Principal's Corner
Kirk Families,
As we approach our initial fundraising efforts, I want to send out some important information. In an effort to streamline processes, Kirk Administration will be facilitating all fundraising efforts for the 2022-23 school year. If you are ever asked to donate to Kirk, it will be done directly through the school or the fundraising company, such as Boosterthon. If at any time you would like to donate to Kirk, please reach out directly to the school, so we can help you through that process. We are thankful for the continued support of our Kirk community.

PBIS
We are excited to announce that students will begin using PBIS Rewards. This allows everyone in the school to recognize your Mighty Tiger when they are meeting behavior expectations anywhere in the school, not just in the classroom. A letter will come home with information on how to access PBIS Rewards and see in real time how your Mighty Tiger is doing during their school day.
Our Mighty Tigers are continuing to show what it is like to be K.I.R.K throughout the building. The students work on being independent. These are ways they are independent in the school building. At home, look for how your Mighty Tiger is independent by using the “Kind at Home Matrix”.
If your Tiger is displaying K.I.R.K behavior at home, please fill out this Google Form. They will receive a special incentive from Mrs. Sanchez.
BOTB
For the month of October, our Mighty Tigers are learning what Integrity means, what it means to do the right thing even when it is difficult and ways they can show honesty and trustworthiness. Below are the presentations that the students viewed in their classrooms to learn more about Kirk Elementary.
This is a wonderful opportunity to talk to your Mighty Tiger about how they show Integrity at school and how they can show it at home.

Library Corner
Tigers!
We are getting so close to having the library ready. I’ve been working hard on setting the library up by moving books back in and arranging the new furniture. It looks so pretty and I can’t wait to have students back in the library
Your Librarian,
Mrs. Gallegos
Primary Practices
Wow, Primary Tigers! The first nine weeks are almost over! To keep our minds sharp and finish strong, we need to build our brain muscles by taking care of ourselves. Remember to get a good night’s sleep, eat healthy snacks, and come to school and stay in school every day all day! Read here for ways to keep your child healthy, stay active, and be successful in elementary school.
Adventures in Mathematics
In Second grade, students are applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction up to 120. Students will use words such as, regrouping when they are adding numbers that equal more than ten. Check out this VIDEO to see how students are using place value to help with addition and subtraction.
Third, Fourth and Fifth graders are working on their multiplication unit. Third grade focuses on the basic understanding of multiplication being equal groups of something and how to represent that using arrays. Fourth grade builds on the representations of multiplication using arrays, area models, and strip diagrams. Fifth grade takes the previous grade levels' foundation and adds decimals to the mix. Working on memorizing basic multiplication facts up to 12x12 will provide students the upper hand when solving problems. Flash cards, playing cards, and Uno cards are ways to practice facts at home.
Science Scholars
Second and Third grade students are starting to learn about Forces. Students in second grade will be tracing and comparing patterns of movement of objects such as sliding, rolling, and spinning over time. In third grade students will demonstrate and observe how position and motion can be changed by pushing and pulling objects such as swings, balls, and wagons. Parents can use various objects at home and have conversations about the movement and changes in motion.
Fourth grade is wrapping up their Life Science unit learning about food chains and food webs. Food chains show students the importance of plants and animals, producers and consumers, predators and prey. Food webs build on the food chain, focusing on how energy is given to each organism.
Fifth grade has begun learning about Geology. To start, the students are reminded of the way the Earth’s surface is changed due to weathering, erosion and deposition. Students can see this in the real world through floods, hurricanes and tornadoes (these are examples of rapid changes).
Loving Literacy
Wow, Tigers! It’s hard to believe but the first nine weeks are almost over! Our third through fifth graders have been hard at work learning all about fiction texts. They have been studying the characters in their books by looking at their actions, thoughts, and feelings to determine their traits as well as their motivations and relationships. In writing, the third graders are hard at work composing personal narratives about an important person, place, or thing in their life while the fourth and fifth graders are using what they learned in reading about fiction to compose their own fiction stories. As we wrap up the fiction units and move into an informational unit, it is important for our students to continue reading at home in order to practice the skills they have learned.

Chromebook Information/Reminders
A Chromebook is checked out to each CFISD student for daily use within our classrooms. Through ClassLink (my.cfisd.net), our students have access to their schoolwork (Schoology) and various District approved online resources.
Additional information about our Chromebook:
A Chromebook with an attached protective case and a charger are checked out to each student. Some students have the older Chromebook without a case. If they have a Chromebook with a case, then they are to leave the case on.
Each Chromebook has a student identification sticker on the front and a District asset tag on the back. DO NOT remove these stickers. If a Chromebook needs to be returned for any reason, these stickers help us ensure it is linked to the correct student’s account.
Chargers are to remain at home, unless the teacher has instructed your student differently. Chromebooks should be charged at home and come to school fully charged.
Students should not place stickers or draw on any part of the Chromebook. Remember it is a device loaned to students by CFISD.
Students log onto their Chromebook using their Google ID and password. This information will be provided by your child’s teacher. Please keep it in a safe place at home.
If a password needs to be changed, go to stugo.cfisd.net on any device and follow the directions to change their password.
If a student has an issue with their Chromebook (lost/cracked screen, missing keys, not working), he/she will need to create a Happy Fox ticket through their ClassLink (my.cfisd.net) account by logging in with their Google ID/password. Remember, if the device is intentionally damaged, a replacement charge will be assessed through SchoolCash.
If a student leaves CFISD, all devices MUST be returned to the campus—Chromebook, protective case, charger, and hot spot (if assigned). A charge will be assessed for any items not returned.
If a student leaves Kirk and transfers to another CFISD school, the device will go with them to their new school.
Nurse’s Corner
It is beginning to feel like fall in Houston! Please remind your child that although it is cool in the morning, they need to take off their jackets, sweaters, or sweatshirts for recess. It is much warmer in the afternoon and we have students getting overheated while playing during recess. This causes a problem because we have to watch them and help them cool down and they miss part of lunch. Please send your student a bottle or cup for water every day, so they can drink water throughout the day.
Counselor Corner
One of the best things you can do for your child is to read with them for at least 20 minutes each day. Reading together grows your bond, sparks their imagination, expands their vocabulary, improves their emotional intelligence, and more! It also shows your child that you are willing to spend quality time with them even after you both have had a busy or hectic day.

Musical Magic
Hello Kirk Mighty Tigers!
All students will be focusing on “Rhythm”. We will be creating our own rhythms on every grade level and having lots of fun while playing, reading, and moving to our created rhythms.
The choir will begin on Monday, October 10, we will perform The Nutcracker, so get ready for a great performance of singing and dancing.
Our 3rd graders are preparing for our Veteran’s Day Program on November 11th, so Music is busy, busy, busy

Hello Kirk Tigers! We’ve been rocking our hand-eye coordination skill in the last couple of weeks and now that we’ve been introduced to it we are going to develop it and make it better. We are going to have more fun activities and play more games that involve throwing, catching, sliding or rolling. But more than anything, we’re working hard and fair to stay strong, healthy and fit.
Coach Mati
Art
Hello Kirk Artist! Students have been taking on challenges to turn shapes and mistakes into something else from our read aloud of the Beautiful Oops. Kinder and 1st grade students have been creating shape compositions inspired by the artist Paul Klee. 2nd - 5th grade have been creating graffiti art and incorporating what we have learned with the Elements of Art in it. This week we will be starting up our district-wide Winter Card design contest and state-wide Rodeo Art Contest in classes. I look forward to seeing our masterpieces!
