Advocacy Priorities

Lisa Girard and Sarah Hunicke participated in RI Library Legislative Day at the statehouse on April 10, and Sarah will be joining the RI delegation for National Library Legislative Day in Washington, D.C. next month. Our advocacy work this year centers around the following:

  • Working with RILA to draft language for a bill requiring professional staff in all school libraries.

  • Working with COLA to improve the school librarian evaluation process. (If you're told you can't possibly get a "4" on knowledge of students because you're not a classroom teacher (true story!), then you shouldn't be evaluated with the same rubric as a classroom teacher.)

If you are interested in contributing to these initiatives, please email Sarah at

Idea: Badge Program for Students

Now that the AASL has released updated standards (which will be reviewed at the Unconference), we will work with RIDE to get them posted on their site. In the meantime, Marianne Mirando has come up with an idea for connecting library curricula across districts: a badge program for students related to the standards.

Marianne envisions giving students the opportunity to earn badges for successfully completing tasks that demonstrate their ability to think, create, share, and grow throughout the six new shared foundations: inquire, include, collaborate, curate, explore, and engage.

The program would start with at the high-school level, with input from local colleges and universities re: what skills are highest priority. In future years, we would roll out programs for middle and elementary schools.

If you are interested in working on this project, please email Marianne at
