Assignment and Retentions: It is that time of year for teachers to communicate to administration if you are considering assigning or retaining students. If you are considering assigning or retaining a student you should have started an SOS plan, put strategies in place, monitored the strategies and have involved parents. The SOS should include an academic goal and data. During the third quarter, please reach out to parents to make them aware of your continued concerns and document the conversation. A comment should also be added to the student Q3 report card. This should not be a surprise to parents or school administration. Please reference my previous email regarding the message that is in the student handbooks and board policy.
Please send me the name of any student you feel may need to be retained by January 21st. We will then have further discussion on the next steps for that child.
Fast Track: It may only be January but planning for Fast Track starts NOW! Please read the flyer below and the presentation (button below) to learn more about the needs of Fast Track and how it positively impacts so many of our students. We need volunteers and donations to make it happen. Monetary donations are most helpful. To fill a bag for each student is approximately $40. If you could, please sign up to volunteer, make a donation, or share this information with your churches, community groups or family members so we can make this coming Fast Track event a huge success again next school year.

Please look at the above data to see how your class compares to your colleagues. Please inform students that all students need to be reading every night in order for our school to make it to the million minute mark and receive a whole school party. It takes all of us. This also configures into their citizenship grade. If they are not doing their homework, they get a lower score on their citizenship grade. Get with your colleagues that are continuously getting their minutes met (Krug). See what they are doing to motivate their students.
I hope you enjoyed your time with Carolyn Gwynn as much as I did. I learned something new every day. It was a very exciting time! As Carolyn said, she initially taught us the "bare bones" of guided reading. Now that we are familiar with guided reading she was able to go more in depth with what we should be doing and seeing at the GR table. There was a lot of information to process. Please do not be overwhelmed. This is a learning curve. As Toni reiterated, we do not expect you to be perfect at the guided reading table. We do expect you to be learning and growing as you continue to learn and perfect your instruction at the victory table.
This weekend, I will be working on taking the notes I made each day this week and writing them up in a way that is helpful for each grade level. I will share these out on Monday via email. I will also send out a Google Form asking how I can further assist you in your GR journey and what questions you still have after this week's PD. I want you to feel comfortable enough to ask me to come into your room to assist in any way you need me. This is a no judgement zone. I am not here to judge but to help, support, and cheerlead. Lastly, this weekend, I will be taking your GR data entered into Scholastic and making a Google sheet that resembles the classroom profile sheet in the yellow book so that you have that information for your whole class in order to inform your GR and mini lesson decisions . This saves you time. You no longer have to fill in a paper/pencil classroom profile. I will do that digitally for you this weekend and get that to you by Tuesday. After I give you this profile sheet of your classroom, please contact me if you do not understand how to use this to plan your lessons. I would love to come and show you how to use this information to guide your lesson planning.
Tuesday and Wednesday PD Schedules. This may change and will be updated throughout the year.
You will hear from me about the new small group schedules starting next week. If you are especially worried about a student and want to make sure they are in a group please email me! I am forming them based on the parent's needs assessments, your assessments of last semester's group members, and what I've seen.
Supporting Students with the District Changes
I am thinking about what I can do to serve our students who may be anxious about the changes for next year. I will probably do classroom lessons once we have more information, I will also form small groups for the students who have a higher level of anxiety or we think may have a rough transition to the new structure. I just wanted you all to know that it is on my mind and I am making plans.
I am working on finding a folder that I can tape to my door so students can put counselor request forms or notes to me on my door. That should be up by the end of this week!
Conscious DisciplineI don't know about you, but I found myself out of practice with CD when I came back from break. One thing I've been trying to remind myself of trying to focus on what I want and not on what I don't want. Every time I hear myself say "don't", I try to start over or at least think about what I could have said differently.

FTCSC Hedgehog Focus
The Hedgehog Concept is based on an ancient Greek parable that states, "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." ... Hedgehogs, however, simplify the world and focus on a single, overarching vision, which they then achieve.
