Skyline K-8
April 5, 2019
Principal's Message
Skyline K-8 Community,
Happy Friday! I hope you all had a nice, relaxing spring break. Please do not forget Monday is a Teacher Planning Day and there is no school. Report cards will be sent home with elementary students on Friday. Middle School report cards are mailed out from the district office the end of next week.
A huge shout out to Ms. Kindred and her 6th and 7th drama students for their amazing performances of “The Dollup” and “The Bad Room” on Thursday. They were so fun to watch.
Next week on April 10th and April 11th I will be at a Multi-Tiered Systems Support district training. Allison Couch will be here subbing for me. She is really excited to be back and helping out here at Skyline.
For next year based on our current staffing allocation and numbers, we plan to offer straight grade level classes for students in kindergarten, first, second and third grade. The plan is to have three sections of 4/5 blended classes to alleviate two projected classes of 18 and a projected class of 31 students. This is a district decision to only support blended classrooms in grades 4/5 classes where needed. The district will be offering additional support for 4/5 teachers through the Office Of School Performance in identifying priority standards and how the two grade levels and standards will be taught concurrently. We know this is a change in our current practice and sometimes change is hard, but I am committed to ensuring we are making the best decisions for student success and providing the best support for staff during this transition. If our enrollment numbers increase/decrease and there are any changes, I will be sure to send out a communication. Please know I am here to help and my door is always open if anyone wants to talk. Thank you all so much for your understanding and support.
Have a nice, relaxing weekend.

Counselor's Corner
Next week marks the beginning of the final quarter of the 2018-2019 school year. 4th quarter is a time for students to show their learning during testing, and reflect on their growth through this school year. We will be starting the quarter off with a schoolwide refresher on behavior expectations this Thursday, April 11th. You can help your students remember to Be Safe, Responsible, Respectful, and IB, by discussing what those expectations mean to them and recognizing those positive behaviors when you see them outside of the school day.
Have a wonderful week,
Amy Gervais
School Counselor
IB Corner
Today we celebrated the students who demonstrated being KNOWLEDGEABLE. As we have a school full of knowledgeable students it is nice to recognize a few and celebrate with them. Next month we will be looking for our REFLECTIVE students. To be REFLECTIVE:
“We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development”
Our next IB assembly will be on May 3rd at 8:45 am. Please keep a look out for your REFLECTIVE students!

Testing
Beginning when we get back from Spring Break, April 15th, Skyline’s 3-8 grade students will be starting on their State Testing. The Oregon Statewide Assessment System. OSAS, or formally known as the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, SBAC, is the assessment that the students will take. As the teachers will go over the practice test with the students in class I am attaching the link for you to look at it with your students at home. The practice test helps students feel more comfortable navigating through the technology pieces that they will not be able to get help with once they begin their assessment. I have seen over many years that sometimes simply understanding the mechanics of how to drag and drop, write fractions and other technology elements involved with this assessment, alleviated a lot of unnecessary stress related to the test.

I will send out more information after our Spring Break regarding testing, yet in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

TAG Information
Dear TAG Families,
Please join us on April 9, 2019 for the second in a three-part series entitled Characteristics of Giftedness. This session will focus on perfectionism in gifted children. Please see the attached flyer for details.
Warm regards,
PPS TAG Department
Skyline Families who are interested in applying to Access. The Application is now available. You can find the application on the TAG website on the front page and in the ACCESS link on the TAG page as well. It is also on the ACCESS school website. The process guide can also be found on both the school’s website and the TAG website under ACCESS. Parents, you must also fill out a SchoolMint application. That link is also on the ACCESS application. If a child has already completed the ACCESS Application and was included in the lottery for the years 17-18 and 18-19, they only have to do a short form, which is on the ACCESS application and they will still need to do the SchoolMint application. They do not need to go through the whole ACCESS application process.
Reminder that students applying for ACCESS must have a 99% in one of the 3 areas of TAG identification; Intellectual, Math and/or Reading AS WELL AS a demonstrated need for an alternative program. These indicators are also in the ACCESS Process Guide found on the ACCESS school site and the TAG Dept website. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any support.

Move for the Arts
Our annual Move for the Arts FUNdraiser and field day are right around the corner. FUNdraising forms will be coming home after April 19 and field day is May 17. We are reaching out to families with business connections who would be able to help contribute. In particular, we are looking for support of a large number of small prizes for attaining fundraising levels. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution of in-kind items. If you are interested in business sponsorship, please let us know at fpstudioschool@gmail.com. We would be happy to discuss what would work for you.
Because of the generosity of Skyline families for our fundraising efforts, our annual Move for the Arts FUNdraiser, we are able to fund both our visual art program and field day event with this single effort. Community support from businesses provides fundraising prizes, volunteers for our event and services, such as photography and sponsorship. Your support is vitally important, and we are so grateful to you.

This is for 2nd graders and 3rd graders who haven't played before.
In AA ball there is a mixture of pitching machines, coach pitch, and player pitch. As always, the emphasis is on fundamental skills, including pitching, and the players begin to develop the ability to hit competitive pitching from an opposing player. Typically the season begins with machine pitch with a transition to player pitch as the season progresses. The season starts in April and goes through mid-June. AA Teams usually start with 2 practices per week and then as games get into full swing, practices may be just once per week. Games are typically played 2x per week.
