AMCMS Principal's Office
What's Going on in the Principal's Office?!
My Challenge to You
I am sure that you have seen this commercial since the Superbowl. I laugh when I see it because the protective instinct makes me chuckle when I see him following the kids around town. When I think about it I also think, "What would happen if the dad didn't embrace the technology available?" Think about that for a second. Of course this is just a silly commercial but the accepting or ignoring of today's technology is real. It is just as real in the classroom as well.
As educators we have a choice. We have a choice to embrace the technology that is available to increase student engagement and improves student access to the coursework and curriculum or to ignore the technology. Embracing technology is more than just using the smartboard or showing a video. It is building lessons that involve the use of technology for research, for information curation, for creation of projects, and for supplementing their learning.
This does not mean that every single lesson requires the use of technology but it means that you should be asking yourself a question when you design your lessons, "What technology will support this learning activity?" Lessons are designed and then the tools are put in place to support the lesson, which includes technology tools. There are many technology tools out there that are available to support learning. If you are not sure of what can be used to support the learning in your classroom, talk with your neighbor, talk with Stephen Alexander, or contact me. If we do not know of one off hand, we will find out! I have also linked some articles below to help you get started.
In 2016 we should not be ignoring the technology tools available to us as educators. When we ignore the technology that is available to us we are increasing the chances our students think school is irrelevant to them. When students think school is irrelevant then we see a decrease in engagement in learning. We know what happens when we see a decrease in student engagement. How will you evaluate your lessons to increase student engagement, not decrease their engagement?
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff

AMCMS Technology Tip of the Week
Check out the Google Translate app for iPad and iPhone. You can use the camera to "see" English text and the app can translate it into just about any language you might need for an ELL student. It does makes mistakes but for those students that are brand new to English it can really help them.
Want to see what I mean check out this video demonstration.
Need help downloading it or getting it to work let me know and I will be glad to help you.
Stephen
