Barrett Team Adventures
January 23, 2017
Dear UMAC families,
As the month of February fast approaches, there has been a discussion regarding Valentine’s Day. We will be having a class party from 2:30-3:15. At that party, our students have the option to share valentines with our team. It is our expectations that if they choose to bring valentines, they must bring enough to share with our whole class. In our room, we have 24 students:) Along with their valentines to share, students have asked if they can bring in a decorated valentine box which sounds fun. However, if they would rather not bring in a box, we will have valentine bags for our students. Thank you in advance for the donations and classroom volunteers for this special event!
Sincerely,
Michelle Barrett

Throughout the week, our writers will diligently use their research to nominate a person of the year. Our writers chose an influential person from our shared reading texts we have read. Be sure to ask your writer who they chose and how this person was inspiring.
Shared Reading
This week in shared reading students will begin learning about traditional tales and myths. A traditional tale is a story that gets passed along through the years by word of mouth. A myth is one kind of traditional tale. Myths include: gods, goddesses, heroes and monsters. The first myth we will read together as a team is Hercules Quest, retold by Martina Melendez. As we read, students will answer the question, “What makes a character memorable?” Students will get exposure to another myth in guided reading group!
Science
Our scientists will be learning about force as we begin our new unit, Magnets and Electricity. Throughout this week, our students will have the opportunity to experiment with magnets while learning the interactions between magnets and objects.
