Attendance Makes a Difference!
When your child is absent from school, they are missing valuable instructional time. With the holidays approaching, please be mindful of the school calendar and limit travel to days when school is not in session. If your child is sick or absent for another approved reason in the student handbook, please write a letter to your child’s teacher upon their return to school in order to have the absence excused. We are thankful to see our students here everyday!
Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of November is “Honesty”. Honesty is an important character trait for our students to learn as they grow into trustworthy citizens. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during November to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
SEL Parent Night
Thank you to everyone that participated in the Social Emotional Learning Parent Night on Tuesday, November 1st. We are so thankful that we were able to share some of the things that our students are learning in school each day. Please visit www.casel.org to learn more about about SEL, and how to incorporate it at home. Also, please click on the handout below for questions that you can ask your children at home to engage your child(ren) at home!
November is Picture Book Month
It’s time to start reading the 2023 Georgia Picture Book Nominees! The Georgia Picture Book Award program is sponsored by the Department of Language and Literacy at the University of Georgia. The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia and to introduce students to books of literary excellence. After hearing at least ten of the twenty nominees, students will vote for their favorite. Our votes will be sent to UGA to be included in the final count for the winning nominee.
Spotlight on Native American Heritage Picture Books
The First Strawberries retold by Joseph Bruchac
From an award-winning Native American storyteller comes this captivating re-telling of a Cherokee legend, which explains how strawberries came to be. Long ago, the first man and woman quarreled. The woman left in anger, but the Sun sent tempting berries to Earth to slow the wife's retreat. When the woman finds that its sweetness reminds her of how happy she and her husband had been together, she decides to share the fruit with her husband. This legend presents a powerful case for respecting one another and the earth.
October 1, 2022- November 30, 2022
Our school-wide Beanstack training continues through November! Beanstack is an online digital reading program provided to all GCPS schools. Students are encouraged to log their reading minutes while working to meet challenges.
For now, the Fall Into Reading 2022 challenge will be in place as we continue to train students on using this digital platform. Students will login to Beanstack using their GCPS student number and their birthday month and date (MMDD) as their password. Students are able to log reading minutes either on their laptop or on a mobile device.
Refer to the media center link of the school website for helpful resources to get your child started with Beanstack. Contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org if you have any questions about this digital reading program.
The Collins Hill Library branch will be sponsoring a science night on Monday, November 21 from 5:15 PM to 6:15 PM. If you enjoy hand-on activities, stop by the branch for some science fun!
