One By One

They marched in one by one

They came like a mammoth stampede

Thousands poured in each single day

The captain in the lead.

Twenty-thousand fallen

At the hands of good Uncle Sam

Ordered to kill all over ten

And very scared I am.

They came with gun and flame

Our small amount of hope was lost

Crops and families all killed off

All at a timely cost.

Why them? Why us? Why here?

The falling tears were far from done

The flames were thick, the shells heavy

Each life lost one by one.
