Hiawatha Elementary
Week of January 25th
Hello Husky Families-
We are excited to welcome back our Kindergarten and 1st grade students this week to the building. Please see the hybrid section below with the link to the parent handbook with all information you need. Please remember to check your email every morning and fill out the Raptor self-certification for your child before arriving at school.
Join us on Friday, January 29th at 1:15 for the Husky Pride Assembly. We look forward to highlighting our 2nd graders this month!
Please continue to make sure your child is in attendance everyday. Student attendance is very important to your child’s success this school year and we need to work together on this. Please remember that if your child is going to be absent for any reason, you need to call the school office at 708-795-2327 to report the absence.
Please remember to continue to do your part to help stop the spread of this virus in our community. Please remember to always wear your mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing and avoid large gatherings.
Stay safe and healthy Huskies!

Remote Learning Tips
A few reminders to help remote learning be successful for your child…
Please make sure your child has their iPad and Logitech Crayon charged and is ready each day.
Keep your students schedule nearby to help them know what is coming next in their day.
Keep a small box of supplies near the child’s learning area so they can quickly have access to what they need throughout the day.
Headphones are also very helpful when you have more than one child on devices and will help everyone to focus.
A quiet area away from the tv is also very important.

Social Work Support
My name is Katelyn McCloskey. I am the School Social Worker at Hiawatha. My role at Hiawatha is to work with students to help them be successful in the classroom through teaching coping skills, problem solving skills and expression of feelings. There are a lot of extra stressors put on children and families in the time of Covid-19. If you are ever in need of support please feel free to contact me.

Parents Role: In Supporting Social Emotional Learning at Home
Parents have a vital role in raising a self-aware, respectful, responsible child who knows how to manage his or her emotions, make good decisions, and resolve conflicts non-violently.
Keep in mind before you are able to care for anyone; you first need to care for yourself. Take time to do things you enjoy, take time for yourself emotionally. Parents need to take care of themselves, as well, in order to set their children up for success.
At home, you can strive to create an environment of trust, respect and support. Modeling “emotionally intelligent” behavior at home is the first step in nurturing intelligent children. We all get frustrated and angry, but how we handle this can make a big difference. Below you will find coping techniques that can help both you or your child when upset. If you model these coping strategies to cool down, you can show your child how to handle these sometimes negative emotions in a responsible manner.
-Cool Off the Pizza: Pretend you have a hot slice of pizza in your hand. Take a deep breath in to smell the pizza, then slowly breathe out as if you are trying to cool down the pizza, then repeat 4-5 times.
-Mindfulness 5-4-3-2-1: Have your child find 5 things they can see, 4 things they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, and 1 thing they can taste.
-Count to ten: Sometimes counting to 10 goes by too quickly and you may not feel calm once you are done, so add rhyming words to your counting. You can achieve this by: 1 sun, 2 shoe, 3 tree, 4 door, 5 hive, 6 sticks, 7 heaven, 8 plate, 9 line, 10 pen. As you think of words that rhyme it slows you down and helps to calm you.
