP exams. If you have any questions regarding the spring testing schedule, please do not hesitate to reach out to our school testing coordinator, Ms. Donna Draisey. Additionally, May is when we reach out to students who may be recommended for summer extension and credit recovery. We understand some of our students have experienced learning loss during the past year and may need additional support to pass credit bearing courses. The 4th marking period is also the last marking period for students to impact their final grades. If your child needs additional academic support to finish the year on a positive note, please reach out to your child’s school counselor or teacher. The 2020-2021 school year is a book and our students are the authors. We want to see them write a happy ending and stand ready to assist them as we conclude this school year.
Finally, we have multiple opportunities this month for parents to connect with the staff at Lightridge and each other. We will be hosting Principal Coffee & Chats on Friday, May 7; Thursday, May 20; and Friday, May 21. Our PTSO General Membership meeting will be held on Thursday, May 13 at 7:00 pm. Meeting links for these sessions will be sent via Connect Ed messages. We are also happy to announce we have received approval to hold a Lightridge Dedication Ceremony on Thursday, June 3. More details will follow. While this is our last monthly newsletter of the year, this is not the end of the school year. We still have 6 weeks remaining. I ask all students, parents, and staff, how will your story of the 2020-2021 school year end? Please know I am always here to help with edits and revisions. It is my pleasure to serve the Lightridge community and I look forward to what lies ahead. Together, we light the way! Thank you for taking the time to read our monthly newsletter.

SOL Testing
Change in Required Assessment Process for SY 2020-2021 – High School Courses
SOL Testing begins on Monday, May 3rd and continues through May 25th. Students must use either their school-issued Chromebooks or their AOL-issued computers for testing. No personal devices may be used.
*** IMPORTANT STEPS FOR CHROMEBOOKS BEFORE TEST DAY***
If your school-issued computer is not operational, please email Nathan.Tye@lcps.org immediately so he can arrange for it to be fixed. If you have not been regularly using your Chromebook, you will need to make sure your operating system is up-to-date by doing the following:
Log-in to your computer
Click on the time at the bottom of the screen
Select the icon that looks like a gear to bring up the settings menu
Look at the bottom of the panel on the left and choose “About Chrome OS”
Select “check for updates”
The computer will upload the update, install it, and automatically restart the computer
You should be all set for testing
On the day of testing, you will need to bring your fully-charged school-issued device and your charger.
To view the SOL testing schedule, go to the 2021 Spring SOL Testing Calendar. This calendar will be updated as information becomes available. In addition, each student who is scheduled to take an SOL and their parent/guardian was emailed with the student’s particular testing schedule.
AP EXAMS
Lightridge will administer AP Exams during Administration 2 as decided by LCPS. The AP exam schedule can be found here. Parents/guardians/students must provide their own transportation to the school on the day of testing. Please make every effort to schedule vacations, appointments, or other activities on dates that do not conflict with the testing dates. Make-up testing is permitted for verified emergencies only. Morning exams begin at 7:45 AM and afternoon exams begin at 12:15 PM, with exams lasting between 4-6 hours. Students may not be dismissed from an exam until all students have finished testing.
Additional information for parents and students can be accessed through the College Board’s site and the LCPS website.
If you have Testing questions or concerns, please email Donna Draisey.
