Canby School District News
February 1, 2019
Dear Canby Families:
I am not being a jinx, but…so far no snow! It is never easy making that decision to delay or close school due to a blast of Winter. While many parts of the country are experiencing arctic temperatures, we are having a pretty good season. Keep your fingers crossed!
Today, we begin the second half of the school year. Our staff and students have been working hard to reach their mid-year goals and to master our curriculum standards. I appreciate all that you do to support your student in their academic pursuits.
We’re working on our district improvement plan which outlines our goals for the coming years. This plan aligns with our academic vision and at the heart of it is our vision: All Students. All Abilities. All Opportunities. We are working in tandem with the Oregon Department of Education on this plan by using a framework designed to improve student outcomes and to support their social/emotional wellbeing. We look forward to sharing the plan with our community once it is approved by ODE.
We are beginning the budget process for the 2019-20 school year. Our funding is dependent on the state legislature. For the 2019-21 biennium, Oregon Governor Kate Brown has asked the legislature to come up with a funding package to lower class sizes, lengthen the school year, fully-fund Measure 98, and provide preschool for more Oregon students. I am cautiously optimistic.
One of the goals in our Academic Vision is to increase family engagement. I’m holding a series of Coffee with the Superintendent meetings to hear directly from you. I want to know what questions or concerns you have as we head into the second half of the school year. How can we better partner to ensure the success of each student?
I’ll be meeting with parents on the following dates:
Knight Elementary - Monday, February 25, 2019, 5:00 pm, Library
Carus Elementary - Friday, March 1, 2019, 8:45 am, Library
Trost Elementary - Monday, March 4, 2019, 5:00 pm, Library
Ninety-One School - Friday, March 8, 2019, 8:45 am, Library
Please take a moment to RSVP to one of the four meetings. We’d like your feedback on the topics of interest so we set an agenda that is reflective of your needs and concerns. Please share your ideas here.
As always, you are welcome to contact me anytime to address any concerns specific to your student. I appreciate your partnership as we work to meet the needs of every learner so our students can reach their full potential.
Best,
Trip Goodall

GRADUATION RATES RELEASED
Newly-released data from the Oregon Department of Education shows 86.65% of Canby School District’s students graduated in four-years in 2018. This rate is a slight drop over the 2017 graduation rate of 87.77%. The district continually produces more graduates than the state average of 78.68%.
STUDENT ASSESSMENTS BEGINNING
Students in grades 3-8 and 11 will begin their Oregon State Assessments in the coming weeks. These assessments are a great way for us to make sure your student is on track. We can monitor student development through our assessment programs, which include ongoing measurement. Assessments also allow us to adjust our instruction to make sure we’re meeting the needs of every learner.
IMMUNIZATIONS AND EXCLUSION DAY
The current measles outbreak investigation in some nearby communities raises questions about how local county public health officials would handle a measles diagnosis in our district.
The Tri-County Public Health Office offers these points for consideration:
• Measles is highly contagious. Consequently a single case in a school or child care will prompt a detailed review of staff and student vaccination records to determine the risk of further spread.
• Keeping children in school/childcare is a priority, but measles is a serious disease. If an unvaccinated person is exposed to measles, they will not be allowed to go to school or child care during the time period when they could become sick, usually days 7-21 after exposure. This may be extended if there are further cases.
• People excluded from school or childcare after a measles exposure are asked to stay home to avoid exposing others in the community.
• Unvaccinated children, who get the measles shot within 72 hours of exposure, may be allowed back to school or care at the discretion of the local health department.
If you’re not sure whether you are immune to measles, you should contact your doctor’s office for confirmation.
Immunizations are required by state law for children and students in attendance at public schools and Head Start programs in Oregon. Children who are not up-to-date on their immunizations by February 20, 2019 will be excluded from school until their immunizations are up-to-date.
WINTER WEATHER
BUS ROUTES
If you’re experiencing delays or changes to your bus routes, Student Transportation of America can assist you. Please contact STA directly by calling 503-263-1007. Over the past few weeks, STA has experienced a shortage of drivers causing some route disruption. We have asked STA to develop stronger communication protocols so the district and parents receive timely notice when changes are necessary.
REUNIFICATION DRILL A SUCCESS
Canby High School conducted a Reunification Drill on January 17. In the event of a real emergency, we may be required to relocate all students to another area in preparation for reunifying with families. CHS students and staff responded exceptionally well, moving to the stadium and organizing in a calm and responsive manner. It only took 17 minutes from the time of alarm and evacuation to relocation and dismissal. Thank you to all students and staff for your focus throughout the drill.
CALLING ALL FUTURE CHEFS
Congratulations to the twelve district finalists in Sodexo’s annual Future Chefs competition. 59 elementary school students submitted healthy Mexican-inspired recipes and the 12
best were selected to participate in the districtwide finals event on March 15. Finalists will prepare and present their creations before being assessed on criteria including originality, taste, kid friendliness and use of healthy ingredients.
The winning student from each participating district will be considered for 40 regional finalist awards, and the selected regional finalists will vie to become one of five national finalists competing for the public’s vote. We know Canby can cook! In 2017, Ninety-One student Madi Bigej won the national contest.
IN APPRECIATION
In January, we recognized our seven School Board Members as part of School Board Appreciation Month. Each member received a book full of curated art created by district students.
School Board Members are volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to guiding policies that support all students and staff. We are grateful for our Board and their service.
