Readers Assemble
CR Library Leads the Way in Inspiring Readers & Leaders
You are the HERO of Your Own Story
3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will begin the first challenge as they learn about the Texas Bluebonnet Books for the 2014-15 school year. These 20 books have been specially selected as new and outstanding books for this age group. Students are asked to read 5 books between now and the end of January, at which time all qualified students will vote for the statewide winner. Using the Aurasma app and augmented reality, students can view book trailers about each title to help them select where to begin.
September kicks off our Wonderful Words Poetry Challenge for all students. Each student will receive a bookmark that includes a poem and activity selected specifically for his or her grade level. Activities are designed to support grade level TEKS and provide a fun was for students to experience and enjoy poetry. Our goal is 100% participation in this challenge. All participants will earn a special assembly by traveling performers in Poetry Alive in April 2015.

CR Library NEEDS You!
Students check out an average of 4000+ books every month!
This means that we shelve at least 200 books every single day.
While Mrs. Howk is busy reading stories, helping students find just-right books, teaching research skills, and challenging students with creative technology, we could sure use your help with sorting and shelving books! Hours are flexible! The environment is warm and inviting, although we don't always guarantee quiet.

A Library Transformed!
Through your generous support of PTA and our school book fairs, we are transforming the library to make it a place that is welcoming and providing students with opportunities to experience the best learning opportunities available.
In the past months, our library has added new furniture that is comfortable and inviting for students. Our district has provided an interactive White Board and the teaching area now includes a large colorful rug for storytime. Through book fairs, we raised funds to purchase iPads so that students can now work in one-on-one technology lessons. Bond funds will be providing additional technology that include Chromebooks and Nexus tables.
One of our biggest changes is with our fiction area of chapter books. Mrs. Howk has genrefied! This means that the books are now organized in a manner that makes it easier for students and teachers to find books that will interest each reader. There are 11 genres ranging from historical fiction to sports to science fiction. Readers can now search for books by what type of story they like to read. Perhaps they will even uncover some books they've never even explored before.
It's an exciting time - stop by to see how our library is changing and growing!
PHOTOS - Where?
Why do you only see the backs of students heads and never their beautiful faces?
Or why do you always see the same few students being featured?
It's because so few of our students have permission to have their photos or names in public media. NEISD requires that students must have permission specifically given if we want to post names, work, or likenesses of students.
While we will always do everything within our power to protect your children, this does severely limit our ability to share and celebrate student work and achievements. Many of our students are completing amazing digital works, such as the instructional videos and posters that the 5th grade students created during library orientation last week. But their audience is limited to only showing them within our school, rather than posting some of them on our library web page for all to benefit from.
How can you change this?

Click that your student has permission to share Name, Work, Likeness on the internet
Communicate with your child's teacher if you have special concerns about names being given out. I know that typically in the library I would not include names with photos, or if we did, it would be first names only.
Nathan Hale Author Visit
Students are invited to create their own historical comic strip and win a change to join Nathan Hale for lunch. All entries must be turned in by Friday, September 26th. You may draw your own comic by hand, or you are welcome to create on on an ipad or computer. Create one page that shows and tells about an interesting event in history!
Books are also available for pre-order, so that Nathan Hale can autograph them during his visit. Notices will come home with students and all pre-orders and money are due back by Friday, Sept. 12th. Books will be delivered and autographed on Oct. 1st.
