McClain Library Update
Award Season Edition
ALA Book Award Winners Announced
Early January is always an exciting time in "library land" as the annual book awards are announced by the American Library Association. (Think of it as the Oscars for book lovers.) This year was a fabulous year for Young Adult fiction - and I am really excited to share the winning titles with all of you. Come by the library and check out one of this year's winners or one from the past.
Printz Award Titles
by Laura Ruby
This year's winner of the Printz Award as Outstanding Book for Young Adults. The story mixes romance, fantasy, magic, and reality with powerful writing, strong characters and a spoonful of honey. It just shot to the top of my must read list!
by Ashley Hope Pérez
Printz Honor Book. This historical novel uses the facts of the 1937 New London school explosion (the worst school disaster in American history) as a backdrop for a riveting novel about segregation, love, family, and the forces that destroy people.
by Marcus Sedgwick
Printz Honor Book. Described as a Cloud Atlas for Young Adults, this is a deep and complex book. "Each of the characters in four mysterious linked stories embarks on a journey of discovery and survival; carried forward through the spiral of time, none will return to the same place."
Coretta Scott King Award
This award is given each year to an African American author for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions. Young Adult novels had a strong showing among the Coretta Scott King honor books this year.
by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely
"Two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension." This story is one straight from the front pages of the news.
Also by Jason Reynolds
"Just when seventeen-year-old Matt thinks he can’t handle one more piece of terrible news, he meets a girl who’s dealt with a lot more—and who just might be able to clue him in on how to rise up when life keeps knocking him down." Jason Reynolds novels feature down to Earth characters in a highly accessible style.
by Illysah Shabazz
This novel, co-written by one of Malcolm X's daughters, is a novelized account of the formative years of her father.
