Middle School Expansion
A true middle school supports the academic, developmental, and social emotional growth of the whole child. Bringing together students in grades 6-8 will afford Westwood Regional School District students a complete program and strong foundation for a successful high school experience and future.
Health Office
Dear Brookside Families,
Welcome back to the school season! I look forward to spending time with your children, seeing returning students and getting to know all new students. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time regarding any health concerns. My contact information is listed below. Here is some information about sending children to school or keeping them home if they are sick. In addition, I am providing information about medications in school.
Is My Child Too Sick To Go To School
Many parents may have a hard time deciding if their children are well enough to go to school. Making the right decision may not be as tough as you might think. There is only one question to ask yourself, “Can your child still participate in school activities?”.
Minor complaints or symptoms of sore throat, cough, or congestion doesn’t mean a child can't be active in school. If your child hasn't slowed down at home, chances are he/she is well enough for the classroom. On the other hand, if your child has been up all night with a cough and is having a hard time waking up in the morning, then it is a good idea for your child to rest and remain home (http://kidshealth.org/en/parents/too-sick.html).
According to the Westwood Regional District K-12 Medical Handbook, students should remain home if they have any of the following symptoms :
Excessive runny nose, coughing, or sneezing
Fever – students may return to school after being fever free for at least 24 hours without fever reducing medications.(i.e. Advil, Motrin, or Tylenol)
Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea
Skin rashes of a questionable or unknown origin
Sores on the skin, especially if moist, draining, or encrusted
Contagious or communicable diseases (i.e. Strep Throat, Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Fifth’s Disease, etc.). Your child must return with a doctor’s certificate stating clearance and date to return to school.
The WWRSD K-12 Medical Handbook is located on the district’s website under Health portal or by clicking here. Please call the Brookside absentee line at 201-664-9000, ext.1 to report your child’s absence. Please include your child’s name, grade, and reason for his/her absence.
Medication In School
In compliance with the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services and Westwood Regional School District’s Board of Education policy:
Students requiring medication during school hours must provide the following:
A written statement from the prescribing physician identifying the name, dosage, frequency and purpose of the medication as well as written permission from the parent/guardian for the administration of the medication.
Students may be approved to self-administer specific medication in certain life-threatening conditions, such as Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Written permission from the physician and parent must be obtained.
Prescription medication must be brought to the Health Office in the original container with the pharmacist's label, the prescription number, student's name, dose to be given, and physician's name.
Over-the-counter-medications adhere to the same requirements as prescription medications (as stated above) and must be provided in their original packaging.
Cough drops, provided by the parent, may be used in school when accompanied by the written authorization of the parent/guardian and must be kept in the Health Office.
** Parent/Guardian is responsible for the transport of any medication to the school nurse.
Students are not permitted to carry or take any medication without permission.
This information may be found in the WWRSD K-12 District Medical Handbook.
If you have any questions, please contact me. Remember, you know your kids best and when they are able to get through the day and when they are not. Thank you for your cooperation and I hope everyone has a wonderful school year.
Best Regards,
