Vlogging 101
Tips and Tricks to Help You Become an Expert!
Technology Required
- A camera or tablet - A quality digital camera (i.e. Canon Powershot) is the preferable option when filming a vlog but if you don't have access to a digital camera, your tablet or phone is the next best option. However, you will have to work a little harder with those devices to make sure the quality of your video is good.
- A microphone - Having a vlog that is difficult to hear or understand can be very frustrating for the viewer. The quality of your microphone will have significant impact on the audio of your vlog.
- Proper lighting - This does not mean that you have to spend a lot of money on expensive lighting. The natural light of day can be great when filming a vlog. However, you can experiment with lamps and other lighting elements in your home. You just want to make sure that it is flattering and that you look your best in the lighting that you choose.
- A tripod - If you are filming on your own and you want to remain stationary, a tripod may be good when filming but it is not necessary. Many vloggers vlog on the go and choose to hold the camera as they move around or explore different places.
- A laptop - A nice item to have for ease of editing but also not necessary. If you are using a tablet, many apps will allow you to edit directly within the app so if you don't have access to an expensive laptop, get creative on your tablet.
Things to Keep In Mind When Creating a Vlog - The Top 10
- Know your audience - You need to tailor your vlog specifically to the audience that you are producing it for. If your vlog is for teenagers, you need to ensure that they can relate to what you are saying and are connecting with your message.
- Practice, practice, practice - The best place to practice before you actually start filming is in front of the mirror. Do it over and over again and make sure your script is well written and well rehearsed. You want to feel confident when vlogging and if you look nervous or unsure, that will be communicated to your audience.
- Film test - This is your opportunity to experiment with lighting, sound, music and props. You may need to change your camera angles or the position of your microphone to ensure your vlog looks and sounds professional.
- Speak into the camera - Many first time vloggers are shy and avoid looking directly into the lens or at the camera. This is very awkward for the viewer. This needs to be practiced while the camera is still and while it is in motion.
- Film extra footage - Sometimes after you start editing, you may realize that some things that you thought would look great are not looking as you thought they would. Having extra footage gives you options to replace certain aspects of your vlog when necessary.
- Messing up will happen - Making mistakes when vlogging is bound to happen. The important thing is to keep going and know that you can edit out your mistakes after the fact. Don't let your errors throw you off track!
- Find your "Vlog Voice" - You may have to use a slightly different speaking voice when filming your vlog. Slowing your speech down and emphasizing your words will make it easier to hear what you are saying.
- Be yourself - Trying to be someone you are not or trying to create a new persona for your vlog will not be good and may come off as insincere, especially if you are not a great actor. Your personality should shine through when vlogging.
- Get your friends in on the action - This does not mean that your friends should have starring roles in your vlog. However, you should show your vlog to your friends and family for feedback. What you might think looks and sounds great, they may not.
- Have fun - Unless your vlog is covering serious issues, you should look like you are enjoying yourself and having fun. This will help you to connect with your audience and make your vlog more enjoyable to watch.
Vlog Platforms
1. YouTube - YouTube is great for vlogging as millions of people view and upload to YouTube daily. However, that is a pro and a con. There is the potential for lots of viewers but because there are so many vlogs on YouTube, people may not find yours in the crowd!
2. Vimeo - This is a great option for a location to post your vlog. It is not as busy as YouTube but that is a good thing. They also have a video school to help you improve your video.
3. Veoh - This is the platform to use if your video is crazy long! There are no size restrictions so if you think that movie making is in your future, try this platform.
Free Film Editing Software
2. iMovie - We love iMovie for editing videos! It's so easy and there are a lot of sound effects and filters that you can add to enhance your movie. It also allows you to upload to a variety of platforms which makes your vlog that much easier to share.
3. Adobe Creative Cloud Express - Another great, easy to use video editor. There are not as many bells and whistles as Windows Movie Maker or iMovie but if you want a basic, professional looking video, this is a great option. You can also share your video to Facebook or Twitter or share the link so others can view it.
4. VideoPad - This is an option for more advanced movie makers. It requires a little more effort and is not as easy to use as the other options but you are guaranteed to get a very polished final product.
