Tyngsborough Elementary School
Update: September 9, 2019
Dear TES Families,
Week two was just as amazing as our first week! Students have started to settle into their routine.
Important Message from Dr. Flanagan re: Culvert Project
Please accept this letter as notification that the Tyngsborough Elementary School Driveway will be under construction for the next few weeks. A longstanding culvert repair project will begin on Thursday, September 12th and will conclude by October 3rd. To facilitate this project, the traffic pattern at TES needs to be modified. Working with the Tyngsborough Police Department, Tyngsborough Highway Department, Dee Bus, and TES administration, we have developed a plan that creates as little disruption as possible to our normal school drop off and dismissal practices, and enables the construction crew to work as efficiently as possible.
Beginning Thursday, September 12th, the TES driveway from Westford Road will be ENTRANCE ONLY and the Access Road to Diamond will be EXIT ONLY twenty-four hours a day, through completion of the project. Additionally, due to a lack of sidewalk, the Access Road will be closed to pedestrian traffic until completion of the project.
Working with our Town Departments, we will ensure that proper staffing and signage is available as parent’s transition to the new traffic pattern. For your review, we have attached maps that outline ARRIVAL, MID-DAY and DISMISSAL procedures for TES. Thank you in advance for your flexibility as we tackle this much-needed project.

Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Flanagan
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Student Information Form
Recently, an email was sent in regards to completing the Student Information Form. The information form, accessible through the parent portal, is used to collect items such as family information, emergency contact data, and medical permissions. It is crucial that you complete this form as soon as possible. Failure to submit this form will affect your student’s ability to attend field trips, participate in after-school activities, and receive medications from the school nurse.
Let's Talk Math
Last week, Math researcher and author, Dr. Hilary Kreisberg visited Mrs. Bishop and Mrs. Russo's grade four class to discuss math. Dr. Kreisberg has been working on publishing a new mathematics book and have been working with the students for the past three years to test it out and gather data. The math product is called “Let’s Talk Math” and it is about discussions in math and the mathematical practices. During this recent visit, students discussed fractions, area, and perimeter. The students did a great job and impressed Dr. Kreisberg with their levels of discussion surrounding mathematics!

Message from our Health Office
We hope you had a wonderful summer! We are looking forward to helping your children have a happy and healthy school year. It has been an exciting and busy start to the school year already! To help everyone get off to a great start we have a few updates from the health office to share.
TPS Medication Policy- Our medication policy complies with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Codes and Regulations (105 CMR 210.000) and the recommendations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH).
If your child needs medication while at school, please fill out the Student Medication Administration Order Form and bring this to your child’s ’s physician for completion. This form is required for all prescription and over the counter medications to be administered at school. If your child's physician has his or her own form, it will be accepted as long as it provides all of the required information and written parental consent to administer is given. All medication needs to be stored in the health office under the direction of a registered nurse. Please refer to Massachusetts regulations and TPS medication policy.
Life Threatening Allergies, Asthma, Diabetes, and Seizures- Please send in action plans signed by the MD, parental consent forms and medications to the Health Office ASAP! Thank you! If you need a new form, they are located on our website, or you can contact the health office for a paper copy to be sent home.
Vaccinations- Prior to entering Preschool, Kindergarten, and 4th Grade: all students must provide a copy of a current physical (signed by an MD and dated within one year) and proof of immunization according to the Massachusetts School Immunization Requirements 2019-2020. It is best practice to send in a copy of your child’s current physical after each well visit or immunization.
Student Information Online Forms- The online form needs to be filled out for emergency contacts and parental/guardian permission to give Ooer the counter medications (children’s tylenol, motrin, benadryl, anti-itch creams (caladryl clear), tums. If this form is not filled out your child will not be able to participate in field trips or after school activities. Additionally the Health Office will not be able to administer any as needed medication to your child.
Health Screenings- Vision, hearing, body mass index (height and weight) and postural screening (scoliosis) are required by MDPH and will be performed throughout the school year. If you choose to refuse to have your child screened, a written parental note is required along with proof that your child has been evaluated by a physician for each screening refused. Mandated screening will most often be conducted during your student’s PE/wellness classes. https://www.mass.gov/lists/school-health-screening
Health Office Visits-If your child visits the health office you will receive a secure email from the health office that requires a password. The password is sent to your email with the first emailed visit. Please keep the password in a safe place. If you lose the password please email us and we will email the secure password to you. Please remember emailed visits are not emergent visits. Health Office visits that require attention a parent/guardian will be called by the end of the school day.
Additionally, please keep the health office notified of any changes in your child’s health status to include fractures, sprains, concussions, and new medications taken at home (so that we can be aware of potential side effects here at school) etc.
The Health Office recommends your child bring a change of clothes to keep in their locker in case of accidents or spills. It is also recommended that flip flop sandals be avoided as the children play outside on the playground daily and these sandals tend to pose a tripping risk for the children.
As always if you have any questions or concerns regarding the health and well being of your child, please contact the health office. We look forward to caring for your children.
Sincerely,
TES Heath Office
