FHS Art Students participated in the 515 Juried Student Art Show
On March 9th, the 515 Art Gallery held a juried art show with Farwell and Clare Students.
Hello Dee,
Here is a recap from the 515 Gallery Student Juried Show. I'm so excited for these students!
On March 9th, 2019 fifteen Farwell High School students participated in a Juried Student Art Show at the 515 Gallery in Clare. The Student Juried Art Show featured fifteen students from Farwell, and twenty one students from Clare. We are excited to announce that FHS received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, along with two honorable mentions:
1st Place ($500) Brooke Baldwin - Artwork Titled “Wasteland”
2nd Place ($300) Harley Greer & Mackenzie Wolfgang -Artwork titled “No Need to Knock, I don’t Have a Door”
3rd Place ($200) Sara Bauer - Artwork titled “Love Yourself, Love Myself”
**Honorable Juror Mentions**
-Mackenzie Wolfgang - Artwork titled “Individuality”
-Emma Tideswell - Artwork titled “Curve Ahead”
The juror Patricia Block made the following comments about our student's work:
"I was very impressed by the thought, emotion, skill, imagination, and commitment that went into the making of these artworks. Not only was it apparent in the works themselves but also in the artist statements. The use of art vocabulary, personal narratives, and self awareness were very apparent. Some of the themes that appeared through the work show an ability in the artists to look beyond themselves and to communicate ideas and concerns in a broader social context. There were environmental concerns, re-imagining of history, a sense of place in the community, concerns for family and friends, coping with the challenges of high school, and the recognition that art can facilitate change."
Clay Forfinski Accepted into the United States Coast Guard Academy
Clay Forfinski, Farwell Alumni, was recently accepted into the The Coast Guard Academy which is ranked among the nation’s most elite undergraduate colleges. Out of approximately 3000 qualified applicants this year, the incoming class will be roughly 275 cadets. With a rigorous schedule, balanced between military customs and academics, the Academy gives cadets an opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science degree along with a guaranteed five years as a commissioned officer. The application process seeks out those with the greatest motivation and highest leadership potential. Over the course of four years, the Academy will capitalize on who you are on day one and turn you into someone capable of leading at a high level within the United States Coast Guard.
When Clay was asked about his acceptance, he replied, "I cannot express how appreciative I am of everyone who had a part in giving me this opportunity. Every portion of my application was as important as the next and all significantly contributed to me being on a path to achieving my goals. If I have taken anything from the past two years enlisted and the application process, it is to utilize and appreciate every single opportunity given to you."

Timberland Highlights
State assessment season is here and staff, as well as students, across Michigan high schools are preparing to take the SAT, PSAT, ACT Workkeys, and M-STEP on April 9th, 10th, and 11th. Mr. First is the Timberland state testing coordinator along with Mrs. Snear as back-up coordinator and they put in numerous hours in preparation for these state assessments. These scores can provide opportunities for students to do dual enrollment, apply for scholarships, and get accepted in colleges/universities. The results also provide data on whether schools and students are meeting state standards for proficiency levels. Lastly, they provide data for teachers to improve teaching and learning through curriculum and evaluations. These assessments are important for all stakeholders. Guardians can support their students with success by making sure they get a good night's sleep, eat well, and come to school prepared to do their best.
