November Precept:
When it is dark, be the one that turns on the light! - Joseph
Nothing will work unless you do!
Parent Activity: Politeness and Respect are part of our 9 weeks priorities. Talk to your child about how this quote connects to our PRIDE expectations!
LIVE WISE LIVE HEALTH
According to the Center for Research and Clinical Care, approximately one in 11 children experience some form of depression before the age of 14. RISD is joining the movement to end the stigma associated with mental health challenges. Programming for this effort includes opportunities for parents, students and staff members to learn more about mental health and meaningful next steps to support themselves and the children they teach.
STUDENTS:
The second “I Know What to Do” day is Nov. 13. Supported by Students Services, campuses will practice scenarios using RISD’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and remind students of the staff and programs available for mental health support.
Student Assistance Programs will conduct the annual High School Student Survey. This survey identifies the top student concerns and supports.
The “Angst” documentary will be available for students at Berkner and Richardson High School and their feeder junior highs. Time to Act guidance lessons will be delivered to all students K-12. A Teen Screen community event is scheduled for Dec. 6.
STAFF:
Wellness presentations will be made available to campuses through the RISD Human Resources Department. Student Services staff and campus counselors will be trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA). National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is available to make campus presentations.
COMMUNITY:
View the “Angst” documentary the week of Nov. 26 at Berkner High School and the week of Dec. 10 at Richardson High School.
Look for the flyer with dates and times.
A message from our counselor:
In support of RISD’s Mental Health Awareness Month in November, I would like to offer some facts regarding mental health with children.
Mental health refers to a person’s overall social, emotional, behavioral, and psychological well-being. It impacts how we think, feel, and act, including how a child:
1. Feels about himself/herself.
2. Relates to other children and adults.
3. Handles change, stress, and other life situations.
One in five children experience a mental, emotional, or behavioral health problem before age 18. These problems affect children of all demographic groups, regardless of education, income, race, or culture.
Attention Parents
Parents, please do not leave vehicles unattended in the fire lane at any time. If you park in the fire lane you may be subject to receiving a ticket from the Fire Marshall.
A Message from our Grade Levels:
Pre- K/PPCD
Pre-K/PPCD will be working on counting and identifying numbers. Parents are encouraged to count with their children at home. We are also learning about My Family & Friends for the next month.
Don't forget for your kindergartner to listen to or read a fiction story everyday for 10-20 minutes. Please ask what happened in the beginning, middle, and the end of the story. For nonfiction books, ask your child to tell you 3 facts about the book.Enjoy book time!
1st Grade:
Dear First Grade Parent: We are beginning reading groups and intervention groups. Tutoring permission slips went home in the Tuesday envelope.Your students are working hard to learn many new procedures and routines for first grade. Also, they are learning a lot of new strategies to enhance their learning, such as taking a minute or two to breathe is one way we can calm ourselves, so that we are able to think more clearly and make better choices. Please make sure your child is reading for 15-20 minutes a night. Reading helps your student in all school subjects. Reading is the most important skill. We are getting ready to implement ipads in classrooms. Each child must supply their own headphones or earbuds this year.
2nd grade:
November 2nd is the LAST day to pay for the field trip. If your child has not been paid for by then, they will stay behind with the rest of 2nd grade goes to the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. Student are still in need of earbuds or headphones for their iPads. Please pick up some for your child very soon.
3rd grade:
Reading books with your children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. Investing as little as 20 minutes a day can be the difference in a lifetime of success or failure for a child. Daily reading helps to foster listening skills, curiosity and gives your child a strong foundation for future reading skills. Children who read 20 minutes per day see 1.8 million words a year!
4th grade:
Continue to read over the break for 20-30 minutes each day.
5th grade:
We are starting Unit 3 in ELAR with informational text. The students will be studying text features and how they enhance the understanding. In math the students are multiplying decimals and in science they are studying reflection and refraction of light.
Don’t forget to send in your permission slip and $5 for the music field trip on November 29th.
6th grade:
This Tuesday Nov. 13th is the last tutoring date for this semester.
ELL:
It's been an exciting week! Mrs. Crisp, Mrs. Hubregsen, and Mrs. Bustamante have enjoyed getting to work with students this week. We all focused on listening attentively to others and speaking to our peers.
A note from our Specials Teachers:
