Believe - Behave - Achieve!
Wow, it's been an awesome start having students and staff in classrooms these past eight days! The students have been doing an excellent job with everything being asked of them. When this ReStart began, we asked for more than just their compliance with all the new expectations, we also asked for their commitment to them. We wanted students to be equal partners and problem solvers on this journey, and they certainly delivered on this request. Of course challenges will continue to arise and adjustments will need to be made, but with their commitment and determination, we will rise above the adversity. Thank you for all the community support as well as we Rise Together Madeira Strong!

MHS Absence Practices & Policies
Students who are sick or displaying symptoms of illness should stay home. It is the parent’s responsibility to monitor symptoms and seek medical advice as needed.
When your student is sick or will be absent, here is what you should do and here is what you can expect:
1. Please call the school 891-8222 or 924-3777 as you normally would and report that your student is absent.
2. The school nurse may follow up and ask you a few additional questions so that we may have a better record of students who are out with illness and type of illness.
3. If a student has symptoms of COVID-19 that do not have a known cause, a parent should consult with their healthcare provider. A doctor’s note explaining the non-COVID diagnosis should be provided to the school upon return (strep, allergies, mono, pertussis, etc.), or the doctor may decide that COVID testing is warranted.
4. A student may return to school after 24 hours of being fever free with NO medications and have symptoms that are improving if they did not need to be tested for COVID-19 or if their test is negative. Students are NOT required to have a COVID-19 test to be able to return to school if it is not recommended by a healthcare provider.
5. If your student is absent and staying at home for illness or another reason, there will be no guaranteed opportunity or requirement for the student to Zoom into the classes on those days. High school students may contact their teachers or counselor to make special arrangements should absences continue for an extended period of time. Zooming into the classroom is intended for online learners and those students quarantined, not for families going on vacation or heading out of town. Zooming into classes when absent from the classroom does not remove the absence from a student’s attendance record.
6. If your doctor recommends testing for COVID-19, please know that your student will not be able to return to school until a negative test result is received and the result is provided in writing.
7. If a student has symptoms and there is a known exposure to COVID-19, the student will be considered a “probable case” and should remain home for at least 10 days since symptom onset and be fever free without medication for 24 hours and other symptoms have improved.

MHS/MMS New Assistant Principal
We are excited to welcome, Gretchen Bloomstrom, as our new Assistant Principal at both Madeira Middle School (MMS) and Madeira High School (MHS), for the 2020-2021 school year. You may have already seen communications referencing her as a point of contact for some school events and activities, so we wanted to share a little more background information about her with our school community.
Ms. Bloomstrom comes to Madeira City Schools with 11 years of educational experience.
Her professional journey includes teaching AP Language and Composition, Public Speaking, Creative Writing, and English 10 and 11 at Indian Hill High School. She served as the Coordinator of Extracurricular Activities at Milford High School, and as an Assistant Principal and Director of Teaching and Learning for the Three Rivers Local School District. She is a graduate of The Ohio State University (B.A. English, M. Ed. English Education) and Xavier University (Educational Administration Leadership - Principalship License and Superintendent License August 2020).
She officially began her role at Madeira on August 1st, and will be dividing her time between both MMS and MHS each week.
Please join me in welcoming Ms. Bloomstrom to Madeira!
MHS Back-to-School Night
Thank you for a great virtual Back-to-School Night! It went very well thanks to the excellent preparation and effort of every parent and teacher. Here is a recap of some of the positive feedback we received:
- Parents were able to see classroom transformations and understand procedures for safety.
- Parents liked viewing photos of the classroom.
- Parents enjoyed hearing about and previewing ways we will engage students and build connections / relationships.
- Most of all, parents felt it was an even more intimate way to get to know teachers.
- Parents appreciated the event running on time and not having to look for classrooms.
Thanks again to those that attended!
