Storey Spartans Weekly Update

May 17th - May 21st

Principal's Message

Hello Storey Families,

TK and Kindergarten registration is still ongoing. You may begin the registration process through the online Fresno Unified registration. If you are unable to complete the registration process online, please contact our office and schedule an appointment so we can help complete this registration. The Storey number is 253-6530

This past week, letters were sent home regarding Summer School. If you received a letter, please return it to the office. This is valuable information allowing our district to fill any openings if a child is unable to attend. Also, for all families Fresno Unified is offering Summer Enrichment opportunities. If you are interested, please visit the Fresno Unified website and sign up. Information regarding the summer enrichment programs can also be found on our Storey social media page.

Lastly, we are in the middle of iReady testing. This week, our kindergarten and first graders will be completing their assessment and our 5th and 6th grade will be beginning this week as well. Please help your child by making sure they get a good night’s rest and if they are working from home, have a nice quiet place so they can focus and try their best. Our other grades will be starting the following week

We look forward to a great week. Thank you for your support of Storey Elementary. And remember together we are Spartan Strong!

Respectfully,

Mrs. Shirley

Principal

ELPAC Testing

ELPAC testing has begun!

Each year, students across California who are considered English Learners, take a test called ELPAC. This test is very important; it determines whether or not your student is reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English at their grade level. Students who do well on the test are considered proficient in the English language, will Redesignate and no longer be considered an English Learner. Students who Redesignate by 6th grade will have more course options for electives in Middle School and are far more likely to be successful in high school and graduate.

The test will be given on Teams this year, for the first time. Parents, expect to see a new meeting on your child's Teams calendar. For grades 1st - 6th, our teachers and admin will be calling in students to test via Teams.

Please partner with us to make this new testing experience a success! Please read the rules and expectations in the pages below:

3rd-6th Gr. State Testing Waved for the 2021 School Year!

Important State Testing Information

The district appreciates the continued patience of families as it adapts to accommodate the many challenges presented by the pandemic. The California Department of Education recently received approval for a federal waiver that allows districts flexibility in administering end-of-the-year English language arts and mathematics assessments. The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment (SBAC) exams were waived last spring due to COVID-19 closures and Fresno Unified used Curriculum Associate’s i-Ready tool as a measure of student learning during the pandemic. Using this tool allowed the district to collect baseline and national comparison data for use throughout the pandemic.

The i-Ready tool is already planned for administration for students in kindergarten through 10th grade beginning in May. Fresno Unified will use the flexibility to administer only i-Ready as opposed to giving both SBAC and i-Ready in the last two months of school. i-Ready meets the California State Board of Education’s criteria and will continue to enable the district to identify student strengths and areas for growth.

Students in 11th grade will still take the SBAC as they are not scheduled to take i-Ready, and SBAC for 11th grade provides the Early Assessment Program scores for participating community colleges and California State Universities. The SBAC has been modified and shortened this year. Both assessments can be administered in person, remotely, or a combination of both.

Using the i-Ready is beneficial for Fresno Unified in several ways: All teachers are trained in administering i-Ready, have administered the assessment twice in the 2020-21 and are preparing to give i-Ready in the last quarter; parents and families are familiar with the i-Ready data; comparison data are already available from a fall and winter administrations while the most recent SBAC was administered at the end of the 2018-19 school year; summer extended learning opportunities are designed to use i-Ready data to guide the focus of the summer programs; and i-Ready data is available for local, state, and national comparisons to better understand the impacts COVID closures have had on all students.

With the transition back to in-person learning and teachers’ continued adjustments to meet the needs of all students -- both in person and remotely -- reducing the time spent on testing and utilizing i-Ready tools to measure student learning will be advantageous for students.

ATLAS Attendance

School is in session Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm for grades 1-6 and 9:00 am - 1:20 pm for TK/K. Our district expectation is that your child is with their teacher or completing independent work during those hours.

We have had incidents of students logging out of class before the school day is over, or simply not returning from a break. Anytime a student misses more than 30 minutes of school it will be noted on their attendance record. Parents, please make sure your child returns to class after each break, and stays logged in for the entire school day. Attendance Matters!

  • Please call our office if your child will be absent or has an appointment during the school day.
  • District-generated phone calls go out to homes at 12:15 p.m. to report and clear absences.
  • If you have questions about attendance please call our office.
