NEW NAME, SAME MISSION!
During its August 10th meeting, the Board of Directors unanimously approved the school’s name be officially changed from Sumter STEAM Charter to Liberty STEAM Charter. After soliciting feedback from the community, the board received 275 responses to its survey. Of those individuals, 98% agreed that a name change was necessary to reflect the rich legacy of the former Liberty Street Elementary. A formal request was made to the SC Public Charter School District on August 13th to approve the name change, which was also unanimously approved making the name change official. According to Chairman Thompson, “Not only does renaming the school reflect the rich legacy of excellence & pride in the former Liberty Street Elementary School but, moreover, it goes to the heart of our mission. I am so proud of this board and the incredible progress we have made in the last year. To our supporting stakeholders: thank you and know that we cannot wait to begin to serve this community and our families.”

Founding Executive Director's Corner
I consider it to be a true privilege and honor to have been selected as the Founding Executive Director for Liberty STEAM Charter. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for welcoming me into the Sumter community. I am excited about leading the efforts to establish Sumter's first tuition-free, public charter. The vision for Liberty STEAM Charter is a complete cultural change from the traditional teaching & learning model. We will focus on partnering with our community and families to provide personalized and project-based learning experiences through a STEAM-based academic program where graduates become the next generation of leaders, employers, and employees who contribute to the economic well-being of their communities and families.
Since coming to Sumter for the first time in June, it became apparent to me that key LSC stakeholders believe that LSC's proposed educational model will successfully serve and reach all parts of the community in preparing our young people to participate in an ever-changing economy. Having had the opportunity to jump feet first into the work has allowed me the opportunity to learn a great amount of information in a short period of time. One thing that is clear to me is that many families across Sumter are anxiously seeking additional high-quality public school options given that our children only have one shot at a K-12 education. I encourage you to follow Liberty STEAM Charter on social media and check out our website to stay updated with new developments as we move forward in the charter authorization process. I look forward to continuing to get out and into the community in the coming weeks and months - please email me if I can ever of be assistance (kgraham@libertysteamcharter.org).

NINE MINDS, ONE MISSION: Who are the school's founders and why are they committed to LSC?
Greg A. Thompson, Chairman "I am committed to this charter school, because I believe that an innovative education option is needed to further support the economic development of the Sumter community and surrounding region. Having a public school that starts with early childhood with a laser-sharp focus on STEAM career pathways will give our children the best chance for career and college success." | Dexter Davis, Vice-Chairman "As a proud product of the Sumter community - a community that has given so much to me - I am excited to be a part of something bigger than sports that gives tremendous opportunities in a unique educational experience. This additional public education option is going to be a true game-changer for the children in our community who have the most to gain." | Kimberly Rauschenbach, Treasurer"I’m committed to LSC because education isn’t “one size fits all”. The plans for the charter school have been meticulously crafted to create a learning environment where our students - who we call “scholars” - will thrive through project-based learning experiences, family engagement, support services, and character development – it’s truly a personalized education opportunity with a whole-child approach." |

Rev. Dr. Marion Newton "I am committed to LSC, because I believe that education is paramount and that our children deserve nothing but the best education we can provide to them. I think when families have greater choices to select the place for their child to be educated, the better the outcomes will be. I am a person who believes in the tremendous value of public education and know that LSC will be able to provide this quality of public education that is needed." | Bronwyn McElveen "I am a parent of two small children, a working professional, and a dedicated community member. LSC represents an opportunity for students and parents to have access to a world-class education, emphasizing instruction in engineering, computer technology, and health sciences. We have the opportunity to build a dynamic learning environment where every child is embraced and uplifted, while being equally positioned for social, emotional, academic, and professional success." | Steve Creech "The biggest economic engine we have in the Sumter community is Shaw AFB. I currently serve on the Executive Committee of the Governor's Military Base Task Force representing Shaw Air Force Base and the biggest concern is to enhance the quality of our local public education options. Our military people deserve for their children to go to the finest schools available and Liberty STEAM Charter will provide a unique educational experience unlike any other." |

Cammy Chandler"I am committed to this charter school, because I know this will be a game-changing opportunity for our community’s most underserved neighborhoods to receive equitable access to an additional high-quality public education option that will level the playing field and allow our scholars to excel at high levels. This is a huge win for our community, in particular for parents who are seeking an additional high-quality public education option for their children." | Ben E. Griffith, Jr. My commitment to the success of LSC is based on my long-standing belief in and commitment to public school education in Sumter County. LSC will provide an additional opportunity and option for strengthening the delivery of educational services to young people in our area. Ultimately, I’m convinced that LSC will nudge the overall quality of public education in our area to a new level, and will raise the bar for Educators, Students, Parents, and the Community as well." | Dr. Rodney Thompson "I am committed to this charter school, because it is evident that many families are anxiously seeking high-quality public school options given that children only get one shot at a K-12 education. To make a community truly vibrant depends largely on strong public education options. At LSC, we are on a clear-cut mission to make a huge difference for kids." |
