JOB SEARCH STRATEGIES
Here are some key facts to remember about searching for a job:
- A typical professional job search will take six to nine months. Finding a job should feel like a fulltime job if you've completed your classes. If you're still taking classes, dedicate at least 2 hours per day. A professional job search takes more time because you have career goals and specific interests, skills, and experience to offer an employer.
- You are qualified for more jobs than you might realize and your major will not always align with every job in which you apply. Review job descriptions and if you feel you are qualified and could do the job, apply.
- Worried you may not have enough experience? Make sure you're considering all of your experiences including academic projects/class assignments, volunteering, part-time jobs, athletics, and any other experiences you have that might convince an employer of your abilities/skills.
- Most job openings are not advertised, so a thorough search plan requires both looking online and networking.
- Be as flexible as you can be with your search parameters including types of jobs, employers, and location. Typically, the more flexibility in your search, the faster you'll reach your goal.
The following are some techniques that should be part of your job search routine:
- Target your resume AND write a cover letter to match each job
- Use Handshake to find jobs/internships and connect with employers
- Go beyond online third-party job websites like Monster and Indeed – Create a list of employers that interest you and visit their career pages
- Create a LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com) account and start your professional social network
- Conduct Informational Interviews to meet people who have jobs that interest you
- Use niche industry or professional association job boards
