What's Happening in PBS?
Week of 1/26-1/30
To start our week in PBS, we will be finishing up our station lab from Friday. The students have one more station to visit that either entails viewing sickle cells under a microscope, running a hematocrit test or examining the basics of sickle cell anemia. I will also be handing back their Unit 2 test and talking about some of the test questions.
On Tuesday, we will be starting our discussion of Anna's sickle cell disease and what it was like to live with such a disease. We will be reading excerpts from her diaries and the kids will be creating their own diary entries for some other fictitious kids who have been diagnosed with the disease and are undergoing various treatment methods. This activity will take us through Thursday.
To finish out the week on Friday, we will recap all the pertinent information they needed to gather from the activities and update our evidence board.
Last week, we had students present over innovations that would help a diabetic and the kids voted on the top 3 presentations of their class and then I chose the top 1 from there. Below are the links to the videos...if you have about 5 minutes to spare and would like to help us vote on the top video from all of our classes - just reply to the email with your favorite hour. Voting stops Tuesday (1/27) night. We appreciate your vote!

As for HOSA this week....
- Our first visit to St. Mary's is Monday (1/26). I have 1 spot left open, remember that the kids have to have evidence of the flu shot this flu season to attend. I have had quite a few kids mention that they would love to go, but they haven't gotten the shot. This rule only applies until March...from April - Aug, they can attend without getting the flu shot! I have updated the sign up sheets to reflect this. Kids can sign up here: http://bit.ly/1xUILyA If they have record of the flu shot, they can sign up for multiple days (jan/feb or mar) but if not - please limit the sign ups to only one day please). I have also added the summer dates, I want to be consistent with St. Mary's so that they can rely on us to be there - so we will sign the students' PD sheet expecting the kids to show in the summer if they sign up for that date and be in contact with them over the summer (via the email they provide) to make sure they follow through to the commitment they make to attend and volunteer. I have also had kids ask if the hours would count towards any volunteer hours they need and I would have no problem signing off on any paperwork they have to document their attendance and help.
- We have a HOSA State meeting this friday after school in my room - this is only for kids who have told me they are competing at State in March.
- We have our winning design for the HOSA Tee Shirts (see below)! I am currently getting quotes on prices and will hopefully have the order forms to the students this week sometime. (the shirt will be the dark gray color)
- To ensure your kids get the first chance to sign up for events - please make sure they are signed up for the Remind Alerts. They can text the number 81010 and in the message put @BSFCHOSA to sign up.
Let me know if you have any questions,
