Dear Bryn Mawr Families,
What amazing learning all of our kindergarten, first and second graders have done since the first day of school. Our students are working hard to be respectful, responsible, and safe. Thank you for your collaboration and support.
I'm a proud principal of our Bryn Mawr Positive Penguins!

Kindergarten News
The kindergarten children have settled into the school routine, and have become a part of the Bryn Mawr School learning community. The school rules and routines have been reviewed daily and we had a great visit from Omegaman to reinforce the importance of making good choices and listening to adult directions.
In reading we have just finished our first unit “Take a New Step” and are beginning unit 2 “Let’s Explore!” We are working on learning the letters and sounds of Mm, Aa, Ss, Rr and students are very excited to be reading our first high frequency words! The children are learning to always start at the top when forming letters and numbers. In math we have been counting objects, using manipulatives to build amounts and working on number recognition. In the coming months we will be building and writing numbers above 5 and beginning basic addition.
We are beginning to work on our autumn unit. In this unit the children will become more aware of the changes in their environment. We will talk about the weather and discuss the life cycles of apples and pumpkins. We will begin talking about how we use our five senses to explore the new season. We hope to be outside whenever weather allows so please continue to send jackets and sneakers as needed.
Remember to help your child practice their first and last name as often as possible. Please continue to review and celebrate all the great work they are bringing home!
First Grade News
First grade is finally in full swing. Students are meeting new friends, building new relationships with classmates, and having lots of fun. We have begun our first grade curriculum and are learning the school rules and routines.
In the coming weeks, students will begin to receive nightly math and reading homework. If possible, it is very helpful to create a quiet environment for your student to learn, free from distractions. Creating a homework routine can build good habits, make homework run smoother and foster independence. By working together we can make a wonderful school year for your child.
Second Grade News
Second grade is a busy place this year! Bryn Mawr second graders are making new friends and learning new classroom routines. Learning to organize homework, practice math, and reading nightly are responsibilities that are expected of this year’s classes. Planners should go home, be checked nightly and then returned to school each morning.
We are reading stories about family and friends. The children are studying the elements of story structure. The elements are: setting, problem, events, and ending. Discussing these elements with your child after reading a story will help to develop good comprehension skills. We will also be reading books on various reading levels to meet each child’s individual needs. This guided reading is part of the regular reading program.
We will be doing Go Math again this year. Students will continue to take their chapter tests online. Please practice facts at home to help your child feel confident in math.
In Social Studies, we have been learning about maps. Students have been learning about the compass rose, scale, and map keys. They will also be learning about Matter.
Class donations of tissues and wipes are greatly appreciated!
We look forward to working with you and your child this year!

Art with Mrs. Bailey!
Hello Parents!
I am thrilled to be working with your children this year. I strive to have an uplifting classroom that sparks creativity, positivity, and kindness. We will explore the elements of art through art history, books, different materials, and techniques. Mindfulness art will be incorporated into their art curriculum as well. This is where we will explore how art can be calming, help regulate emotions, and serve as an outlet for our thoughts. My hope for the students is that they will learn to embrace their creative individuality and grow to trust the process of art making.
The students are traveling the globe as they begin to study the art element of “line.” Kindergarteners are making line Chinese lanterns, drawing different types of lines, and cutting on a line. First grade is learning about Keith Haring, street art, and how his simple line figure drawings express movement and emotions. Lastly, the second grade is venturing all the way to Australia and learning about Aboriginal dot art culture. I can’t wait to see how all the projects come out and I am sure they will be excited to show them to you as well!
This year is going to be spectacular! Please feel free to reach out to me at any time if you have any questions.

Gym with Miss Derosier!
Hi Families!
My name is Miss. D and I’m the new physical education (PE) teacher! I am so excited for the upcoming school year and getting to know all of the wonderful students! This school year we will be learning and practicing locomotor (skipping, galloping, walking, sliding, etc) and gross motor skills, such as running, throwing, kicking, etc. I hope to create an environment where every student feels welcome, encouraged and excited to move outside their comfort zone and find success. To help with this, we will continually practice the 3 P’s of PE: practice, patience and perseverance!
For the first few weeks of school, We have been hard at work learning about the rules and expectations of PE for the year, remembering special spots and getting those heart rates up! The students have been practicing their locomotor skills (have them show you at home!), moving in general space, stations, and learning different games. We are currently working on our throwing and catching unit, which will last through mid-October. Mindfulness will continue to be incorporated and taught throughout the school year. Lastly, sneakers are preferred for safety.
I look forward to a fun-filled school year!

Music with Ms. Garrow!
Welcome back to school and back to Music!
Bryn Mawr Music classes have started off on a high note! Students are learning important lessons about steady beat, tempo, and rhythm by playing many different circle song games from around the world.
It is a pleasure to see all of the students working together to try out new musical concepts and work with their new classmates on exciting musical adventures and activities!
As in years past, we will be presenting our Winter Holiday Programs in December. Please be on the lookout for information about these performances!
Technology with Mrs. LeBreton
Hello Parents and Welcome Back to School! My name is Kerry LeBreton and I am the Technology/Media Specialist at both Pakachoag and Bryn Mawr Schools.
We are lucky enough to have one to one iPads for the students to use each day. For the months of September and October, I will be focusing on the proper use of iPads as well as Digital Citizenship (using technology in a SAFE but fun way both within our schools and at home.) Please ask your child about what they have learned in Technology Class each week.
I have added a QR code with a fun message for your kids below. You can scan the code to read the secret message using your camera on your phone or ipad/tablet. If you do not have access to one of these, please feel free to email me at klebreton@auburn.k12.ma.us and I will send you the secret message.
I look forward to a wonderful school year!
