Reading
5D and 5B continue to work on their literacy skills with Literature Discussion Groups and RACE strategies. Students worked very hard this past trimester and I have noticed progress in their writing and reading as they are citing evidence to support their thinking as they respond in writing to their reading. We are working on increasing our knowledge regarding Greek and Latin roots. The 5th graders are learning the origins of many of the words we use today. It has been fun to watch when the kids make the connections to the words they use to the English language.
In Mrs. Carlson’s class, 5th Grade is starting Unit 6 in reading focusing on the Civil Rights Movement and influential leaders from America and across the world. The unit focuses on the essential question - What lessons can be learned in the face of tragedy? Also, students have been focusing on improving their listening, speaking, and writing skills through literature discussion groups. Students have been posting their thoughts in Padlet, have them share their Padlet with you.
Math Workshop
The fifth graders have been developing their skills with adding and subtracting fractions with the Fosnot Problem Solving units. They have learned about common denominators and how to represent their thinking on number lines and double number lines.
