Information/Updates about Westerville Central High School
Message from Mr. Lanier
Spring Break is right around the corner!! I can't believe how quickly this school year is flying by. To our Seniors, make sure you are taking care of your academic responsibilities and make good choices to close out your time at Central. We are looking forward to celebrating your successes throughout the month of May. To our underclassmen, make it a goal to have this be your best academic quarter of the school year so that you have momentum going in to next year.
Spring is also a time in our school when we will administer many standardized tests. Please look for communication about the test dates; bell schedule changes; and transportation changes in correspondence throughout this season. We will use this newsletter; the One Call Now system; and our website to communicate the information ahead of time so that you are able to plan accordingly.
Let's have a great last week before Spring Break.

Blue Ribbon Work
Following the tragic loss of Westerville police officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli on February 10, citizens and businesses throughout the community displayed blue ribbons, posters, and blue lights, in their memory. Police Chief Joe Morbitzer released a letter to the public on Wednesday, addressing the end of the official mourning period for the police department and expressing gratitude for all the support they have received during the past month. “It is our goal to live the ideals and values of Tony and Eric each and every day,” he wrote. “It is a personal decision when you feel it is the right time to change out light bulbs and remove the ribbons.” The city set up a recycling bin for those who wished to remove their ribbons, and Chief Morbitzer suggested that during Police Memorial Week, May 11-16 each year, citizens might choose to display blue ribbons and bulbs in memory of all officers killed in the line of duty.
On March 9, transition students from Westerville Central, North and South high schools were joined by the Westerville Central K.U.B. Club (be Kind.beUnique.always be your Best) to clean, sort, fold and transform blue ribbons collected from around the city into bows that will be placed along State Street during Police Memorial Week in May.

Nationwide Children's Hospital Presents to Health Pathways Students
Sue Doud and Gretchen Dennis spoke with health pathway students at WCHS about career opportunities at Nationwide Children's Hospital. They introduced students to a number of careers in health care; Sterile Technician, Genetic Counselor,Child Life Specialist, Security, and Environmental Services. They then focused their presentation on the career of Medical Laboratory Scientists. Medical Laboratory Scientists are highly in demand with 11,000 anticipated job openings in 2018 and only 6,000 graduates coming out of school. These workers are considered the unsung heroes of medical care, who provide the information that makes up over 94% of medical records. With a variety of specialties and opportunities for career advancement and tuition assistance many students found themselves interested in exploring potential careers as Medical Laboratory Scientists.
This is the second year that Nationwide Children's has visited Central to encourage students to explore potential health care career paths. Doud and Dennis also provided students with opportunities they could explore now if they are interested in health care.

ACT Testing: March 20
Warhawk Nation,
This is a reminder that Central is administering the ACT to Juniors March 20, 2018. Students taking the test were pre-registered last week.
Students taking the ACT:
All students who are taking the ACT should arrive to school by 7:25 a.m. Bus transportation is provided in the morning for students who ride the bus. Testing will begin promptly in the morning. This is a national standardized test and all testing rules apply. See the information on the ACT website (act.org) for details about what is permitted and not permitted during testing. It is imperative that students follow these rules or their test could be invalidated. Electronic devices are absolutely not permitted to be accessed during the time of the testing (even during breaks). Please re-emphasize this with your student(s) who are taking the test Tuesday.
Students not taking the ACT:
Students not taking the ACT do not have to be at school during the testing. The district is providing a second bus run to transport non-tested students to school at a later time. Students will be picked up from their normal bus stop 3 hours after their regular pick-up time on this day. We encourage students to take advantage of this second bus run as they will be in a quiet study hall for the duration of the ACT test if they come to school at their normal time. As an FYI, breakfast will not be served to the second bus run students as lunches will begin shortly after their arrival to school.
We will run a modified bell schedule for the remainder of the day after testing is completed.
1st Period: 11:04-11:16 a.m.
2nd Period/HR: 11:20-11:35 a.m.
3rd Period: 11:39-11:51 a.m.
4th Period: 11:55 a.m.-12:25 p.m.
5th Period: 12:29-12:59 p.m.
6th Period: 1:03-1:33 p.m.
7th Period: 1:37-1:49 p.m.
8th Period: 1:53-2:05 p.m.

Course Selection Verification
Students and parents should log into PowerSchool the week of 3/19-3/23 to check course selections for next school year. Students have registered for classes through PowerSchool in February; met with their counselor in February and March; and this is one last check to verify that the courses indicated are what students will take next year. Students will receive a verification sheet in their HR Monday. Students ONLY NEED TO RETURN THE FORM TO THE COUNSELING OFFICE IF THEY HAVE CHANGES THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO MAKE NO LATER THAN MARCH 23.
