Chicken BBQ Class Baskets
This year’s Chicken BBQ fundraiser is right around the corner! As always, each class puts together a “Classroom Basket” for the raffle, comprised of donations from the families of students in the class.
Please consider donating to your child's homeroom basket. Place donations in an envelope marked “CBBQ Donation.” Donations can be sent to school with your student or delivered to the office.
This year's class themes are:
Our Learning
Literacy:
This week, we began unit 6 in literacy. The focus is how characters learn lessons in the face of a challenge. We continue to talk about the theme of the story, the patterns found throughout a story, and we will dig into narrative nonfiction books in language workshop.
In writing, the students finished their fantasy papers. They were very creative and imaginative! We will now move to writing a literary essay, stating their thoughts about the book they are studying and offering evidence to support their thinking.
Math Workshop
Math Workshop
The fifth graders are working on Unit 6: Multiplication and Division of Fractions
Essential Questions:
- How can a whole be partitioned into parts?
- How can different strategies be helpful when solving a problem?
Enduring Understanding:
- Mathematicians understand that mathematical operations are used in solving problems by choosing, combining, and applying effective strategies.
There are many targets in this unit, but we have worked on the following:
I can interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator.
I can solve word problems involving the division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers.
I can multiply a whole number by a fraction using visual fraction models.

Mrs. Edwards' March Guidance Lesson
This month during classroom guidance lessons, students worked on calming strategies and mindfulness. Students learned different breathing techniques and calming strategies that can be implemented when experiencing something difficult. Mindfulness techniques of tapping into our senses as a biological way of calming down were utilized as well. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
