2019 Summer Hours
quote of the week
FSA's High School History Bowl Team Competes at the National Championships in Washington D.C.
Aubrey L., Andrew K., and Weston B. competed at the National High School History Bowl National Championships on April 26-28, 2019. They placed fifth in the afternoon JV Division! Aubrey L. and Weston B. competed in the National History Bee and Weston B. also competed in the National Geography Bee. Weston B. qualified to attend the 2020 International History Olympiad and 2020 International Geography Bee World Championships, which will be held in July 2020 on a week-long Caribbean cruise.
Not only are these students intense competitors, but they are also passionate travelers. These students watched a play at Ford's Theatre and visited the accompanying museums. They stopped by the National Archives Museum to view the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence and other significant documents. They also visited the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Memorial and multiple National Smithsonian Museums including the Air and Space Museum and Natural History Museum. In fact, these students tired out their parents and coach so dramatically that it has taken a few months to recover from this trip; Thus, the reason the reporting about this competition was stalled.
Coach Kelley Rodgers added, "These students brought so much energy and a new level of competition to our History Academic Team this year. We had such a great time each week enjoying being history geeks together. I was so proud to accompany them to the National Championship Tournament."
If students are interested in joining, please look for upcoming details about the 2019-2020 History Bowl Team.
Way to go Coach Rodgers and students!

IMMUNIZATIONS REQUIREMENTS & IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM NURSE AMY
A Message From Nurse Amy
This is to remind you of the importance of getting your son or daughter vaccinated before they go back to school this fall. Vaccines are the best way you can protect your child from a number of serious diseases, including meningococcal disease, and cancers caused by HPV, and whooping cough.
As you are making your back-to-school checklist for your preteen, I encourage you to make sure your sons and daughters get all the vaccines that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends for them at ages 11 and 12.
The State of Georgia requires the Meningococcal (MCV4), and a Tdap (booster) vaccines be done for school entry; to learn more about state immunization requirements, go to: www.immunize.org/laws.
Schedule an appointment today for your child to receive all of the vaccines they need for the best protection. CDC, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the National Association for School Nurses all agree that your preteen needs the following vaccines:
Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) protects against some of the bacteria that cause meningococcal disease and meningitis. While not very common, these are very serious illnesses and death can occur in as little as 48 hours. Your child will need a booster shot at age 16 to continue providing protection into the late teens/early 20’s.
HPV vaccine protects against the infections that can cause HPV cancer. HPV infection is very common and causes more than 31,000 cases of cancer each year in the Unites States; that’s one case of cancer diagnosed every 17 minutes. Both boys and girls should complete the HPV vaccine series before age 13. Preteens need two doses of HPV vaccine, given six to twelve months apart. If you wait, your child may need three doses over six months.
One dose of Tdap vaccine as a booster is for continued protection against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). This vaccine keeps preteens healthy and prevents spread of pertussis to babies who are too young to be protected by vaccination.
Preteens and teens should also get the flu vaccine every year, ideally by the end of October if possible.
The State of Georgia requires the Meningococcal (MCV4), and a Tdap (booster) vaccines be done for school entry; to learn more about state immunization requirements, go to: www.immunize.org/laws.
To learn more about adolescent vaccines, please visit CDC’s website for parents about vaccines for children at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents, or you can visit www.middleschoolhealth.org for the Middle School Health Starts Here website.
Medical Care Plan Forms, and Medication Forms, (asthma, food and insect allergies, diabetes, seizures, other health conditions), are available on the Nurse page, of the Student Life drop-down, located on the school website.
http://fultonscienceacademy.org/clinic-forms/
Parents and guardians are encouraged to get this done over the summer. Medical care plans will need a doctor signature as well as prescription medications. Always consult with your physician with questions concerns, and to inquire about side effects.
Open House: Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring Over-the-counter medication, as well as emergency medication and prescription medication, with the medical care plan, and /or Administration of Medication Form, to Open House.

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!
Here is some feedback from our parents:
- “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
- “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
- “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
- “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
- “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”
How can I schedule a home visit?
Very simple.
To schedule an elementary school home visit: Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.
Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
