What's happening at ES1?
Homework reminders:
Each night scholars should be practicing their sight words for the current week and the words from previous weeks. Scholars should also set aside time each night to build fluency with math facts in order to prepare for work with multi-step problems later in the year.
Science
This month in science we have been studying structures and functions within the animal world. We have welcomed some new class pets: goldfish and water snails. We also looked at the structures and behaviors of birds. Students then used their knowledge of animal bodies and habitats to design their own fictional animal using different animal structures.
Wilson
In first grade, we have begun phonics instruction using a curriculum called Wilson. We have been reviewing letter names, sounds, and letter formation. The benefit of the Wilson program is scholars are explicitly taught phonics patterns, which helps them spell unfamiliar words and decode unknown words so they become better readers.
In Math and Problem Solving we will be working on place value. Scholars are introduced to the concept that ten ones make a complete ten. Scholars can then skip count by 10s. Scholars will be able to decompose (break apart) numbers under 30 into tens and ones by the end of this unit.
