Differentiated Instruction What is it really? How does it help build student agency and support the ALP Process?
We will discuss this video during our Data Progress Monitoring Meetings on November 29, December 3, and December 6. This time frame gives you time to watch the 4:27 video before our meetings. If you happen to watch it sooner please share how you and your scholars have experienced success by trying a few strategies noted in the short video. Thanks.
Consistency
I want to share that consistency assists the school with sending the same message to our community. We have polices that have been in place for a few years to essentially protect you as a classroom leader. I have captured a few things that have happened in the last week.
- Request for work when a scholar has missed school. We do not provide work to the scholar until their return to school and they are given a timeline to complete the work. This includes an illness, a general absence, or a trip out of the country etc. The only scholars that are given work in advance is the scholar that is on home/hospital teaching with instruction being delivered by a certified teacher hired by FCPS.
- Scales or information to a doctor. It has been our policy at CES to mail or fax scales or information to the doctor to protect our classroom leaders. There have been occasions where parents have changed marks or have disputes with the staff member for giving factual information based on the form. Staff should not feel limited or intimidated in answering questions from the doctor to help the scholar. We will continue this practice until further notice.
- Homework: I have been getting calls from parents sharing that their neighbor's scholar has been getting homework for math or ELA. As we have shared our homework is limited to math facts, and reading. If you are doing more than our homework practice a conversation should be scheduled with administration and your team to discuss what you are doing for homework. We are open to having differentiated homework for some scholars that you feel need more of challenge. I do want to caution that you should not be assigning the same enrichment for all scholars .
I do again want to stress consistency so that we don't have the hero and zero complex for our classroom leaders. Our message to parents will be consistent through the grade levels and our school as a whole. It is very embarrassing and uncomfortable to get calls and emails because some staff choose not to follow CES or FCPS policies. We understand that you may not agree with every CES or FCPS policy but it is our position to support the policies to promote that we are a collaborative and consistent team.
