Math
The beginning of our first math unit focuses on our ability to notice the differences and similarities of objects. We discussed how an object can be matched by pattern, color, or size. Students were able to create sets of objects based on their use, such as a place setting. We wrapped the week up by sorting objects into two groups. It was fun to see that we could sort the same objects into various groups. We enjoyed learning how others came up with different ways to sort the objects.
Reading
This week we launched our readers' workshop model. Some of our mini lessons revolved around how we pick and take care of books; the difference between private reading and partner reading; learn-about-the world books (non-fiction); and exploring how we are all readers already. We spent some time reading books by ourselves and with a partner.
Getting to Know Each Other
All week, we enjoyed many different name activities. Not only are we practicing how to write our names, but we got to know the names of our classmates as well. We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and built a palm tree with our name. The next day we read Chrysanthemum and noticed that her name is really long. We measured how long our names are by cutting apart each letter and gluing them to a class graph. Another fun name activity was to make our first class book. Each student had their own page to write their name and draw a picture of themselves.
Social Emotional Learning
We got to meet the Peekapak Pals. Leo the Hedgehog wrote us a note to share how nervous he was about his first day of school. We gave him some ideas of how to clam down when he feels nervous. He introduced us to his classmates and we read about his class' first day of school. They all struggled to control their feelings, but Leo was able to help them to talk about how they were feeling.
