Lisa Girard and Sarah Hunicke participated in RI Library Legislative Day at the statehouse on April 10, and Sarah will be joining the RI delegation for National Library Legislative Day in Washington, D.C. next month. Our advocacy work this year centers around the following:
- Working with RILA to draft language for a bill requiring professional staff in all school libraries.
- Working with COLA to improve the school librarian evaluation process. (If you're told you can't possibly get a "4" on knowledge of students because you're not a classroom teacher (true story!), then you shouldn't be evaluated with the same rubric as a classroom teacher.)
Idea: Badge Program for Students
Marianne envisions giving students the opportunity to earn badges for successfully completing tasks that demonstrate their ability to think, create, share, and grow throughout the six new shared foundations: inquire, include, collaborate, curate, explore, and engage.
The program would start with at the high-school level, with input from local colleges and universities re: what skills are highest priority. In future years, we would roll out programs for middle and elementary schools.
