January 2023

Happy New Years!

Welcome Back Burnette Family! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your family. We are so excited to have all our students back with us so we can have an amazing second half of the year!

Teachers have been working on finalizing report cards, and final report cards should be available to view in ParentVue this weekend. The district print and mail all report cards, so these paper copies should arrive in the mail sometime next week.

You might have noticed some construction occurring next door to the school. They are building a retirement community that will have several different facilities to meet the needs of different people. I have been in contact with the construction company and they are dedicated to not interrupting the school day during construction.

This year we have really enjoyed so many exciting events and activities returning to the school calendar. One thing we have really enjoyed is having families able to come to have lunch with their child. I wanted to remind you that when you come to have lunch with your child, we have a few tables available in the cafeteria and we also have picnic tables outside (when the weather is nice) that you can enjoy as well. Also, students should not invite friends to join them when they eat lunch with their parents.

As you can imagine, we have many students with a variety of allergies or dietary restrictions. This can cause a problem when a classmate brings in food (cupcakes, cookies, donuts ...) to celebrate a birthday. To help ensure that all students in your child's class can celebrate we are recommending that parents purchase ice cream for the class instead of sending in treats. You can purchase ice cream for a discounted price ($0.75 a piece) and this will allow each student to choose an ice cream they can eat. Thank you for your understanding.

If there is anything I can do to support you, please don't hesitate to reach out: 678-546-2170, sally.lehmann@gcpsk12.org.

Your Proud Principal,

Dr. Sally Lehmann

Student Headphones

At the beginning of the year, you most likely purchased headphones for your child(ren) as a part of their supply list. We have noticed several students have broken their headphones and are needing another pair. Teachers will be messaging parents of students who need headphones this week. You can purchase headphones yourself, or purchase them for $10 through MyPaymentsPlus. It is important for all students to have headphones at school - if you are unable to supply one for your child please let us know.

Counselor's Corner

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all harmful things. Related to that goal, school counselors are required to present annual personal safety lessons. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, slideshow, role-playing and corresponding activities. During the months of January-April, Ms. Rivas and Rivera, our school counselors will offer sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons to all K-5 students.

Additionally, related to the goal of creating a safe learning environment, House Bill 198 requires that each school system adopt a policy that addresses student suicide prevention. Gwinnett County Public Schools uses Lifelines Prevention, an evidence-based curriculum, to educate students in grades 5, 7, and 9 on the facts about suicide and students’ role in suicide prevention. During the months of January-March, our counselors will offer lessons from the Lifelines Prevention curriculum in our fifth-grade classes. Because one of the main objectives of this curriculum is to encourage our students to identify trusted adults in their lives to whom they can turn if they have concerns about themselves or their friends, we want to provide you with an outline of the three classroom lessons to make it easier for you to talk with your child about these important lessons.

For more information about either of these curriculums, please see review the enclosed links outlining the key concepts that will be taught. Contact your child's counselor, Holly Rivas (K-2) at 678-546-2178 or Sabrina Rivera (3-5) at 678-745-2195 to schedule a preview of the materials or if you have any questions or concerns. If you prefer that your child not participate in the sexual abuse (K-5th grade) and/or suicide prevention (5th grade only) lessons, please write and sign a note indicating your preferences and send it to your child’s teacher or school counselor.
