Attendance and Tardies
Greenland Elementary School encourages a strong working partnership between school and home. Communication and attendance are two key components of developing successful Greenland STARs. In accord with Wisconsin Statutes, Section 118.15, a student may be absent for no more than 10 days in a school year. These absences can either be excused because of illness or family emergency or a pre-planned absence such as a vacation. If your family is planning a vacation during the school year there are pre-arranged absence forms online that need to be filled out and approved by Mrs. McCaffery. Any absences following 10 excused absences will need to be excused by a medical provider. The Oconomowoc Area School District understands how life can get busy and in order to provide feedback regarding your child’s attendance the district sends reminder letters to families when/if your child reaches 8 days excused, 3 days unexcused and 5 tardies; a letter will be sent home as your first friendly reminder about attendance. If absences continue to occur other letters may be sent or other intervention to help reduce possible barriers. We want to have a continuous partnership with our families and at any point that you may have questions/concerns or would like to talk in person please feel free to reach out to our student service team anytime. Fostering punctuality and attendance is a shared responsibility between, students, parents and the school.

Lice Information from our District Nurse
Head lice cases have been increasing in number in the US, most commonly among the age group of 3 to 11 years old. With this in mind, we want to offer a little information on how to identify head lice and what you can do if you find them. Lice are tiny insects that feed on blood and stay close to the scalp. They lay eggs called nits, which look a yellow/white color. Unlike dandruff, nits cannot be easily brushed away. A common symptom of a case of head lice is an itchy and inflamed scalp. Head lice are most often spread from direct head-to-head contact, though they also can be spread via objects such as hats, brushes, and hair ribbons that have come in contact with an infested person. Head lice do not cause illness or carry disease and are not related to cleanliness. If you think your child has head lice, talk to your healthcare provider to discuss the best treatment for your family. There are both over the counter and prescription treatment options. On behalf of our school health staff, we want to keep you informed so that you and your student can have great school year. We hope you find this information useful.
Counselor's Corner
In classroom guidance we have been talking about the “Zones of Regulation”. These are the areas in which our feelings fall and describe how well we are controlling our emotions. The four zones are blue, green, yellow and red. We have been talking about “toolboxes” in some of the classes and describing different strategies or “tools” we can use to regulate or control our feelings. Tools include deep breathing, taking a walk or run, doing jumping jacks, reading, drawing, napping, drinking a glass of water and listening to your “inner coach”.
A coach helps and encourages us to be successful in what we are trying to achieve. The inner coach is the voice inside your head that helps and encourages you to be successful in what you are trying to achieve! This is also called positive self-talk. Sometimes when you think negative thoughts, it is called your “inner critic”. Inner critics make us feel worse about a situation. We want to encourage students to use their inner coach to motivate themselves to keep trying, to keep practicing even when it isn’t easy, and to help them figure out ways to succeed when they are not. One writer calls it a personal trainer for your attitude!
Telling yourself “I can do it”, “keep going”, “almost there”, and “don’t give up” are examples of your inner coach talking. Sometimes adults can help kids to develop inner coaches by modeling or talking about what goes on in their own heads. You might say to them, “When I wanted to give up when I was doing _________________, I used my inner coach to tell myself that I could do it and it worked! I was able to finish!!”
Go Team!
