Out on a Limb with Jim - Message from the Athletic Director
Football
The Varsity Football team has captured momentum going into district play with two good wins against Slaton and Sundown. The Eagles took the short trip South on FM 400 and beat the Tigers 33-22, then the following week won a back and forth game against Sundown 29-26. The Varsity and JV had a much needed bye week and have been resting up for the start of district play against Stanton.
The sub-varsity teams continue to have success as well on Thursday nights. The 7th grade won against Slaton but lost their first game against Wellington. The 8th grade lost in Slaton but beat a previously unbeaten Wellington team the following week. Both the 7th and 8th grade teams have 3-1 records as they enter play against Stanton at home this Thursday night.
XC
Our varsity XC teams traveled to Las Cruces, New Mexico to run in the Organ Mountain XC meet on Saturday, September 24. Thanks to the athletics boosters, Robert and Crystal Cervantes, and our Acuff Cotton Field Trot t-shirt fundraiser, we were able to raise enough money to fund this amazing overnight trip for our runners. Our kids got to run in a big meet out of state, and experience some new things including stops in Ruidoso and White Sands National Park. At the meet, our high school girls were nervous about running 3.1 miles (other states have boys and girls run a 5k race, not the 2-mile race like we do). Despite their trepidation, they performed so well, that they ended up placing 2nd overall, out of twenty schools in the meet. Abby Daniel placed tenth, earning a medal. Our boys raced against some tough teams and placed 6th overall. Dax Mahan was our top finisher, placing 11th, with a 17:25. Billy Bond finished 14th with a 17:40. In all, five boys ran under 20 minutes on the hilly, sand-filled course. We will head to Spur, Texas next, competing in the Silver Spur Meet on October 1st.
JH Girls Basketball
The JH Girls Basketball teams will start preparing for their season next week. The teams will begin before school practices from 7:15-8am starting Tuesday, Oct. 4. Please make sure you check the Athletic Calendar each week to confirm when your daughter will be having practice before school. The 7th and 8th Grade A teams will practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The 7th and 8th B teams will practice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Graduating Class: 2001
Sports Played: XC and Track
Soccer in a local league. Soccer was always my passion; most of my running career was to get in shape for soccer.
Occupation: US Army Officer (Lieutentant Colonel)
Resides: Broadlands, VA (Washinton D. C area)
Family: Wife Amanda (8 years) was born and raised in Boston. We have a daughter that started Kindegarten this year and an 11-month old that is already showing a penchant for mischieveousness.
Tid Bits: Jonathan is on a very short and distinguished list of Roosevelt Athletes that have competed at the State Championship level. He accomplished this three times in his illustrious running career. He was runner up in the State Cross County Meet and in the 3200 Meter in Track his junior year (2000). Then as a Senior in 2001, he stood atop the winners stand taking 1st place in the 3200 meter. Of course he won multiple District and Regional Championships in Cross Country and Track. Jonathan is the first graduate of Roosevelt to attend the prestigious West Point Academy, and was instrumental in assisting recent 2022 graduate, Alex Trevino, become the second Eagle to attend West Point. Jonathan's efforts and success at Roosevelt proves that good guys do finish first and is a great role model for all our students. While visiting Roosevelt recently, he was asked if he always loved running by a student and he responded, "I didn't like running but I loved competing." Certainly wise and relevant words to all our student-athletes who must endure and embrace the grind of training to be successful and fierce competitors.
College: Undergrad - United States Military Academy (West Point); Graduate - University of Texas at El Paso. BS in Law; MA in Leadership.
High School Highlights: "Winning the State Championship in the 3200 was my greatest achievement, bu the first time I was able to beat my teammates Adrian, Orlando, and Clint in Cross Country was my most meaningul race. I looked up to them and didn't think I'd ever be able to catch them. That race gave me the confidence to keep pushing harder."
Positive Memories at Roosevelt: "I truly loved my time at Roosevelt. . . being able to see your freinds every day and participate in a wide variety of athletic and academic events was amazing. While running intervals inside the school during bad weather was never a positive memory, I always loved playing pick-up football and basketball. A close 2nd was Mrs. Hennington's cinnamon rolls."
What makes Roosevelt a unique place: "I'll always appreciate that the Roosevelt community showed me that there are people who care for you and that you can trust. In a world that has many unsavory actors and dangerous situations, I've been able to rely on the fact that there are good people that will look out for you. That was evident with my classmates, teachers, church, and the broader community. The only two places I've ever felt that trust are within the Roosevelt community and with fellow Soldiers. When I vsited Roosevelt a few month ago it was clear that the community still cares about each other and I was grateful to see such wonderful people (my daughter talked about Officer McCann for days)."
