What We're Looking For
Educational researchers like Robert Marzano and John Hattie support what practitioners already know: when students are actively engaged in the learning process, achievement increases. This idea has manifested itself in the STEM subjects as project-based learning and hands-on experiments, but the English Language Arts field tends to be left out. We owe it to ourselves and our students to increase active engagement in the ELA classroom. Further, teachers must also engage in the professional networking and learning process in order to positively grow and evolve. As such, the KCTE Conference will be focused on teacher and student engagement. We are currently seeking conference proposals from innovative professionals on the following topics:
Project, problem, and/or performance-based learning
Research-based, teacher-tested, student-vetted instructional strategies that promote student engagement
Engaging reading, writing, and vocabulary strategies
Inquiry-based instruction
Professional networking
Engaging in the political process as educators
Genius hour
Literacy across the curriculum
This list is not exhaustive; KCTE will consider any proposal that promotes student and/or teacher engagement.
About Us
The Kentucky Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts, Inc. is an incorporated non-profit, service organization for Kentucky English and Language Arts teachers of all levels (Kindergarten-Graduate School). Membership dues and conference registrations support our journal, The Kentucky English Bulletin, our newsletter, the annual conference, the student writing contest, and the grants and awards we present to deserving educators in the ELA field. The over 200 members of KCTE/LA create a vibrant organization which has been recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as one of the more active state affiliates.
