Message From Our Principal
Westbrook Families,
I hope this message finds you and your family doing well after our snow storm and the cold weather today! While it seems like long ago I do hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and was able to enjoy some time with family and friends. The first week back staff across the building took some dedicated time to connect with students to foster build back positive relationships. It was nice to see so many excited students enter back in to the building and hear wonderful stories about their winter break. This week all students met with either Mrs. Rode or I to remind students of building wide expectations. The language used across the building is that we want all students to "Be Safe, Be Kind, or Be Their Best." While this may look different in different areas, this consistent language helps to reinforce the expectations here at Westbrook. While transitioning back to school can be challenging for some students, most students have done an excellent job readjusting to meet our expectations.
As I shared at the PTA meeting, this is an exciting time at the primary buildings! We are approaching the half way point in the year and all of the relationships, classroom communities and learning environments are functioning well and this is the time when we see tremendous academic growth from our students! We of course see growth from the start of the year to winter break, but the growth that occurs from winter break to the end of the year is truly remarkable! The knowledge of our staff here at Westbrook to be able to provide differentiated learning to meet the needs of all students is seen across the building!
We also have the schedule set for our first and second grade spring musical performances. Please see the link below to find out more very important information about attending these performances as well as the schedule for individual classes! We are very much looking forward to having these performances again here on the Westbrook stage!
Thank you to all of our families that participate in drop off and pick up for their patience as we navigate our parking lots during winter weather. Your patience and safe driving is very much appreciated! Please see below for more information regarding winter weather procedures here at Westbrook and in Glenview!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Patrick

Winter Weather at Westbrook and Across the District
Here at Westbrook, we try to go outside for recess as much as possible! We know that movement breaks and some fresh air are both important for all students! There are some times when it is not possible to have outdoor recess and our priority will be to keep all students safe. Please be sure to send students with winter gear each day, as the decision for outdoor recess is often made as close to recess as possible. If the "feels like" temperature is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, students will be kept indoors. If play structure or fields are extremely wet or icy, students may also be kept indoors. When is doubt, please send your students with winter weather gear!
In order to play in snowy conditions, students need five essentials items. These items include; boots, snowpants, jackets, gloves or mittens and headwear(hat or ear muffs). If a student does not have one of these items, they will be allowed to play on the blacktop and in some instances the playground.
With winter upon us and more snow on the horizon, we wanted to remind families that this year, our procedures are different than the previous three years, with a return to the use of traditional "snow days." Though the Board approved an e-Learning plan for the District in August, that plan is an insurance policy, with remote learning days to be used only in extreme situations. If we experience inclement weather that would make it unsafe (or impossible) for staff and students to get to school, or other emergency situation, schools will be closed, no iPads required.
For many students, school is the safest place to be, even in bad weather, so the decision to close schools comes after a great deal of review, thought and collaboration with our Buildings and Grounds department, the Village, our transportation providers, and other local school district officials (as outlined in our full guidelines).
The District will post on our website and social media channels, and send emails and text messages when there are closures or other weather-related impacts to school operations. To ensure that you receive notification, log into PowerSchool to check that your phone numbers and emails are correct.
