Berner's Think Pink Event

by Shea Ringel

Think Pink Facts

Here are some fun facts about Think Pink! Think Pink is an event at which people show their support for people with breast cancer. In the United States, there are over 2.6 million people who have survived breast cancer. Additionally, 1 in 8 women in the United States are affected by breast cancer. Men can also get breast cancer. Approximately 2,190 men get breast cancer each year. Finally, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Think Pink at Berner

The Think Pink event is being carried out by the Chiefs Challenge club at Berner Middle School. The proceeds of this event will be given to Unqua Elementary School to support the Suzanne Scanio Memorial for a donation in her name to Babylon Breast Cancer which provides services to people with breast cancer. These services include shopping, cleaning, cooking, and driving patients to appointments. On October 29, Chiefs Challenge sold stickers to raise money to help people with breast cancer. The picture below is one of the stickers that was sold. Usually, the girls and boys soccer teams would host a bake sale during their season to raise money for Think Pink, but because of the current pandemic, the season has been postponed and so has the bake sale. There are also banners and signs around Berner Middle School supporting the Think Pink fundraisers.

Increase in Pet Adoption During the Pandemic

by Grace Hoffman

During the pandemic our whole country was shut down. Families were very bored and lonely, kids had no sports, no school, and could not hang out with friends. Parents could not go to work, see family members, go out to dinner, or travel anywhere. Despite all of this stress and craziness going on in the world, a certain animal started to bring out happiness in people and gave them hope and emotional support during these times.

During the pandemic the number of people who purchased or rescued a dog soared. Think about it most people may dislike the Covid-19 shutdown, but if you look at it from a different perspective it was a great time to spend time with family and maybe make new additions to your existing family. Personally, I know many people who adopted puppies during the Pandemic. It was a great time to get a dog because no one is going to work so your dog will not be lonely in the house. You are not traveling, so you don't have to leave your dog at home with a sitter, and you have plenty of time to train and get your dog used to your house and your family. I feel as though it was a great decision to purchase or rescue a dog during the pandemic.

Not only did a dog save your family from the struggles and mental stress from the pandemic. Your family saved a dog. This year there are more dogs finding homes, and fewer dogs left in shelters. About twenty-five percent of the people who foster a dog adopt them permanently. Usually, that number is ten percent. The New York shelter was seeing a major decrease in the number of dogs that were returned to the shelter, other shelters were seeing this decreasing pattern as well. “Among U.S. adults, five percent adopted a dog in a three month period. Four percent adopted a cat and four adopted other types of pets, especially reptiles and small Another repeating factor in the surge of pet adoption is that most families that adopted pets have kids who are under the age of 18, because of school closures, not being able to hang out with friends, and the pause in playing public sports created a boost of twelve percent among the families that adopted pets during the pandemic had children under the age of 18.

During the challenging times of the pandemic, people were really missing that unconditional love from family and friends. There are many positives to owning a dog. There are studies that show that pets provide companionship, reduce stress in their owners, improve levels of self-esteem and empathy, and reduce anxiety. As well as enhancing your mental health, dogs can improve your physical health as well. It is proven that dogs lower blood pressure and decrease obesity, because dogs are so energetic and active, they will help you improve your physical health and start to gain an active lifestyle. The last major point about how dogs greatly improve your health and lifestyle is that they help you gain responsibility and a routine. If you own a dog then you know that having a dog requires responsibility. You need to feed them, walk them, clean up after them, and giving lots of attention. In conclusion, the pandemic changed all of our lives in many ways, many people in the United States changed shelter animals’ lives during the Pandemic. So not only did your dog save you during the pandemic, you saved a dog.

Adopting a Rescue Dog

by Charlotte Focarazzo

“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever,” is a quote by Karen Davison. It explains that, if you adopt a dog, you’re giving them a better life, and they will be so grateful to have a safe and loving home.

Almost 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year, but only around 1.6 million dogs are adopted each year. All of these dogs deserve to have a nice family who will take good care of them, but not all of them will leave the shelter. This is a sad fact, but it’s true. However, if we think about the dogs that find their forever family, over time their owners gain their trust by spending a lot of time with them, and they grow a very strong bond with their dog!

Preparing to Bring your Dog Home

An important thing to do before deciding if you can adopt a rescue dog is to make sure you have the money, time, and patience to take care of them. Some rescue dogs are shy and nervous at first, so it may take anywhere from a week or a few months for them to warm up to you. If you know you and your family are ready, you can go to a few local shelters and meet dogs that are available for adoption.

Before adopting any pet, you have to buy what you need to take care of them. For your rescue dog, you’ll probably need to purchase a crate for the first month. It will give them a comforting place to go while they’re still getting used to their new home. You can put a blanket or dog bed inside of their crate so they’ll be more comfortable when they want to use it. Make sure it’s the appropriate size for your dog before you buy it. You’ll also need to buy a collar, leash, bowls for their food and water, dog food, treats and toys.

To prepare your house for your dog, you should make sure it is cleaned up and safe, with nothing that could be dangerous to your dog where they would be able to get to it. You can also set up their bed and food bowls somewhere in your living room, or an area in your house where your family spends a lot of time.

Your backyard should be fully fenced in. The fence should be high enough so your dog won’t be able to jump over, and it shouldn’t have any holes.

Do your research! Make sure you know everything about properly caring for your new pet, including foods that are harmful to them, so you can make sure to be careful when eating them.

Caring for your Rescue Dog

Dogs want to be on a routine. Make sure you feed them their breakfast and dinner at a consistent time every day, and they should always have clean and fresh water. You should also walk your dog 3-4 times a day. You can walk him or her more than that if you have time, especially if your family takes care of your dog with you.

Your dog will need to get exercise everyday to run around and the perfect way for them to run around would be spending time outside. While your dog is in your yard, you should supervise them, and as time goes on you can play with them by throwing around a ball, playing chase, or doing agility training if they’re comfortable with those activities, which they may not be at first. On average, your dog should get 30 minutes-2 hours of exercise everyday.

Your dog should always have toys to play with, and if you aren’t around, it shouldn’t be a toy with a squeaker. Instead, it should be something like this:

Practice simple training with your dog, for example, sitting and staying. Reward them with a treat. You can advance to more difficult tricks once they’ve mastered the easier ones. Practice everyday by telling them to sit before you give them their treat. Training will help your shy dog gain confidence!

Bonding with your Dog

During the first weeks and months after adopting your rescue dog, it’s important to form a bond with them and develop trust. In the beginning, it’s difficult to do this, but after spending more and more time with them, you’ll become very close with each other.

To help your dog warm up to their new environment, it’s important to also give them space, and let them have breaks with a bit of time to themselves. Let them explore your house and become familiar with their surroundings.

Teach your new dog their name. Reward them when they come to you if you use their name.

Practice walking your dog if they’re nervous. Take it slow and give them a treat after they’ve walked down a few houses.

If your dog is friendly with other dogs, you can socialize them with other dogs. If you don’t know anyone with a dog who is comfortable with other dogs, you can bring your dog to a local dog park and they’ll make new friends and have lots of fun. Remember to be careful and watch your dog while he or she is playing.

I hope your family will consider adopting a rescue dog! They’ll become your best friend and you’ll develop an incredible bond with them.

Getting a cat? Here is how to prepare!

by Gretchen Schweppe

Cats are great pets but if you adopt one you need to know how to do it and what supplies to get cats are easy to take care of though.

What to get for your new cat

When adopting a cat you will need two bowls; one for food and one for water.

You might want to get treats for your new cat too. Cats are nice but sometimes they don't realize that their claws hurt a lot so you definitely want to get nail clippers for them. If you are getting a cat with long hair you should definitely invest in getting a brush because I know my cats shed a lot so yours will too . You will need a few toys if you are adopting a kitten they are very hyper but older cats will not be as hyper. You are also going to need a scratching post or your cat will rip up a lot of things.

What to do when bringing your cat home

When adopting a cat if you have any other cats or a dog you might want to see if they get along before you get your new furry friend. You are going to need a room with a door that will not open and cats can't get through for the first week or two, that way they get used to your house rules and you don't lose them. In that room you will need a few toys, water, food and a scratching post.

What cat breed you will want to get and not want to get

If you don't like cats biting and scratching a little then you probably don't want a kitten that is how they would play. There are many different types of cats and they all behave differently so make sure you are getting the breed you like not the cutter kitten. Getting a kitten is a lot different then getting an adult cat. When you get an adult cat it will be more calm and less playful than a kitten. The most loving breed is probably a rag doll cat. If you don't want a cat that is very high maintenance you should not get these following breeds:

  • Manx

  • Sphynx

  • Munchkin

  • Peke-Faced Persian

  • Himalayan

Mary’s Story

by Vivienne West

This year, the holidays will be a little different. It’s just us. My mom, dad and little sister. At home. As Mary’s big sister, I felt strongly it was important for me to make these Holidays extra special for her, so I sat down at my desk and I wrote a story that I would read to her, that I hope would bring Mary some extra happiness this December. Maybe we’ll even start a yearly little sister tradition! The next day I snuggled with Mary and read her my story. It goes a little something like this...

“It was a few days before Christmas and the Wilson family was busy getting ready for the holidays. Everyone was gathered around the Christmas tree hanging whatever they could find out of the 6 million boxes scattered about the living room floor. “Make sure you hand me anything that is glass, so you don’t break it.” said Mrs. Wilson. “Can I hang the star?” Tommy asked. “Yes but be careful, here, Daddy will lift you up.” “There!” The star is now at the top of the tree, shining brighter than a shooting star. “Look! It’s snowing!” said Natalie. “Can we go out and play?” Tommy asked. “Yes, but put on your snowsuits. It’s very chilly out.” Tommy and Natalie zipped up their snowsuits, “Zipp!” Put on their hats, “Plop!” and slipped on their gloves “Wlapp!” “We’re ready!” Tommy and Natalie said in unison. While the kids were playing outside, Mr and Mrs. Wilson went upstairs to go wrap gifts. “Do you think the kids will like them?” Mrs. Wilson said to Mr. Wilson. “Nah, they’ll love them.”

On Christmas Eve, the Wilson family went to Grandma Molly’s house. She always answered the door with a bright smile and warm hugs. “Hi Grandma!” Tommy and Natalie exclaimed. “Hello there youngins! Come in, come in!” They immediately entered to the warm smell of the braised turkey and the peach cobbler waiting on the counter. The kids went to go play in the den with their cousins while Mr and Mrs. Wilson helped set the table. Soon, everyone was sitting down at the big oak table ready to eat some delicious food.

But even with this delicious food to share Natalie looked glum. Grandma couldn't believe her eyes, “Natalie, why are you frowning after such a great day?” “I’m sorry grandma, I appreciate all your hard work. It's just, well, I don't want to sound selfish, but for a while I’ve had on my mind that I felt our family should look into rescuing a puppy this Christmas. At school we had read so much recently about some really great puppies in the shelters because their owners weren't able to care for them, the article said sometimes it was just lack of training. That broke my heart, and with this Christmas just being us, it made me realize how important being loved is.”

That was enough for Mr and Mrs. Wilson to drive to their local shelter on Christmas morning and find a dog who needed their family and who would benefit from their love. They chose to name their snowy white puppy Maple.”

I’ll never forget the look on Mary’s face when I was done reading to her. She loved my story, I could sense it touched her heart. Just then, she climbed onto me and gave me a big lick.

Thanksgiving Madness

by Ava La Douceur

It all started when my mom decided to invite my dad's side of the family in addition to my mother's side. We normally just invite my mother's parents, and siblings and other people from her side. But this year she decided to invite everyone else in addition to “include everyone”. Which I don’t have a problem with, the more the merrier! Just not when it's going to be 15 people in all! That is going to be insane. Not to even mention the amount of food we’ll have to cook! That's where me and my sister came in. That's where we almost wrecked the whole Thanksgiving meal.

The last day of school before Thanksgiving break was a blur. The whole day was basically teachers giving us the easiest work possible if any at all. In Social Studies my teacher just put on a thanksgiving cartoon because it was “educational”. By educational it was a cartoon for five year olds on how Thanksgiving came about. Then in art the teacher just put on A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving the whole period and gave no further instructions. We spent a whole period watching a cartoon and doing nothing else! It was amazing. But still, I couldn’t wait to get home and get Thanksgiving plans ready. When the bell finally rang I rushed onto the bus and it was the longest twenty minutes of my life. Little did I know what I was in for when I got home and on Thanksgiving itself.

The second I got home I put my bag in my bedroom. My homework could wait until after Thanksgiving. I looked around my room to see if it was clean for Thanksgiving and to my surprise the only thing I needed to do was put my laundry away and clean my bed. I guess I’ve been getting better at keeping my room clean! Suddenly I heard my mom call my name. “Come down so we can talk about Thanksgiving cooking and activities!” She yelled at the top of her lungs. I sprinted down the stairs so I wouldn’t get in any trouble. When something as important as Thanksgiving is so close, we don’t take out time on anything besides Thanksgiving cooking. I was greeted by my parents and my sister sitting at the kitchen table.

“Glad you could make it” with annoyance in their voices as if they’d been waiting for me for two hours. “You called my name a minute ago and I came down instantly” I said in my defense. They all laughed at me and said it was fine even though I knew it wasn’t. The next hour we spent giving each other jobs on what to cook and do on Thanksgiving. My parents were doing the Turkey and more important dishes. While me and my sisters were assigned with the less important dishes, and doing tasks like last minute tidying the house before people arrive and setting the table. I knew I obviously wasn’t going to do the Turkey because my parents would NEVER trust me with that, but I was still relieved when I realized I really only needed to peel and chop vegetables and set the table when dinner came.

We ordered a pizza that night for dinner because we were not going to be doing any cooking when Thanksgiving was a whole day of cooking. After Dinner we went into the Living room and watched some tv until it got late. Then I said good night to everyone and went to bed because I didn’t want to be tired on a day like Thanksgiving. I slept through the night until when I woke up the next morning at around seven.

Waking up, the first thing I realized was how cold it was. I wrapped myself in my blankets and tried to stay warm. But of course that didn’t last long, because my dog jumped onto me and crushed me under his weight. I decided that it was a good time to get out of bed and go downstairs to see what I needed to do and watch the Thanksgiving Parade. I came downstairs to my dad on the couch and my mom was already in the kitchen freaking out over ingredients that she couldn’t find and not having enough time or space to cook. I laughed to myself at her actions and carried on to watch the Parade with my dad and sister.

The parade was good as usual except for some of the creepy floats. Some of them were creepy enough to give me nightmares and it's a Thanksgiving Parade! But it was amazing nevertheless. Once it was finished though, I knew we were going to start getting the cooking ready. By “cooking” I normally peel vegetables and help my sister with the mashed and sweet potatoes. So, when my mom yelled up to me “Come down so we can start cooking!” That's what I knew I was going to be doing. I washed my hands and tied my hair back so I could be prepared for cooking, then ran downstairs.

My mom told me my job first was to peel all the vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots. It was a lot, but I really enjoy peeling vegetables and find it almost satisfying to gradually see the skin come off, so I didn’t mind. I did it over the sink, and with only one cut and dropping the vegetables in the sink only a few times, I had finished my first Thanksgiving task. I gave my sister vegetables so she could do what she needed to do with them. (Since she has more cooking experience then me, she gets to actually cook and make dishes on her own, which I don’t find very fair.) But even though we were supposed to do the dishes together, she did most of the work due to her tendency to take control and I just watched and gave the potatoes an occasional mix. But I didn’t mind since I got to taste both the mashed and sweet potatoes at the end to see how they were. Everything went well up to there, that was before the guests started to arrive…

I had finished most of the cooking I needed to do so I was the one to let the guests in while the rest of my family continued cooking. It went perfectly fine until my grandma came. She had a cane and was very slow at walking so naturally, my dog saw the door being open for a long time as a chance to run outside. My dog has a problem with running outside when the door is open especially when he sees something, so when the door was open for so long he saw his chance to run out. I had to sprint after him and pick him up so he didn’t go in the street! My parents were too busy cooking so they didn’t notice that the dog had run out. But luckily I didn’t need their help. This was the very beginning of the worst to come.

After a little bit everyone had arrived so at that point I was just talking with people and refilling their drinks to be a good host. It turns out my sister and I didn’t even need to do any more helping in the kitchen because my parents were fine alone. So I could spend time hanging out with my cousins who I hadn’t seen in months. We were just talking and catching up on things since it had been so long since we had seen each other, when my mom called my name. “We’re going to eat soon so go put the Thanksgiving punch on the table!” Which in case you didn’t know, is just a big bowl of punch we make each year on Thanksgiving and is delicious, but very heavy and hard to carry. This was actually the first time I ever had to bring the punch over because I was never old enough. But I guess since I’m older they trusted me. So I went over and grabbed the punch to bring it to the dining room table.

It was going perfectly fine. I had everyone clear out of the way so I could get there without bumping into anyone, and I am normally not clumsy so I doubted I would drop it. But then suddenly, my dog came running towards me at full speed like a predator about to catch its prey and he jumped up onto me. I was so caught by surprise, and didn’t really realize what had happened until I looked down and saw a giant red stain on the carpet and an even bigger stain on my new white shirt I had bought just for Thanksgiving. Everyone was staring at me, my parents with utter anger and disappointment in their eyes. I sprinted over to my parents to see what to do.

They were not happy to say the least. After a good talking to and having to clean up the stain, we finally ate the food. I felt horrible until I took the first bite of food. It felt as if all my problems had melted away by the taste of food. The mashed potatoes were so smooth and creamy, the gravy added extra flavor to everything I put it on, and the Turkey. Oh the turkey was the best thing I had ever tasted. It was so flavorful and juicy. I saw how much my family members enjoyed the food too. Some more than me. I realized what I had done wasn’t as bad as I thought.

After everyone left that night I thought about what had happened that day. I had made mistakes, some really bad ones. But in the end, I still had my family. (Oh and the food too.) Everything was amazing in the end.

How Does Popcorn Pop?🍿

by Ava Chaikin

A delicious savory treat that many people all over the world love to enjoy! That makes a loud and distinct noise that provides its name. That looks like a fluffy cloud that you would see in the bright blue sky. That feels rigid and crunchy but placed on top of it is yellow butter that flows out of a warm bowl fresh out of the microwave like a clam river. What is it? Popcorn, of course, but how does popcorn pop?

The Brief History of Popcorn

Popcorn dates back thousands of years ago! The first kernels were found in New Mexico in a cave called the “Bat Cave.” Through a system of dating very old specimens called carbon dating, it has is believed that these kernels are from 5,600 years ago! They would just take corn also called maize and hold it near fire. It would pop and they would enjoy a delicious snack. These people didn’t have any scientific explanations as to why popcorn pops, so they used religion to explain it. There are different stories told in different tribes of people or parts of the world but here is one of them. Inside the kernels are spirits, when their houses would get hot they would get very angry. Once it got super hot, they would pop right out of their houses and into the air. Microwaveable popcorn was not created until the 1900.

Inside the Kernels!

Before you pop your popcorn they are kernels (figure 1.) They kind of have a tear drop shape. Each individual kernel has a very small drop of water within it, this drop of water is surrounded by a layer of starch also called the endosperm. You don’t see this as it is a kernel, but once it pops, you will see it on the exterior of each piece. This is what you cover with all of the sweet, savory, or salty treats you love! The outside of the kernel, also called a pericarp will eventually burst open and become the interior of the popcorn. The last important part of the popcorn kernel is the tip cap, this is the point part of the tear drop shape. Popcorn is a very complex thing! It has a ton of other parts of the kernel, but these are the main parts and they are the most important! Now that we know the kernel inside and out, we can finally understand why it pops!

It’s Time to Pop!

The water in the interior of the popcorn is the most important part of the entire kernel. As the popcorn is heated the water will begin to evaporate and turn into a gas called water vapor. As the heat continues to increase the water vapor expands. It will expand so much that it will force the kernel to burst. The tip cap is really helpful in this part as it is what the water vapor with burst through first. It is the weakest part of the kernel so it will take less heat and pressure for it to brake. That’s it! It is just a matter of expansion of water molecules and a bunch of pressure! So, after your popcorn is popped what could you do with it?

Here is a fun way to spice up your popcorn!

This is Mrs. Shehada’s Cinnamon Popcorn Recipe.

First preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a pan (baking sheet) with cooking spray. In a small bowl mix together ¼ cup of sugar, 1 table spoon of water, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ⅛ teaspoon of ginger. Place popped popcorn (preferably not buttered) on the greased pan. Then pour the cinnamon mixture over the popcorn and you can toss with your hands as to make sure each piece of popcorn is covered. Put this in the oven and back for about 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Here is a popcorn craft to put on your Christmas tree this year!

This is a rather traditional craft and super easy to do too! It even appeared on the first Christmas tree ever in Virginia. To do this you should pop popcorn that is not salted nor buttered and leave it out for about a day to become stale. Any freshly popped popcorn will probably brake while making the craft. Then take a needle and tie it to a piece of thread, string popcorn on to the tread. Be careful not to poke your fingers! Some people also like to put cranberries on there garlands, if you wish to do this make sure you wear clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting stained. Once you are done remove the needle and tie off the ends of the garland. This will look beautiful on any Christmas tree!

In summary…

I hope you learned something about popcorn today, it truly is so much more complex than it seems! From the history and stories from years ago, to the kernel, and recipes that will make it taste delicious. As always, thank you for popping in!

Getting Ready For Baseball

by Alex Ornstein

School hasn't been the same without sports. School sports are supposed to return in the spring and there’s many ways you can get yourself ready. The sport that I am most looking forward to is baseball. Here are some ways to prepare for the upcoming baseball season.

You should always be working on your catching skills. When the weather is nice, grab your mitt and head outside. You can have a catch with a parent or a friend, and have fun while improving your game. You also need to work on your swing this winter. You can go to the batting cage and send those baseballs flying. Speed is key to running the bases and catching those fly balls. Here are a few things you can do to increase your speed, not just for baseball but for all sports. You can run the track or run around the block. You can use a stopwatch and try to beat your time each lap. This will also help to increase your endurance. Running sprints will also help make you faster. You can make running more fun by racing against a friend. You also want to build your strength this winter. Some exercises you can do are planks, push ups, sit ups and squats. It’s a good idea to do your exercises in reps. You can start with 5 reps for each exercise. Lifting weights is also a great way to keep those muscles strong. Whether you play a sport or not, eating healthy will help keep you in shape. So lay off the candy and grab a piece of fruit instead. You should be eating some fruits and vegetables each day.

You should try to be as active as you can this winter. Spring is just around the corner. So don't be a couch potato this winter, get out there and practice!

The Basketball Hall of Fame

by Michael Cunnane

The Basketball Hall of Fame first opened in 1959 in Springfield, MA. It was built to display the history of the sport. Basketball was invented as a winter sport by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in a YMCA where he was a gym teacher.

Exhibits at the Basketball Hall of Fame

The first exhibit that you walk through is a detailed explanation of how and why the game was invented. It was first played in a YMCA gym mere miles away in Springfield. The original rules of the game are displayed. Some rules are very different from the rules today. Soccer balls were the first balls to be used and you had to pass the ball backwards, not forwards.

The next exhibit details the rise in popularity of the game from the 1930's. This was largely due to people like Ned Irish, a promoter who was given the Key to the City of New York, and George Mikan, who was basketball's first real ´superstar´. He was so good, the Fort Wayne Pistons had to play keepaway to stop him from scoring. This led to the shot clock.

Next comes the exhibit about integrating basketball. Chuck Cooper was the first black player in the NBA in 1950. Women also had similar problems. There was no professional league for women until the WNBA started in 1997, although Women's College Basketball had been played since the 1970´s.

The jersey and sneaker exhibit is next. And there's also a room where you can see every member of the Hall of Fame virtually. It is a timeline of every person to be inducted.

The final exhibit is currently being built. It is a memorial to Kobe Bryant, who passed away in February. It will be open next year and the content of the exhibit is currently being selected by the Bryant family.

In conclusion, basketball is a simple game. But it opened unseen doors for countless people. In other words, ”A ball and a basket. That's all you really need. But sometimes, in order to play the game, opportunity is the greatest factor of all."

Adrian’s Baseball Journey: Part 1

by Aidan Sherwin

The Fly Ball

Adrian had another game and his team had a one run lead in the bottom of the 9th with two outs and a runner on second. His whole team had already predicted the outcome. Adrian was playing right field as the batter stepped up to the plate. He had low expectations that the ball would be hit to him so he stood there with his eyes deep into his imagination.

Out of what seemed like nowhere, Adrian heard a loud crack of the bat and saw the ball soaring towards him. He knew that this play would determine the game’s results. He turned to stare at the runner on his way home and the batter rounding first. He needed to catch this ball.

Adrian shot his glove up at the ball and waited for it to drop right into his glove. It didn’t take long for him to realize that the ball had already gone over his head and was making its way to the ground. In panic, he ran to the ball with his glove in the air. When the ball was only a few feet off the ground, he dove. Whilst on the ground, he saw the ball bounce off of the turf field and start rolling towards the wall.

As Adrian got off of the ground, he heard his teammates shout “You suck!” and “You don’t belong on this team!” That one made Adrian want to cry. He lied on the floor with his eyes full of tears. He tried his best to keep them in his eyes. He heard the footsteps of his teammates and sat up and saw both runners on home plate celebrating with their team. He looked at his teammates who all had anger on their faces. They were not happy.

While sitting there, Adrian made the decision to run off the field. He ran straight for the dugout, grabbed his stuff and left. Within moments of his actions, Adrian’s dad quickly made his way over to him to talk about what had happened. The first thing he said to him was “What were you doing out there?” Adrian responded with a shrug. His dad then made the suggestion that practice would be a good idea. On the way home, he could not stop thinking about yet another terrible day he’d had.

Embracing Practice

Once they got home, Adrian’s dad told Adrian to go in the backyard with him and to bring his baseball bag. Adrian let out a big sigh but continued walking to the backyard. Once they arrived, his dad held a baseball and told him to grab his glove.

A few missed fly balls later, Adrian finally realized that he was not going to get any better at baseball if he chose not to practice. He then prepared for the next fly ball. He had a growth mindset this time. He hit the inside of his glove a few times, and caught the ball. “Ada boy,” his dad exclaimed. Adrian smiled and cheered himself on for the next fly ball.

After about forty-five minutes of practice, he rested for the day and pondered about the things he could accomplish. He looked forward to his next day of practice. He wanted to prove to his teammates that he was more than a piece of garbage on the field.

Confidence

The next game came rolling in and Adrian was confident. His teammates still held a grudge against him, but he ignored that. He knew that he’d improved and wanted to show that to them.

After the game, Adrian felt proud of himself. He had caught a fly ball in the 3rd and got a base hit to left field. He knew that his teammates didn’t view him the way they’d used to.

After weeks of practice, Adrian was nothing like his old self. Sure he wasn’t the best player on his team, but he vastly improved. On average he got one base hit per game and made most plays. His mindset has never been better.

High school Ball

Adrian was in high school now, and he made the baseball team. His enemies turned into friends and he kept practicing everyday. There were some games where he made bad plays, but those were just chances to improve.

One of his closest friends, Eli, was a great motivation and also on the baseball team. They usually practiced together and talked everyday. Every practice, the two would cheer each other on and pretend to be coaches. They found that this was a great way to stay motivated.

The Conquer of Arrogance

When their next game came around, the boys were really confident. They were even a little too confident. They were expecting to have another superior game. They had practiced all week and hoped that would pay off.

Adrian was up to bat first, followed by Eli. He stepped into the batter's box and took a rip at the ball. He missed. He took an even harder swing next time, and missed again. He knew he would crush the ball to right field the next pitch so he swung even harder. That was the third strike.

As Adrian walked back to the dugout, his teammates were giving him the “What were you doing out there?” stare. They knew that striking out every now and then was fine, but they noticed something off.

It was Eli’s turn to bat, and he knew he would slam the ball to the outfield. As the ball made its way to the batter’s box, he took a strong rip, and missed. “Ah c’mon,” he said to himself. He took another hard rip at the ball, and foul tipped it. He sighed a sigh of anger. He did not want to go out the same way Adrian did.

Eli called time, took some practice swings, and told himself to take it easy. He’d come to the conclusion that him and Adrian had been overswinging, and taking their eyes off the ball. He took some more practice swings, this time not too fast. He stepped into the batter’s box and this time knew exactly what to do.

As the ball was fired in, Eli remembered to not swing as hard, and to keep his eye on the ball. He swung, trying his best to keep his eye on the ball, he fouled it off along the first base line. He prepared himself for the next pitch, and slammed it to the shortstop. He played it on a hop and threw it right to the first baseman.

As soon as Eli made his way to the dugout, he sat right next to Adrian and they conversed about the problems they had faced. Eli quickly brought up the fact that they were swinging too hard and took their eyes off the ball. “Ohh,” said Adrian knowing that that was the problem. “We need to work on that.” “Yeah,” said Eli.

Next time Adrian was up to bat, he reminded himself to not make the same mistakes. But, his arrogance took over and he proceeded to take his eye off the ball. As the next pitch left the pitcher’s hand, Adrian felt prepared to slash it to the outfield. He swung so hard that he did a 180! This was not the type of Adrian that plays ball.

Detective Buster: Part 1

by Matthew Costello

Chapter 1: The Beginning

As I wake up and smell coffee and waffles, I remember that I have a new job today as a detective. I have been preparing for this job for the past three weeks by watching any and every detective show on T.V. I learned that they often wear brown and plaid coats, but I don’t have a brown and plaid coat. A brown one will work just as well. They also sometimes have coffee in their hands. Luckily, I live next door to a diner, so I know where I am going for breakfast. So I get my coat on, say adios to my dog, Peter, and head to the diner to get my breakfast and a cup of coffee.

Chapter 2: Mr. Sneak

After I have my breakfast, I walk down the street to my job. It takes me 15 minutes to get there, so about six blocks away. As I walk into The Detective Agency or TDA for short, I notice something is off. For some reason, I can’t pinpoint it exactly; it is just off. While I’m looking around clueless, a short guy named Mr. Sneak comes up to me and asks me questions. I say, “This is my first day here. Do you know what I should do or where I should go?” “Ah yes.” he says, “Follow me” I follow him to an office with my name on the outside by the door. After he leaves and goes back to his business, I look around my office. "I found why it feels off." I thought.

Chapter 3: Discovery

Some barbed wire! It has some rust on it. It was in a drawer, in the big one. “Who was last in this office, and why did they have some barbed wire?” I think about it“Unless they couldn’t find it, but how did they not find it?” I silently put it away, “Time for work.” I say to myself. I sit down in the office chair and turn on the computer. My job doesn’t require me to go out on mysteries. I get notes and clues from the detectives that go out on mysteries and piece the clues together. So I get ready for my first mystery and find another disturbing thing.

Nature’s Revenge

by Michael Mark

We should have seen it coming. All these years of slowly destroying the planet. We never thought mother nature would fight back. My name is John Smith. Whether you believe it or not, I'm from the future. I live in a world full of nightmares. Large scale disasters happen every day. Even though the sky’s bright, the world feels full of clouds. Crime is rampant, stores are robbed, and people are at war. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg (there are no more icebergs). Gas masks are required, electricity and wifi are unreliable, and insects the size of your palm run wild. Civil unrest sparks protests all around the world. Each day is worse than the last. The world seems like it’s straight from a Sci-Fi novel. I traveled back in time to give you advice: spend time thinking about all of the things you want to do in the future. Don’t take anything for granted. Be thankful for everything you have. Thank you for reading, and live life to its fullest potential.

Presidential Election

by John Tarpey

There have been many elections in U.S. history, but none compare to this one. This election took place during a worldwide pandemic (Coronavirus) that killed millions around the world and sent the U.S. into a 6 month quarantine.

Coronavirus had a huge impact on the election most importantly because it changed the way the election was set up. A normal election would feature in person voting, but due to the virus, things changed. Now, mail in voting was available and although this option for voting could potentially save lives and prevent many people from getting sick, people felt that there could be fraudulent action taking place. Allegedly, it is easy for the people handling the mail-in ballots to see who the person voted for, and if they aren’t in agreement with that person, they could get rid of the ballot.

This election is rumored to have had lots of fraud that took place. In the beginning of the election, Joe Biden, former vice president and democratic candidate sprung out to a sizable lead, while beginning as the early favorite to win, while current President Donald Trump caught up and also had the lead in many other states that were not finished yet. Biden took the lead in some of those states, and unofficially won the election. As of now, they are recounting ballots in specific states at Trump’s request because he feels that he was cheated out of the election. Many republicans think that is the case, and are in favor of a recount as well. Conservatives are also claiming that it is utterly ridiculous that just days after Biden was declared the winner, pharmaceutical companies announced that the vaccines they were working on for COVID were between 90-95 percent effective. President Trump thinks that the announcement was intentionally delayed until after the election because if it was released before, it could completely change everything.

Another thing that had a huge impact on the election was the police brutality and Black Lives Matter Movement that was taking place during quarantine. This turned everything into a frenzy. Peaceful protests turned into violent outrage and cities being looted and destroyed. Many people were in favor of defunding the police. It was wildness at our very own eyes. Violence isn’t the answer. Peacefulness is. This had a huge impact on the election because basically all of the protesters were in support of Joe Biden, and many athletes, actors, singers, and other celebrities would endorse him too. It got to the point where everything had become political - sports, reality shows, etc.

The outcome of this election has unofficially declared Joe Biden the winner. We shall see if this stands, but if it does, we all have to unite as a country, and respect the man who has been elected to be the Commander In-Chief of our country. We need to improve in many ways as a country, but in order to do so, everybody needs to be united and together!

Game Review: Among Us

by Gianna DiLucci

(Art by me! :D)

Have you ever played a murder mystery game before? Typically, one person is a murderer/traitor and you have to find that traitor among you. Add in some interactive tasks and good communication and detective skills, and you get the current gaming phenomenon known as Among Us.

Among Us is a game by a game studio called Innersloth that adds a bit of a twist on the usual murder mystery games. You and up to 9 other people are up in space, working on tasks to keep everything in top shape. However, there is an Imposter(s) onboard, and their goal is to kill and sabotage the crewmates to win the game. Between using strategic thinking and good communication skills between you and your crewmates and customizing your name and attire, Among Us is an amazing game that can truly entertain players and be fun for all gamers. This game is available for about $4.99 on steam and free on Android / iOS.

This game had only recently started to blow up in 2019-2020 compared to when it was released for the first time on June 15, 2018. As stated in the beginning, it was created by the game company Innersloth, which has also developed the very popular Henry Stickman series. The major reason Among had blown up at such a late time was because, as the designer Marcus Bromander believed, was that it did not have as good as marketing as it should’ve had. However, the Among Us team was determined to get this game going and finally released their first version on Steam. Since then, Among us has been rapidly gaining popularity and has become another big figure in the gaming community.

When I first played the game, I didn’t really have that much of an idea of what it was like since I only learned of it through my friends recommending the game to me. In the beginning, they do give you the option to learn the basics in a single person free-play area. Once I got the hang of it, I decided to enter my first public game. It went pretty well, and you could chat with people within the game. Everyone is generally nice, yet there's always that sliver of friendly competition when playing/chatting ;) . It may take a lot of getting used to at first, such as working the controls and voting systems or just remembering the layout of each map and what each sabotage does for the imposter and what crewmate tasks are visual (meaning others can see them as you complete it, proving your innocence as a crewmate). It's really quick and easy to pick up these skills, and you’ll be addicted to this game in no time.

Another thing people love to do is play using an online chatting app called Discord to talk to people in real-time voice chats as they play. This can also help become more social with others and feel more confident about playing with others, just make sure you have some good acting if you're an imposter! ;)

The Among us community is very large, and is still growing to this day! So in conclusion, Among Us is a great game that I would definitely recommend if you are a fan of skill/detective/murdermystery games. It is great for playing with friends or even just playing by yourself in your free time.If you download Among Us today and join the millions already playing, don't worry, you won’t regret it!

Animal Crossing - Should You Get It? Our Review

by Keira Cullinan and Colleen Overzat

Why you should buy Animal Crossing - New Horizons

Do you have a family member or close friend that is into gaming or has a Nintendo switch or a Nintendo switch lite? You should probably consider buying them Animal Crossing New Horizons! It is a really fun game and you should definitely try it out if you are into games like this or buy it for a friend you think would like it.

What is Animal Crossing?

Animal Crossing New Horizons was released on March 20th, 2020 at about $59.99, which is the one we are talking about. The game is a fun game where you first move to a deserted island and make friends along the way, also called villagers. Your day is based on real 24 hour time and seasons change just as the time zone you have picked. You also choose the name for your island! Colleen’s is Oceanview, and Keira’s is Stick. Get ready to fly away with adventure!

What happens when you start?

When you start the game, you start off at an airport, where Timmy and Tommy, cute little raccoon twins meet you. This is where you start setting up. They will ask things like to put in your name, your birthday (your villagers can celebrate!) Your time zone for it to be realistic in the 24 hour time, pick your island/river setup, and pick what your character looks like. Then, you fly over to the deserted island you will live on, meet your starter villagers and then take a quick look around! You’ll have a random fruit on some trees such as peaches, oranges, apples, cherries, pears and coconuts. And finally, when your finished, you get to pick out the name of your island a little bit later.

Villagers

Villagers are the talking animals that live with you on your island. There are many different species of animals you can get like elephants, cats, mice, squirrels, horses, leopards, rhinos, and so much more! The villagers move into your island, and after you get town hall, you can buy in real life stores such as Target, amiibo cards! You use these to get special villagers you want. But you can only have 10 villagers on your island at once, but when you realize you like a new villager, you can try to get one to move out to let them replace it. You can also give the villagers presents and they usually give you one back. Depending on the gender, there is a personality type for each villager. With four for each, for girls, there are sisterly, peppy, snooty, and normal, and for boys, there are cranky, lazy, jock, and smug.

Playing with friends

There are ways to play with friends in animal crossing, even though on your device it is a solo player game. You will need 2 devices that BOTH have animal crossing, On your Nintendo device, first you go to the dock with the airport, then go inside. Talk to him and say “I wanna fly!’’ or “I want visitors.” then if you aren't with them say “online play” and if you are say “local play” and then open the gate. Your friend should get a notification and sometimes will have to type in a code. Then they should arrive soon so get ready to fly!

What we rate Animal Crossing

Colleen - I think Animal Crossing is really fun and a nice game to play, I would rate it 4.5 stars since even though it has a few flaws, it is still fun. Also, I really think you should be able to do online play without an nintendo account, because there are some features I can’t do since I don’t have an nintendo account yet

Keira - I think animal crossing uses time (in a good way) and it is very enjoyable. It's good it doesn't need the internet so you can use it on long or short road trips. I would rate it, just as Colleen, 4.5 stars because sometimes my villagers won't talk to me and I just get stung by too many wasps.

Our Conclusion on Animal Crossing - New Horizons

In Animal Crossing - New Horizons, there is so much more to do than what we have covered, but it is so much fun either way, and you NEED to try it. Just try it, and if your parents say no, it’s ok! It shouldn’t take much begging because it's a family-friendly game, but if not, try it when you’re older!

Back to the Future Movies Review

by Colleen Overzat

*Spoiler alert

Back to the Future is a series of movies that is about Marty McFly and his friend, Emmett Lathrop Brown (Doc), which you’ve probably never heard of, because the first movie was released in 1985! You might think that since it was released 35 years ago (Original) , 31 years ago (Part ll), and 30 years ago (Part lll), that this movie would be terrible, but let me tell you, you're wrong! You're just wrong. This is the best 80’s-90’s movie in my opinion, and a Classic! There is even a video game based on it! Now, if you're still doubting me, just read this article and you will BEG for your parents to let you rent it to watch. (Also, by the way, if you decide the watch the movies after, when I watched these was months ago, maybe even a year, so if these aren’t accurate, just giving you a heads up and there is mild cursing so yeah just also a heads up about that)

The Original Back To The Future

The Original Back to the Future came out in 1985, where Marty McFly travels back to 1955 after his friend Doc is shot and killed by the Libyan Terrorists he stole the fuel for the time machine car from, accidentally going 88 mph, which started the car to time travel, after Doc had showed him a demonstration on the date, and since he set it to 1955, the car traveled to 1955. When Marty got there, the car traveled to behind where he lived, but the construction was still being done. After that, he was wandering through town, and saw his dad about to be hit by a car, which actually was the thing that made his parents meet, but went to go save his dad and he got hit by the car. After this, instead of his mom starting to like his dad, she liked him! Imagine how weird it would be to have your own mother be attracted to you without knowing your her future kid! After this, he meets Doc, but when he was 30 years younger, and he figures out he needs to wait a whole week to get to a lightning storm to happen to get the amount of power he needs to go back to 1985, and he spends the time trying to get his mom to stop liking him, and start liking her dad. But this keeps on backfiring, until and he almost faded into existence, since his parents almost never liked each other, and the space time continuum was almost ruined. When they finally got together though, the last thing he said to his high school parents was “If you ever have a kid, and they accidentally set the carpet on fire when they were 8, don't be too harsh on them, ok?” After he says this to his parents, he goes to go to Doc, since the town clock tower was about to be struck down by the storm, where Doc was harnessing the power. Marty wrote a note to give to Doc, about the night he was killed, but he said that it might harm what happens in the future, when Marty was just trying to save his life, and then ripped up the note. When he gets back to 1985, he sees when Doc gets shot, and as the people who shot him were driving away, he runs over to Doc. He was alive! Turns out he read the note and planned by wearing bulletproof body wear so he could not be harmed. After this, Marty goes to his house, where he figures out his mother never became an alcoholic, and his father stood up to his bully, who was attracted to his mom. This made his family a lot better than what it used to be, living in a beautiful house and his brother and sister both had really good jobs (They were older siblings). At the end of the movie, he is hanging out with his girlfriend, and Doc pulls up in the time machine in crazy , futuristic glasses. “Come on Marty, we have to go, Jennifer, you can come too.” “Why” “It’s your kids, they're in trouble!” “We have to go!” “To where?!” “Back. To the Future” This is the last dialogue in the movie, where Marty and his girlfriend, Jennifer, go into the time machine and blast off, on their way to 2015, which then the screen blacks out, with the signature text saying “The End”.

Back To The Future Part ll

The second movie, Back To The Future Part ll, came out in 1989, where it starts Marty learning from Doc that his kid was going to go to jail, so he had to go to 2015, since all lawyers and trials were apparently gone, so his son never got a fair trial. After he gets to 2015 with Doc, the time machine appears in an alleyway. He then walks around and looks at how life is when it was in 2015, it’s not as realistic as it actually is, because this was 1989, and they thought the world would be completely different than it actually turned out to be. He then goes to a diner, the same diner that was around when it was he first met his dad, and now he saw his son there. He couldn’t say anything, obviously, since if you were just hanging out at a diner, drinking a milkshake, and some dude that looked like you came up to you and was like “Hey, I’m your dad/mom.”, you would be sent to a mental institution. So he saw his dad’s bully’s grand kid start picking on his kid. After his kid and his dad’s bully’s grand kid both leave, he continues to walk around to go look places, and finds a shop. While he is browsing, he finds a book of every team who won competitions from 1950-ish to 2000. After this, he goes to look for his girlfriend, and finds him in his future house, where he was being fired. While this happened, the time machine was open, BIG MISTAKE! Biff, his dad’s bully, who was now like 75, stole the book, and time traveled to 1955, and gave the book to his teenage self. When he traveled back, Marty and Doc got the car, and went to 1985. IT WAS A MESS! There were bikers, Biff was rich, Biff was Marty’s stepdad for Pete’s sake! Biff had become rich of gambling using the book, and he also had killed Marty’s biological dad, who he bullied when he was a teen. After, Marty was trying to get the book from Biff, and he went to the top of Biff’s apartment building, where he almost got shot by the exact same gun Biff used to kill his dad. He falls of the apartment building, but the time machine DeLorean catches him! He has the book now, and they go destroy it, and everything works out. The end of it is when he goes to 1955, there is a lightning storm, the same one that made him time travel the previous movie, but it goes onto the car when Doc was still in it, making him travel to 1885. Then, a car pulls up, and a man steps out. “Are you Marty McFly?” “Yeah, why?” “We’ve had this letter dressed to you in our possession for almost 70 years.”. Marty then takes the letter it reads “Dear Marty, This is Doc, I’ve been living in 1885 for a couple of months now, and I am happy here. From my calculations, this letter would have arrived right after the time DeLorean disappeared with me in it. September, 1885 From, Doc”. Marty then goes to go look for the 1955 Doc, he finds him at the town hall, the seconds after he went back to 1985 in the 1st movie, where he says “Marty? But, you just went back to 1985!?” Doc then faints, they get back to Doc’s house, both pass out, and the movie ends on a cliffhanger.

Back to the Future lll

Back to the Future, Part lll. The movie starts off inside Doc’s house, both of them sleeping on chairs. Marty then wakes up, and he wakes up Doc. Then, they both go looking for the time machine, in hopes of sending Marty back to 1985. They find it in a cave, but Doc’s pet dog, Einstein, starts whimpering near a graveyard. Guess what’s there? DOC’S GRAVE!!! Marty goes over to see what’s wrong with him, and they see “Emmet Lathrop Brown, died September 1885.” After Doc is able to fix up the car, they head out to a diner to change in the bathroom. When Marty asks why, Doc tells him “It’s bad enough you’re wearing 1985 clothes in 1955, even more in 1885”. Doc had set up a display looked like Native Americans on horses. As Marty got into the time machine, Doc told him that it was only pretend, and he would just be in a valley when he arrived in 1885 to get the 1885 Doc not to die. Marty time travels, Doc was wrong, there was a huge tribe of Indians riding towards him! He fell in a cave with the time machine, and a bear almost attacked him. He ran away, and hit his head on a fence. He was unconscious for a while, and woke up to a woman saying it was alright and he was on McFly Farm now. On the words McFly farm, his eyes shot open and looked at the woman. It looked sort of like his mom if you had seen the other movies (Well, because it WAS the actor who played her also), and she said her name was Maggie McFly, and asked his name. He hesitated for a second, then replied “Clint Eastwood”. And she said “Thank goodness Seamus found you or you would be dead by now”, and Seamus turned out to be his great great grandfather. He then went into the other room of the log cabin, and saw his great grandfather. He then had dinner with his family 5 generations back, without them even knowing this was their great great grandson sitting in front of them, who they just think is a kid named Clint Eastwood who hit his head on the fence…..awkward! Well, probably at least for Marty, since he knew it was his great great grandparents and they didn’t. He then leaves, thanks them, and leaves to go look for Doc. On the way there, he sees Biff’s great great grandfather, who was actually had killed people before, who was actually called Mad Dog Tannen, which he hated with a burning passion. Well, he was walking threw the main road of the town, and ran into him, Marty was always kind of a smart mouth, so he talked rudely to Mad Dog, and what did he do? Tried to hang the kid. Marty almost choked to death (which the actor who played him, Micheal J. Fox, actually almost choked on set, but he was supposed to be playing somebody who was choking, so nobody really thought anything of it), but at the last moment, before Marty chokes to death, Doc comes in, and shoots the rope in half off his neck. Wasn’t really a SMART idea considering it’s a gun, and the bullet could’ve missed and SHOT Marty, but hey, Doc still freed him. Doc and him go back to his house, where he became a blacksmith. Marty then tells Doc he got shot to death by Mad Dog Tannen after he didn’t give him $100. Doc starts looking panicked and then tells him “Oh Marty, I really wish I had given him the $100, he’s gonna shoot me in 6 days!” He then is walking around grass near town with Doc trying to figure out what to do, they see a woman in a cart about to fall off a cliff. She was screaming and the cart was about 1 mile from falling off, and Doc and Marty ran toward her and saved her. Turns out she was Clara Clayton, who was the person the ravine was named after in the future, well, she was SUPPOSED TO. Turns out, yeah I know this is gruesome, but she was supposed to die, since after she fell and died, the ravine was named after her in her honor, as the Clayton Ravine. Well, after they save her, she tells them her name, and Marty pulled Doc aside, and tells him about the fact that this is a woman who was supposed to be dead that they just saved. Now, Doc is REALLY BIG on making sure the space time continuum is never messed up in every single movie, so you can only imagine how freaked out he was. They still decided it was ok to do nothing about it, but it kind of made them a little shaken up that they stopped a moment in history. After, Marty was walking to a little country music event in town, where he ran into Maggie and Seamus McFly (His Great Great Grandparents), they say hello, and they part ways. He also runs into Mad Dog again, and he and him get into a fight, and decide to settle it the day Marty is supposed to leave for 1985, at an hour later than when he was leaving. He goes back to Doc’s house, but Doc was at Clara’s house. He had actually started liking her, and they were dating. Wow. Imagine dating somebody who was supposed to die and you messed up big time by saving them and messing up part of the space time continuum, your biggest priority to time traveling. So technically Doc was dating his biggest rule being broken as a person. They were hanging out on a patch of grass in front of Clara’s house, looking at the stars, and discussing their favorite author, Jules Verne. Doc looked at Clara and started to tell her that he was actually from the future….BIG mistake. Clara started to get angry with Doc, yelling at him that she was tired of everybody thinking she was stupid since she was a woman. Wouldn’t blame her since this was before women's rights and everything. Well, they ended up making up. This led to when Doc told Marty he was deciding not to go back to 1985 with Marty because he was in love with Clara, and he couldn’t bare to leave her. The next night, which was the night before Marty was supposed to leave, Doc was out at a bar. He told the bartender “one round of the strongest thing ya got”. The bartender then gave him a shot glass full of some sort of booze. But instead of just drinking it, he spent the whole night telling some people nearby about the future and automobiles and everything else. Again, aren’t you supposed to have a strict rule about not telling anybody in the past about the future, Doc? Well, by the whole night, I meant to the morning, and Marty came into the bar and told Doc they needed to go because it was already 7:00 am, and he had to go before Mad Dog came to fight with him at 8:00 am. Doc decided to then, of all times, to take the shot, then fainted. Great. The only person who can help you in time travel, passed out. Well, the bartender tried to wake up Doc, and it worked! Oh wait, that was for literally 1 minute AT THE MOST. He fell asleep again. But great, here comes the Mad Dog, who came early to fight. Marty looked at Mad Dog and told him he was an hour early, to which Mad Dog replied “I like to do my killing before breakfast” Most people in town had left the shops on the street by now, waiting to watch what was going to happen. Marty then glanced over at a tombstone maker’s creations, and on the sign read Clint Eastwood, so now he’s going to die. Great. Just great. Doc’s fainted, and Marty’s about to die. He walks out to the center of the road, where Mad Dog is on the other side of the whole street. As he’s walking out, he calls to Mad Dog “Right here Tannen” Mad Dog then replies “Draw”, which to Marty says “No” He then drops his gun satchel while Mad Dog already has his gun out, which was followed by Marty saying to him “I thought we could settle this like men.”, to which Tannen replies “You thought wrong, dude.”, and shoots him square in the chest. Marty flies back, and hits the ground with an “Oof”. Laughing to himself, Mad Dog walks over to Marty’s body, lifeless, or so you think! When Mad Dog goes to shoot Marty to make sure he’s dead, Marty kicks the gun out of his hand, then stands up. Mad Dog looks at him for a split second, and tries to punch him in the gut, to which he recoils in pain, clutching his hand like it would help the pain. Marty looks at him, taking off his poncho, which revealed this big protective strong bulletproof metal under-shield. Mad Dog looks at him, still groaning from the pain, and Marty takes it off and whacks him with it, making Mad Dog fall to the ground. Dropping the protective wear, as Mad Dog gets up, right when he just got to standing, Marty punches him right in the jaw! Stumbling, right as Mad Dog faces him again, Marty punches him again, same thing, stumbling. This time after, he tries to strike back, but Marty hits him first, punching him for the third time, but this time, so far, he falls right into the tombstone that was supposed to be for him, breaking it in half! Marty walked over as he was getting up, Marty punched Mad Dog again, but this time, he fell straight into a wheelbarrow of manure (basically poop)! The whole town behind him is laughing at the man who had killed people before looking like a complete fool of himself. Then, the police came to arrest him, and when he’s asked if he has any words to say, he spits out some of the manure, and says “I. Hate. Manure.”. After this, Marty travels back to 1985, but it was right on a railroad track, so he has to jump out of the time machine, and it was destroyed. He then goes to find his girlfriend, and finds her, and shows her to the ruins of the car on the tracks. Jennifer (His girlfriend), looks at the ruins and says “Yeah there's not much left.” Marty looks at her and says “Doc’s not coming back”. He looks at a picture he had found with 1955 Doc about the 1885 Doc, with only half of it there, all ripped up, picking it up, not even looking at his girlfriend, but saying “Sure gonna miss him Jen.'' There is suddenly a noise and the railroad gates are closing, even though there isn’t a train in sight. All of a sudden, a time traveling TRAIN comes on the tracks after Jen and Marty are blown back, and Doc sticks his head out. Marty exclaims “DOC!”, and Doc exclaims “MARTY”. Marty starts to walk over to the train, and Doc folds down a part of the side of the train, and Clara comes over. Doc says, to Marty and Jen, “Meet the family!” “Clara you know,” and Clara says, “Hi Marty!”, and he holds up in a “hi” kind of way, and says “Ma’m”, and then Doc says to them “These are our boys!, Jules,” and shows this little boy who has to be 7 at the oldest, “and Verne.”, who looks to be about 4 or 5. They named their kids after their favorite author, kind of weird, but who am I to judge? Still feel bad for Verne though, who got the last name end of the stick. Doc says to them “Boys, these are Marty, and Jennifer”, and they both waved at Marty and Jen. Jen does a little wave, while Marty throws his arms out saying “Doc, I never thought I’d see you again!” “Had to come back for Einstein (Doc’s dog) anyway, and well, I didn’t want you to be worried about me.” Clara then hands Doc a passage, and he looks at Marty and says “Oh, and I brought you a souvenir!” Steps down a bit, and hands it to him. Marty walks up to him, takes it, and opens it up. It was the same picture that was half torn, but it was brand new and framed. Martys looks up at him and tells him “It’s great Doc, thanks”, and shakes his hand like they just met for some reason. Jennifer then says to Doc “Doctor Brown, I brought this note back from the future,” it was a note about Marty being fired from his job from the 2nd movie. “And now it’s erased.” Doc then replies “Of course it’s erased!”. Jennifer then asks “Then what does that mean?”. Doc says back to her “It means your future hasn’t been written yet! No one’s has! Your future is whatever you make it! So make it a good one, both of ya!” Marty and Jen look at each other and Marty tells Doc “We will Doc!”. Doc calls out “Stand back! Alright boys, buckle up!” The train then folds back in. As Doc is starting the machine, Marty asks “Hey Doc, where ya going next? Back to the Future?” “Nope. Already been there.” They both wave goodbye, and Doc starts steering the train time machine, and it flies off the tracks, turns around, zooms towards the camera, and the movie ends.

Conclusion

Back to the Future is a really fun movie that I watched when I was around 9, and I’m 11 now, so if I had mistakes, sorry about that. From what I remember, it was really good, suspenseful, and a just really fun movie to watch for a family that doesn’t mind cursing, since that appears a couple times in the movies since it wasn’t a gigantic rule in 1985-1990. I love this movie so much and I hope you decide to watch it! This was my favorite movie series of all the 80’s movies I’ve seen.

  1. First draw a stick figure (with no arms)

  2. Then, add freckles

  3. And make a circle around it

  4. On top of the circle, make 2 humps

  5. And one circle each inside it

  6. Make a big half circle around that

  7. And then make whatever style of dog ears you want!

How to draw a ghost

  2. Add ovals for the eyes

  3. And make a mouth however you’d like!

How to draw a snowman

  1. First make three circles. The top smallest, the middle larger, and the bottom largest.

  2. Add a smaller circle in each and color it in (if you want)

  4. Draw a mouth, eyes and a carrot nose

  5. And if you want… DECORATE!!!

The Best Fudge Brownies

by Madelyn Forquignon

Brownies are so delicious and amazing but sometimes packaged brownies aren’t as good as fresh homemade brownies! This recipe is perfect for any occasion and you can even decorate them with a thick icing. These brownies are thick and fudgey and have the right amount of crumble. So dig in on this recipe!

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and HOT

1 tablespoon cooking oil, (olive oil or coconut oil are fine)

1 1/8 cup superfine sugar, (caster sugar or white granulated sugar)*

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup all purpose (or plain) flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking oil spray or lined with parchment paper.

Combine hot melted butter, oil and sugar together in a medium-sized bowl. Whisk well for about a minute. Add the eggs and vanilla; beat until lighter in colour (another minute).

Sift in flour, cocoa powder and salt. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until JUST combined (do NOT over beat or it might affect the texture).

Pour batter into the pans, smoothing the top out evenly. Sometimes, I add chocolate chips or chopped up chocolate bars into shreds.(For a holiday twist, add peppermint chocolate/bark or crushed peppermint candy/candy canes on top)

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the centre of the brownies in the pan no longer jiggles and is just set to the touch (the brownies will keep baking in the hot pan out of the oven). If testing with a toothpick, the toothpick should come out dirty for fudge-textured brownies.

Remove and allow to cool to room temperature before slicing into 16 brownies.

Enjoy!

**Fun Fact! If you are using pasteurized eggs, don’t worry about the parts that are more fudgey because pasteurized eggs are scientifically proven to not have no traces of salmonella because scientists heat the egg to a specific temperature to kill the salmonella while not cooking the egg itself! Crazy right?**

Fall Pancakes

by Madelyn Forquignon

This recipe is perfect for a cool autumn day yields 12-16 pancakes and is pretty sweet, but with only one half cup of light brown sugar, it is fairly healthy too! I have used this recipe so many times and it always comes out delicious. If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice, you can make your own to use for this recipe and other future recipes. For the perfect pumpkin pie spice, mix ¼ tsp ginger, ¾ tsp nutmeg, and 1 ½ tbsp cinnamon! Based on my experience with this recipe, I prefer to use butter so it makes the outsides of the pancakes crispy but easy to keep from burning too much. Also, quickly whisk the sour cream so it doesn't stay as clumps when it gets cooked, and there’s no flavor impact, it just makes it fluffier and less packed and dense. I prefer to use red apples that are crisp, or even granny smith if you want! I hope you enjoy this delicious fall recipe!

Delicious Fall Pancakes - Makes 12-16 pancakes

INGREDIENTS

3 cups of all purpose flour

2 tbsp baking powder

½ cup brown sugar

2 tsp kosher salt

1 ½-2 tbsp pumpkin pie spice (your preference in taste)

1 ½ cups whole milk (2% or 1% is totally fine)

½ cup of sour cream or plain Greek yogurt

4 large eggs

2 ¼ tsp vanilla extract

3 medium apples, diced

2-3 tbsp of maple syrup

1 tsp of cinnamon

Butter or coconut/canola oil spray

DIRECTIONS

To make apple topping, first cut up apples and store on a cutting board or in a container. In a pan, add 2 tbsp maple syrup into the pan, or enough to coat the entire bottom. Add apples and cook while stirring every 20 seconds or so. After 1 minute, add cinnamon and cook while continuing to stir occasionally for another minute or so, until the apples are soft into the middle.

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. In a separate bowl, whisk milk and sour cream/yogurt, then add eggs one at a time, and once combined, add vanilla.

Slowly add liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients then slightly mix, then add in apples. Fold together until just combined.

Put the pan on the stove, heat to medium low heat, and use butter to grease it. Use a ladle and fill it halfway with batter and pour on a pan in circles spread 1-2 inches apart.

Cook for 1 ½-2 minutes on medium low heat until little bubbles show on the surface. Flip pancake and cook about 45 seconds on the other side, or until golden brown on each side.

Keep making more pancakes until batter until the bowl is empty and then serve or put in an airtight container.

Enjoy!
