South Pacific Ocean
2,300 miles from Chile’s west coast and 2,500 miles east of Tahiti
Known as Rapa Nui (first human inhabitants) to its earliest inhabitants
Dutch explorers named it "Easter Island" in honor of the day of their arrival in 1722
It was annexed by Chile in the late 19th century
Maintains an economy based largely on tourism
Almost 900 giant stone figures
Figures are shaped like heads, weigh several tons and each vary in size from about 20-50 feet tall
