Message From Principal Engdall

Big picture

Greetings Shaw Montessori,

We are in the midst of one of our two biggest fundraisers of the year. If you have not yet, go to and register your student! There are two more spirit days before the run. Monday is ‘dress like a star’ and Tuesday is “vintage Fun Run tee shirt” day. Wednesday, we will hold our run on the field. The primary run will be held from 9-10, lower elementary from 10:15-11:15 and our upper elementary and middle school color run from 11:30-12:30. We would love to have you attend. We need plenty of help. Sign up to volunteer: if you can be here to help.

Our second large fundraiser is your tax credit donations! Tax credit donations help us provide for our children the incredible beauty that extends Montessori beyond the classroom walls. Field trips, sports teams, the field garden and the outdoor environment are not critical, but highly desirable. Without our tax credit donations, they will cease to exist. Please see attached power point. You may donate here: or in person in the school office. Thank you!

Thursday, September 29th is school picture day. Hopefully the upper elementary and middle school students will be able to scrub off that residue of color before their photographs!

Next Saturday, October 1st is parent workday in the garden from 8-12. Please see the garden update from Mr. Moench below for link. We hope to see you there! This is a great opportunity for you to get some of your volunteer hours while enjoying the gardens and meeting other parents/students in our community.

Wishing you the best,

Principal Engdall

Message From Nurse Rose

Big picture
Note from the Nurse: Parents, (this does not apply to Preschool or Kinder) we are working on a new Standing Order for Tylenol so at this time we do not have a doctor’s order to administer it, and it cannot be given to students. Ibuprofen will be given instead if it has been checked on the Emergency Health Card. If Ibuprofen has not been checked and your student needs a pain reliever, I will call to get permission. The other medication that the nurse’s office cannot dispense, due to lack of MD order, are cough drops. Please do not send cough drops with your student to school. They can be dropped off at the nurse and a Medication Authorization Form can be completed. Just a reminder for Preschool/Kinder, no medications can be dispensed unless brought in with student’s name to nurse’s office and a Medication Authorization Form is completed. Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns. Thanks! Rose RN

Message From Shaw PTA

Big picture

Hi Everyone! Here is all the info you need to know for the Fun Run and Color Run

We've got some early leaders in Ms. Stephanie's and Ms. Naomi's primary classes as well as Ms. Chan's upper elementary class. But let me tell you, I have seen huge come-from-behind class wins in the past years, so it truly is anyone's trophy to win. We're looking at you, Teacher Marisa. (Although Ms. Chan does NOT want to give it up!)

AND, we would like to give a special shout out to the Middle Schoolers -- who have historically not done very well at getting fun run pledges -- are doing AMAZINGLY WELL THIS YEAR! Woo Hoo middle school!!! Keep it up!

We will be taking donations until the beginning of Fall Break. So if someone pledges after the Fun Run, it will still count towards your total until Fall Break begins.

We have a state map that we are trying to fill in with donations from every state. Take a look at the map and see if you can get a donation from anyone in our blank states! We already have 3 countries represented as well: The US, The UK, and JAPAN (That's right! No Mexico or Canada... YET)

Any Fun Run participant who gets a pledge of $3 or more per lap will get a special little extra prize on Monday!

We also want to make sure that everyone is registered. Remember, each child who is registered for the Fun Run will receive a prize -- regardless of donations. Plus, the PTA has paid for each child to receive a Fun Run T-shirt!

logon to

Just a note on prizes: There are some logistics issues with some of the prizes that have not yet arrived. We will be getting those in (hopefully) this week. Also, if your child has earned a hammock or a tent, those are sent to the school once they are won, so they will be coming in later on. That just means more prizes for later!!!

We still need volunteers to help us both before and during the Fun Run on Wednesday. You can go to and click on the link to volunteer.

You are invited to come and cheer your child as they run around the track. (btw this does NOT count for volunteer hours)

Our Fun Run and Color Run are on Wednesday. MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD WEARS CLOSE-TOED RUNNING SHOES. They should also wear something they are comfortable in. If your teacher gave your child their shirt beforehand, make sure they are wearing their shirt.

If your student is in the color run, make sure they are wearing something that can get DIRTY!

It is also a good idea to send them with sunscreen on, a water bottle and even a hat.

Parent Work Day

Big picture

Do you know what Parent Work Day at Shaw Montessori is about? If you do not, we can tell you.

Parent Work Day is on Saturday, October 1. It is at the field garden from 8:00 - 12:00.

Our host will be Mr. Moench, the garden teacher. Bring a water bottle, and a snack.

We are doing this for the beautification of our campus so we as students have a nice garden and a nice campus space. Ms. Mitchell the teacher’s aide in Ms. Craig’s class said “Doing the garden brings people together and makes the garden look better.”

Have you noticed the wonderful trees at Shaw’s field? Shaw parents planted them at a Parent Work Day. They give us shade and fruit. They are also good for the environment.

So will you come to the Parent Work Day? We will appreciate it.

Garden Update

Big picture

We planted all our furrows! There are a few sprouts already thanks to the September rains we received this week. This week we planted, turnips, beets, carrots, marigolds, radishes, kale, lettuce, zinnias, spinach, peppers and cucumber. We can expect a lot more germination with the rain. The seeds respond well to the natural water cycle. They’ll take what they can get in this climate, but they sure do appreciate the desert rain.

Our aguas frescas market table was a huge success! We made $102.00 between afterschool pick-up and the PTA meeting. Thank you to everyone who supported our aguas frescas table. We will roll out another fundraiser next PTA meeting. I think we will try horchatas for that meeting. Stay tuned!

I created a survey about our garden program! Please share your feedback with me by completing the Google survey below. Just click the link:

I am asking for a classroom volunteer to purchase vermicomposting bins for their child’s classroom. Each class needs two totes. They both need to be the same size and can be anywhere from a 12 Gallon to a 27 Gallon. Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes:

Our parent workday is one week away! We will be excavating the perimeter of the field garden and planting some flowers. Please bring your shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them. ALSO, please bring a potted flower of your choice. We can transplant them at the end of the workday after we excavate and amend our area. The spectacular Mrs. Kutsko has created a sign-up portal for volunteers. You can register by clicking the link below:

Here’s my email in case you need to reach me:

Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.

If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.

Mr. Moench

P.S. THANK YOU Randi Frost for the Home Depot gift card!
