Hello Shorewood Families and Friends,

A very happy Hispanic Heritage Month to everyone! Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15th-October 15th) was started to mark the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Throughout these weeks, we are celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of people from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. We have lessons and resources being used throughout our classrooms and a beautiful collection of artifacts and items in our "cross-hall" display case.

Now that the school year is up and running, we are also starting to plan some events and have important supports and resources to pass along. Please see the important info included below!

In partnership,

Anne Gillespie

Principal

From our School Nurse: At Home Rapid Testing

Negative home rapid tests are now accepted to return to school. Do you need home rapid tests? Insurance companies will cover 8 home rapid tests per member per month. This is usually as easy as presenting your insurance card to your local pharmacy.

The WI Dept of Health is also mailing, FREE, rapid, at-home test kits. Order your free tests from www.sayyescovidhometest.org.

The Health Office will also have a limited availability of home rapid antigen tests to give out, please reach out if you are in need.

Please continue to fill out the screener if your child has symptoms of Covid-19, has tested positive or is a close contact to someone that has tested positive. You will be emailed instructions on next steps and if testing is required before returning to school.

Our Shorewood ACL testing site is open most school days from 8-11AM, the one time registration process is explained here. Please call the ACL staff at 608-204-1225 when you are outside and ready to be tested.

Speak Out, Speak Up!

Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety has created a new platform called Speak Up, Speak Out! Its purpose is to have a safe and easy method for students to submit a concern they have about bullying, drug use, self-harm, threats on social media, or any other safety issue, whether at home, in school, or out in the community when they do not feel comfortable speaking with a trusted adult. The target audience for this platform is 5th-12th graders. Therefore, we will share the info below with our 5th graders but also want to make all of our families aware:

There are three easy ways to submit a confidential tip:

- Go to speakup.widog.gov

- Call 1-800-MY-SUSO-1

- Download the Speak Up, Speak Out app for Android or iOS.

The tip line is staffed 24/7 by trained staff who will work with our school to get help to you or someone who is hurting, struggling, or in danger.

You can help break the code of silence. Speak up and speak out when you have a concern.

Internet Service Assistance

We all know it's harder for students to succeed at school without reliable internet at home. Students need it to complete their homework and access resources critical to their development. Unfortunately, many families can't afford internet service. But there's good news—a new government benefit, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), provides eligible households with a discount on internet services and devices.

Help spread the word with families in your classroom and community:

  • Share www.GetMyInternet.org with families at your school. (Anyone who's eligible for free and reduced-price lunch qualifies.)
  • Need a low-tech option? Print this ACP flier and distribute it in your community. It's available in English and Spanish.
As one of the nation's leading organizations helping teachers, students, and families thrive in the digital age, Common Sense Education is committed to supporting the ACP so that every child and family has access to vital internet services at home.

Thank you for all that you do, and here's to a great school year!
