Desperate Need of Spare Drivers

Many of our families have had the added pressure of not having buses run for the last few weeks. We appreciate your understanding is this, but also understand the frustration. Unfortunately, the only solution is to find more drivers. If you know of anyone who may be looking for some casual hours covering for our drivers or doing extracurricular and field trips, please send them to nesd.ca/careers and have them apply.

Contact NESD transportation at 1-888-884-0240 for more information or if you have any questions.

Daily Screening

Please use the following tool to screen your child, every morning.

Are you getting the Bear Blast via text?

STEM at PPCS

STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

I once heard a speaker say that we need to prepare our kids for jobs that don't yet exist. This seems like an exercise of the impossible, but t is our task as educators nonetheless.

Today, as I prepared lunches I was made aware of how fast the world has changed as I read a recipe from my phone, watched Netflix on my iPad, and dictated by grocery list to Siri. None of that even existed 10 years ago and much of it didn't exist 5 years ago. How can we hope to prepare our students to be competitive in a world that changes that fast. The answer is STEM. STEM provides students with experiences and skills that they can transfer into a rapidly changing and evolving world.

At PPCS we have been dabbling in STEM for a couple of years, but have greatly increased opportunities for students this year. As I highlighted in a previous Bear Blast, Mr. Riley has brought 3D printing and computer-aided design into our PAA classes. ost recently, Mr Mielke and Mrs. Irving have been trying a pilot robotics program with the grade 1s as part of their social studies and math programs. This was also highlighted in a previous Bear Blast, showing the grade 1s working with the Mouse Bots. Recently, they have been introduced to Edison Bot; a slightly more complex robot that introduces students to a simple computer programming language (scratch). We have been working on coordinates and how to provide instruction to Edison Bot to get him to move from point A to point B with accuracy. On Friday, we combined the 3D printing with what they had learned about robots, the grade 1s were given a demo of the 3D printers and even designed a small project. They had lots of great questions and were very interested in what the technology could do. Stay tuned for further adventures into STEM with a variety of grades in the coming weeks and months.

Grade 2/3 PE Park Tour

On Friday, the grade 2/3 PE class decided to take advantage of the nice day and tour the parks in town. We were able to get to Pacen's park and the park at QCP before the drizzly rain sent us back to school. We had a great time and learned a little bit about centripetal motion (merry-go-round). It was a great way to spend the class and visit some of our many green spaces. We hope to finish the tour soon.

Story Time with Mr. Mielke

In honor of May the 4th (Star Wars Day), Mr. Mielke will be holding another Story Time with Mr. Mielke live via Facebook.

PPCS Canoe Club Project

It has been said that we live in God's country. Many guests that visit our school comment on how lucky we are to live where we do and they are right. We live just a few kilometers away from beautiful lakes and we want to be able to utilize them more. Currently, the NESD has a set of canoes that are available to all schools, but with 20+ schools, securing them can occasionally be challenging and we find that we can't have them as often as we would like. For that reason, PPCS is developing a canoe club plan which would see us have our own set of canoes (and hopefully someday kayaks) and a trailer to transport them, that could be used by our students to explore our lakes, both local and beyond. We are currently looking into some grants that are available and hope to have the project off the ground in the very near future. If you are interested in more information or to support the project in any way, contact the school at 278 2288.

Caroline's Hot Lunch

Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions, we had to make the difficult decision to shut down our Bear Bites (hot lunch) program for now. We know that this was an inconvenience for many families. This is why we are so excited to let you know about a program that Caroline's restaurant is starting. Many of you may have read about it on Facebook. Please see below for more information.
