GCS welcomes new director of community health
Malia Melvin has joined the Student Support Services staff as the Director of Community Health. This is a new grant funded position supported by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the North Carolina Division of Public Health. This position is responsible for supporting and creating linkages among existing school and community organizations, agencies, and partnerships to enhance the capacity within schools to promote and create opportunities for physical activity, quality physical education, supportive nutrition environments, and management of chronic health conditions. In addition, this position will gather, analyze and report empirical health data to assess the health needs of Gaston County Schools. This position will also be responsible for professional development supporting North Carolina Statutes regarding health education, physical activity, and nutrition and will observe and inform educators to ensure instruction and community programs are aligned with North Carolina health goals. We are happy to welcome her to our team!
